“Great week at Occidental Grand”

Just got back to Chicago yesterday after a beautiful week in Cozumel. This was our 2nd time staying at this resort. First, all the things we love about this resort. The grounds are beautiful. The rooms are large and very well kept with the best shower ever. Most of the staff is very friendly and will do whatever to make your stay enjoyable. A special thank you to our waiter Jorge who was so wonderful. I don't think there is a better sandy beach in all of Cozumel. Just beautiful and always enough chairs. The dive shop is wonderful. We took a snorkel trip with them for $39 - worth every cent. We saw squid, lobster, sea turtles, eels, sea cucumbers, lots of fish, and a field of starfish (they refer to it as hollywood). At the end of the trip a pod of dolphins approached the boat and we all jumped in and swam with them. Unbelievable, we were told we were very fortunate as this is a rarity. Unfortunaltey, the first day several people were stung by jellyfish all four of us included. Three of us were fine, one friend had a bad reaction with around 200 bites on her body, Bring along a prednisone just in case you need it. To call in a Doctor it is $100 usd. The jellyfish were so small you couldn't see them. This just happened one day all of the other days were fine. Suggestions, for the hotel: Put up a jellyfish warning. Have more than one bartender at the pool bar. Reception is very slow and not real friendly. Allow guests to make dinner reservations at the same time of check-in. All in all would recommend this resort. Had a wonderful week in the sun

“Worth the stay!”

My husband & I recently visited for our anniversary. We had been to Cozumel before, but stayed at a smaller resort. Resort was still small, however it has been our experience that most resorts on Cozumel are, because of the size of the island.

Great things: 1.Daytime activity staff - very friendly, fun, and energetic. They are very welcoming and easily get people involved without being pushy or obnoxious. They have a great variety of activities, and will base them around the particular group's preferences during your stay. They also have a great Kid's Club program (we don't have kids, but ran into several couples with kids & would see the kid's activities around). The Kid's Club staff are also very energetic and friendly - you could tell the kids loved hanging out with them.
2. Restaurants - although lacking a ton of different restaurants, the choices were surprisingly abundant. Menus offered variety & specialty restaurants had great food & service. Even the buffet's food was good - omelet stations, fresh fruit daily, etc. 3. Grounds - the resort is very spread out, but beautiful. It is a walk to the pools and ocean, however the beach is gorgeous, the pools are great, and the Occidental has done an amazing job keeping the grounds preserved & beautiful. You will see all types of indigenous plants and local animals! 4. Snorkeling right on the beach is good too. Dive shop is great - snorkeling trip is well worth the money - you will visit many reefs for a very low price. We also went diving on 3 different trips - great reefs, dive shop staff, and master divers - they are all very knowledgeable & helpful; they will plan the dives around the group's interests. There are a ton of reefs right outside the hotel, so the longest boat ride to any given reef is maybe 15 minutes.

Bad things: 1. Check in was a headache - the check in desk was hard to identify upon arrival and there were never enough staff working at one time, so there was always a line (check in desk is also where you book restaurants, etc.). 2. Beds were horrible - very hard & uncomfortable.

Overall service was great, and the atmosphere was amazing. The staff all over the resort are very friendly and helpful (just a long wait most of the time at the main lobby). We will definitely be back to visit!

Room Tip: Higher numbered buildings are closer to the pools/ocean; lower numbered buildings are closer to the...

“Relaxing vacation”

A group of 5 adults stayed at the resort and had a wonderful time. Drinks were excellent, food at the a la carte restaurants was very good and the buffet was excellent with a wide variety of choices. The property is beautiful and well maintained and the grounds staff were always cleaning the property to keep it in such good condition and the flora and the resort is very colorful. The bathrooms in the public areas were very clean at all times. The beach area was beautiful and well kept with many chairs and it was not over crowded. Our rooms were well kept and maintained and had a great shower. I recommend this property to all thinking about going to Cozumel because I will.

“Occidental Grand, Cozumel”

Just got back from a week at the Occidental Grand. Twenty of us went including 4-5 year olds and 1-7 year old. Everyone had "Grand" time. The hotel is excellent, food is fantastic, staff is wonderful and of course you can't beat sand and sun in the winter time. Some of us dive and the dive shop is very good. The kids program was the best. Small and intimate. Clean and friendly.
We'll definitely go back.

Room Tip: The rooms are all good. Try to get away from the ice machines.
