“Great Location and Wonderful People”

We arrived at Meson San Miguel on Christmas Day 2006. Due to some airline mishaps, we ended up having to fly into Cancun, taxi to Playa and then ferry to Cozumel. Upon disembarking from the ferry, the Meson San Miguel was like a shining beacon of relief that was so simple to just walk to. It is an older hotel, but the staff is so helpful; it also helps if you know some Spanish. The staff was always smiling. Our room faced the lovely old-fashioned square complete with a wonderful clock tower. We had a balcony that I enjoyed sitting on early each morning watching the local folks heading to the ferry, greet each other, set up their stands, etc. In the evening, there were local activities, music, and the wonderful aroma of food cooking. Our room/bathroom was always clean and spotless. If you are looking for a 5-star hotel where you just want to stay in your room, never hear any noise and enjoy fancy furniture, then this hotel is not for you. The location is wonderful to walk around the town, visit local restaurants and soak up the Mexican culture. At all times we were completely safe, both at the hotel and in the village and on the beaches. I would recommend renting a car to travel to the beaches and all around the island as the town is not on a very sandy beach that is good for walking and swimming. I would definately go back to this hotel for the convenience and for the warmth of the people.

  • Liked — Location and convenience to restaurants and bars.
  • Disliked — Needed a taxi or rental car to get to the beaches.
  • Tips/Secrets — Rent a car. Go to the uninhabited side of the island to Playa Bonito for the best red snapper.

“Great Location”

After staying with my mother, Hotel Meson was like a five star Hotel. My mother had no running water or air in her home after the hurricane in July, so it was very awful staying with her. I found the hotel by accident, and loved having a flushing toilet and a running shower. I'm returning to the hotel with my children and grandson, it will show them how well off they are in Los Angeles.

See you on Friday!

“Never again”

We arrived in Cozumel on the Ferry from Playa del Carmen late at night and needed a room as we had been travelling all day, missed our cruise ship in Miami. Not knowing where to find a room, this hotel was close to the ferry landing. The lobby looked fine, but the room was not nice. My kids pulled back their covers to find sheets that were stained, the room had an unpleasant odor, and the old door had very questionable locks on it. The town square was not all that loud, but every time I heard a noise I awoke, fearing for our safety. In the morning we used the shower and apparently both cold and Hot come from the same Warm pipe. By the time my wife showered, the water had leaked from the shower across the floor , out the door into the hotel room where our luggage was sitting, soaking some of the bags. In the daylight the area appeared much better and perhaps we were safe all along, and we walked around the area and found a couple of other hotels with similar rates just a couple of blocks up the coast.

It's one of the cheapest hotels that can be booked online for cozumel. Definately not luxury. If you are unlucky, you get a room with a window only facing the hallway (no natural sunlight!). The least rooms have a balkony. The bar "Fat Tuesday" just besides the hotel can be quite noisy until about midnight and a little later. The hotel has a very central location.
Consider this: I booked this hotel at expedia. The rates on the German site were about 10$ a night less than on expedia.

So it's not the Ritz, but for the amount of time spent in our room, it was well worth the price. We were on the top floor with a great view of the ocean. The music from the Hard Rock Cafe filtered into our room only one night, but with the air conditioner turned on, it wasn't a problem.

Each day, we left the maid a $2 or $20(pesos) tip and not only did nothing end up missing, but she left us a rose and arranged our shoes and luggage very nicely in the closet (above and beyond the normal cleaning and bedmaking). She also left us the softer towels. Yes, we did leave valuables such as cell phones and cameras in the room, but we made sure they weren't just sitting out as a temptation.

Some of the other travelers in our group complained of leaky showers and no hot water, but we didn't experience any of these problems.

If you're a people watcher, there's no better place than "wall-sitting" outside the hotel's front door when the ferry lets off every hour on the 45 minute mark. Also, the beer in the hotel bar is cheap (only $1 per beer).
