My boyfriend & I spent 6 nights at the Be Live Grand Viva Beach 1/13/12 – 1/19/12 and as we were first time guests here, we were not sure what to expect. I am writing this review so that future travelers will know what to expect. Keep in mind that this is being written by an easy-to-please, middle class woman whose only goal was to have a relaxing and enjoyable vacation.
The Resort:
I was confused when I saw advertisements for the Be Live Viva Beach and the Be Live Grand Viva Beach. What the websites do not make clear is that this is the same property but has different amenities based on which “package” you choose. We opted to pay the extra $70/pp and went for the “Grand” stay because this offered us premium bedding (the bed was SO comfortable), access to the Brazilian restaurant for breakfast and dinners, access to a VIP lounge, free mini-bar and free room service. In my opinion, it was worth the extra $70/pp.
The Pros of the resort:
*The wait staff in all of the restaurants & bars was friendly and eager to be of assistance
*The food was wonderful!!
*The drinks were delicious and made with brand name alcohol!!
*The bathrooms were clean, updated & fresh (nothing ruins a vacation faster than a bathroom that is gross)
*The beach towels were plush and huge
*2 words: Sushi bar!!! Seriously, open sushi bar people!!
*4 restaurants, a full service snack bar (best burgers & fries), sushi bar, pizza place in the afternoons, lots of places to get drinks
*All rooms have a water view
*The report felt safe
*The room was quiet, sleep was good
The Cons:
*The front desk staff was slow to respond to requests, seemed very unwilling to be of assistance (the direct opposite of wait staff, servers, etc).
*The in-room refrigerator did not work when we arrived so it was promptly reported to the front desk. They seemed quite annoyed that we would bother them with this issue which is evidenced by the fact that we had to ask them for TWO DAYS to replace the fridge.
*The telephone in our room did not work. This problem took THREE DAYS to be resolved. We kindly pointed out to the manager that we paid extra to access room service yet we are unable to use it since we had no phone. Same for the mini-bar! They still seemed unconcerned and were quite rude about it.
*Narrow beach—the beach is the length of the hotel property but not very deep so you end up with people all around you
*Rocky beach—the sand is shallow and there are multiple tree roots and rocks that come through the sand. I rarely walked on the beach without sandals for this reason. I can’t tell you how many people I witnessed tripping over rocks and tree roots
*Limited number of beach chairs in relation to number of guests. There are numerous chairs but you need to get out to the beach early (by 9:00) to reserve your chair with your beach towel.
*The hotel advertises “non-motorized water sports” which translates into 2 kayaks (yes, only 2) and a catamaran which is not even housed at the hotel, you need to walk or take a bus to a marina to use the catamaran.
*Beach volleyball there is awful! The ball is old and literally falling apart at the seams. The court is right in the middle of the area where guests sunbathe and right next to the water where there are sharp rocks along the shoreline.
*The hotel advertises a “health bar” which gives you healthy options. Here’s how it runs: every morning they set up the “health bar” with pineapples and other various fruits on display, but they do not make anything. At all. I guess it’s just to look at. Great way to save calories, I suppose.
*Once the sun goes down at night, there isn’t much else to do at the resort. They have a lounge but it is loud, uninviting, cold and just not a good place to wind down at the end of the day. They had a show a couple of nights out of 6 nights but other than that, not much else. The vibe was not one of rest and relaxation
*The 2 lounges have 2 televisions each. . each television is about a 32 inch screen which means you have to squint to see the picture. The televisions in the main lounge have so much “snow”, you hardly make out the picture. It was this way our entire stay.
*The couches and chairs are so old and broken down I needed a lift from my boyfriend to help me get up from the chairs. The fabrics are worn, torn and tattered and do not appear to be terribly clean.
*If all gratuities are included, then why do all the bartenders and servers at the snack shop & sushi bars have a tip jar out? Don’t get me wrong, I am happy to tip even when all gratuities are included (I brought $50 in one dollar bills for just this purpose) but I find it to be distasteful when tip jars are used.
*Despite having 4 restaurants on site, apparently the management at the Be Live resort does not believe in using any signage to place the names/hours on each restaurant. Sure, you can ask a staff member, but many are not able to communicate even a little bit in English.
*The “Grand” rooms advertise plasma televisions. . . do not be fooled, plasma televisions they are not.
*The rooms are very dated, there were pictures missing from the wall, structural or cosmetic flaws were attempted to be covered up with paint.
Overall impression:
Front desk staff is FAR from helpful. The service staff is wonderful. The beach is so-so at best. The food and drinks are great. The atmosphere does not support rest and relaxation—the beach is packed, the lounges are loud and uncomfortable. While the resort “grew on me” during our week there, it is not the first place that I will look to stay when I make my annual trip to Mexico next year. The actual website of Be Live lists this as a 5 star resort—NOT EVEN CLOSE!!! 3 stars on a good day. Look to the Riviera Maya—much better beaches, much more relaxed atmosphere. I will never choose Cancun over Riviera Maya again!
Room Tip: Upgrade to the "Grand" rooms which have premium bedding--the beds are super comfortable!!!
