“Ewww, covered in bed bug bites”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2011

Gross. Seriously the next day, I was covered in little red itchy bumps. My boyfriend didn't have a problem with this, but he is Mexican, and I can't be 100% sure it was bed bugs, but I'm pretty sure, since they appeared after sleeping at the Alux. The windows were like that blind kinda glass that cranks open - well, there were two spots with big holes in them, so the mosquitos could come in - friggin great.
The area kinda blows - it was downtown Cancun, kinda a seedy area, not in the hotel zone, but very convenient to the bus station.
The air worked pretty good. There was nowhere to charge my phone and computer in the room - one plug where the TV went and only a 2-prong outlet. And the plug in the bathroom obviously suffered from a fired, bc of the black smoky stain around it.
The bathroom seemed clean and the hot water worked well.
I needed to be at the airport at 830a. Hotel Alux staff told us that continental breakfast would be set up between 6 and 7a. At 730a, we were still waiting for the breakfast to be set up and we ate at 745a. Breakfast was 15 pesos per person paid with hotel. There was cereal, yogurt, apples, bananas, OJ, coffee and various breads and toasts.
The beg bugs, plug issue, and hole in the windows to let in mosquitos were the deal breakers. I would not recommend this place.

It is widely known that bed bugs are a serious problem in todays hotel industry, they are transported from property to property by guests.
After we read your review, we checked the whole property for these unpleasant visitors. Some of the things that we have done is to check the walls, beds, electric outlets, small holes in the walls, etc. Since none were located we followed a suggestion to change the temperature of the room 2-3 degrees up, which makes the bed bugs come out of their hiding places. No bed bugs were found after following this recommendation.
The hotel does have a contract with an exterminator company, which comes twice a month and treats the rooms with special products. All of this is certified by the appropriate government office. As stated previously, we found no bed bugs.
We do want to say that mosquitoes are common in this area. We do appreciate the objectivity of your review and that you highlighted that you were not totally sure they were bed bugs. Electrical outlets are being replaced as I write. Hotel Alux Cancun has been in the market for many years, it is not a new building and we do try to improve with every opportunity that we have. One of these improvements is the quality of the continental breakfast you had for such a minimun price.
Regarding the window, one of the shutters was broken and it has been replaced. We try to attend any maintenance report as soon as the guest lets us know about it.

“Poor choice, look elsewhere”

The only good thing I have to say about this place is its location (close to the bus station, downtown, and local transportation stops). From the outside , its kind of charming. But inside, its really old, and the rooms really suck. We only paid about 35 US a night, so I guess I got what I paid for . If I had to do it again, I would spend a little more and stay somewhere else downtown. NOTE- Please dont confuse this or associate with the Hotel Alux in Playa Del Carmen, which was an absolute joy to stay at.

“Loud but great location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 February 2010

Right in the centre of Cancun. No massive infestations of gringo tourists. Just a few who stray off that crazy path of the resorts.
It is very loud as it is right downtown. BUT it is a block away from the main bus terminal! Great location in terms of travelling to other destinations. THis stay was only for one night before travelling onwards.
The price is okay (about $34-40 USD/night) but no breakfast means having to roam around.
We found a great restaurant just a block away which offered great veggie options (always have to ask the servers to make options veggie friendly and the food is always awesome). And LOTS of natural juices by the blenderfull. YUM!

This is a very average hotel, but it has a good location and a good price. There is a free internet computer at the lobby, and each floor has a complimentary drinking water dispenser. Most of the rooms are above a busy street (with traffic 24/7), so bring ear plugs if you are sensitive to noise. The staff does not speak english (they can quote the price but that's about it).

There is no breakfast, but all kinds of small shops where you can pick up something to eat are close by.

“Ideal Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2010

Clean, safe, and just a block from the bus depot in the centre of downtown Cancun--the location couldn't have been more convient. Stores, services, and buses are all within a couple of blocks. The bed was comfortable; the sheets were clean; the air conditioner worked; everything was spotless. Hot water: Who could ask for more?

No one speaks English, but everyone was friendly. My 60 words of Spanish got me through.

I paid MX$ 330 a night. A sign says that prices have been lowered; I assume because of the downturn in business. It also indicates US$30 a night as the rate, so you save a good 10% by paying in pesos. There's an exchange counter between the hotel and the bus depot. It's open in the evenings with good rates.

Other reviewers mentioned breakfast; no sign of it during my stay. I went to the big grocery store across the way for fresh croissants, yogurt, and orange juice. Pick up one of the sandwiches from the front counter. They're fresh and sealed, perfect for taking along for the day.
