“Some issues, but beautiful location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 May 2006

My boyfriend and I recently stayed at Papaya Playa in Tulum. We paid $30 for a private, concrete floor bungalow with shared bath/shower (note: in order to make a reservation online, Papaya Playa requires full payment in advance). The room was spartan, with just a double bed, mosquito net, small table, and chair. There are no electrical outlets in the room, and light is only provided by a dim bare light bulb for a few hours each night (bring a flashlight if you plan on staying here). Bathrooms were fairly clean, though there were some issues with backed up toilets when we first arrived. The open air showers were clean and huge with hot water. The location is fantastic and makes up for a lot of the problems - we were able to just sit up in bed and see the beach and ocean! The beach was clean and nearly completely deserted, however there was some construction being done at the hotel restaurant that was somewhat loud and disruptive. All in all, we felt the price was fair for what we got, although I think we would probably stay somewhere else on a return visit. NOTE: We heard reports from other travellers that they tend to add charges to your bill if you charge things to your room. Be careful and inspect your bills closely at checkout!!

“Mellow fun at Papaya Playa (Tulum)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 May 2006

Rented a large (3 bed) cabana that was 15 steps from the beach. It was as clean as I'd expect given its location and doors that opened practically on to the beach. Ate several reasonably priced meals there that we enjoyed (the best food here and in other Tulum spots is fish/ceviche and they don't seem to serve it unless it's fresh). Location was good as it is a ten minute walk into the beach town, a 5 minute and 30 peso ride into the main town and a 5 minute and 30 peso ride to the ruins. And they have a good swimming beach that is free of rocks and jagged coral in the wading area. The staff was friendly and laid back, but also gladly accomodated the few requests we made of them.

Overall, we had a great stay and would return.

“Disgrace for Tulum and Maya region”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 April 2006

Very dishonest Manager (sergio) and also rude. Dirty rooms and showers. No hot water. Expensive food. Avoid this place if you want to have good time in Maya region. We escaped after one night stay and Manager wanted tyo charge us for extra nights.

There are better places and people then Papya and Sergio.

If you like nature and good attention, this is the place you should go. It is a rustic ecologic tipe hotel, but as I said before it is the paradise. Even when it´s raining. We went in 03/2006 and I recomend you to go here. I will add photos later.

“don't set foot in the place!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 March 2006

Well I've just read all the reviews on the place that I'm about to write about & it is good to know that other people are taking time out to say "it's the worst hotel (if you can call it that)" that I have ever stayed in. $90 per night for a room with 3 girls sharing. One of us on the floor & we took a blow up mattress with us, crabs crawling all over the floor and no lock on the door, the window wouldn't shut - it was literally a total shack on the beach. I don't mind staying in places like this...if I pay $10 a night but unfortunately we'd booked it over the internet so had no other options + but as soon as we could we moved to a place that was the same price but was like staying in a 5 star hotel, in comparision. The owner was really unhelpful too and thought only about the profit. I've backpacked alot and am use to staying in really rundown places but never before have I stayed in the most disagreable hotel in the world. Whatever you do - don't stay at this place - it may ruin your holiday...
