We had originally booked the ocean view junior suite, but when we arrived, were told they did not have any available. We were offered a free night upgrade to a gran master one bedroom with ocean view and jacuzzi. This room also gives you access to the Royal (adults only resort) next door. Since we were traveling with the kids, this appealed to us, plus we thought it would be nice to have the privacy. The room was lovely, but it did not have a terrace. This is something we really wanted. We have young children and thought it would be nice to sit outside once they were in bed. We decided not to stay in the upgraded suite. The manager on duty offered us another free nights upgrade and to move us the following day to a gran master ocean front one bedroom suite with a huge terrace. We went for it. Do not upgrade until you get there. You will get a better price. We would have paid at least 3 times more for the upgrade if we would have done it ahead of time. It is a good thing that we did change rooms, the original one leaked after the huge rain storm we had. Actually, the resort was leaking everywhere! The lobby and one restaurant we went to had buckets to collect the water. We loved our new room, although to get internet service, you had to sit by the front door. This room did not have an Ipod docking station as advertised. The loft bedroom was upstairs and the dinning area, sofa bed and access to the terrace was downstairs. It was located in the villas close to the Royal not in the main part of the hotel.
The children loved the kid's club and pool. That is how we spent most days. We would take them to the pool in the morning, they would have lunch and spend the afternoon at the kid's club. My husband and I would escape to the Royal for some adult time. The food there is better than CGR. The children suggested we go for a romantic dinner there, too. We went to Maria, Marie's and it was wonderful. We didn't need to hire a babysitter since the kid's club was open until 8:00. The girls that work there made sure the kids were not bored. They made masks, made play doh, baked cookies, built sand castles on the beach, made paper mache piggy banks (they didn't make it home), had a party on the beach with games and food. They also had evening entertainment. We attended the magic show and it was awesome! My daughter was invited up on stage to assist with a trick. If you do use the kid's club, you will be told to check in every hour. You can just call to see if the kids are OK. I'm sure this rule is there to prevent people from leaving their kids all day crying for their parents.
Make sure you book dinners at the Maria's and Il Pescatore. The food at the other restaurants was not the best. Let me just say that I am not a fan of buffets. Also, the drinks were not very strong and were too syrupy. The house wine was not drinkable. We ended up paying extra for wine to drink with several dinners.
We enjoyed our family vacation with the adults only time at the Royal. A few things that would have made this a five star review were better internet service, ipod docking station and softer bed (it was supposed to be a pillow top, but was rather hard) in our room, better service for the guests using their cabanas (which were also included in this room catagory) and better food/drink.
