“Quiet resort away from the touristy chaos of the hotel zone”

Just spent 5 days at the Coral Mar on Pok-ta-Pok in Cancun. I was very pleasantly surprised by the grounds, the room, and the staff. We had a lovely view from our top-floor room of the lagoon and the crazy huge hotels in the distance. It's a $10 cab ride to just about everywhere, but it's worth it to be away from the touristy hubbub. You can also walk to the commercial center if you don't mind a 30-40 minute walk. The weather wasn't too hot this time of year, so the walk was nice. The hotel is on a residential street and it felt very safe; would have been fine walking at night, I think. The restaurant here is very good, delicious guacamole and tortilla soup. The pool was a little chilly since it wasn't super hot while we were here...we would have loved to have a hot tub to come home to after a day of diving, to take off the chill. This is not the place to stay if you want a lot of on-site activities and entertainment. Most of the people staying here are older adults and couples...I'm in my early 40s and me and my two girlfriends were among the youngest, most active people there. We spent one day hanging at the hotel, three days diving and visiting the Mayan ruins, and one day laying on the beach down the road. This was a great mellow place to come back to each night. The massage with Jesus, in a little cabana right on the water, was amazing and very reasonably priced.

Room Tip: Each building has four units, one on top of the other. The top unit has the best views, and try to g...

“Tranquility on the Lagoon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

For a quiet get-a-way in a more secluded location, Coral Mar fits the bill. The rooms were nice, with kitchen amenities, but no oven or dishwasher (the maid will do the dishes). Restaurant on site has excellent food at decent prices. Coral Mar sits on a lagoon facing the larger Cancun hotel zone across the lagoon. Breezy, palm trees, pool and lots of deck chairs make it a relaxed location.

About a mile walk or short cab ride to the bus stop where you can go any where your adventurous spirit takes you. If you want to stay in a cab, you can go about anywhere in Cancun for $10-$15 American each way for four persons (always ask the taxi driver the fare before you get in the cab.) Beware of the "markets", vendors are aggressive and definitely in your face. Fun, if you like bargaining. If you want personal space, forget it!

The late January weather was pleasant with some very sunny days, but quite a bit of overcast skies. Temperature was very comfortable both day and night.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that faces the lagoon. There are people around the pool at night, so if you want qui...

“Nice if you want a more secluded place.”

The view from our room was fantastic - lagoon, palms, sunshine or nightlights of Cancun hotel zone across lagoon. Since it is small resort, it provides tranquility with fewer guests.

The hotel is 2 kilometers / 1.25 miles away from bus stop. The walk is not bad when it is not hot or rainy. Otherwise, the only way to get there is by taxi (90-110 pesos = $8 each way from town). By the way, From/to airport, the hotel has a transportation at $11/person one way.

Upon arrival, the check-in is quick; no rudness, but to pay $7/person tax and $5/week wifi Internet(optional) has to be in cash ($ or peso). You then are offered to wait in the restaurant till 3pm, so do not hurry from the airport.

The restaurant is ok: food tastes ok, nicer presntation, but a bit higher priced then should be. It does provide convenience; just remember to pay with a credit card, otherwise, they will Refuse to give you a receipt. If you do want to cook, buy food at grocery store in downtown (not hotel zone) - more choices, accept Amex, provide you with a receipt, and do not make counting mistakes either.

On Sunday, do not miss the orientation at 9am with coffee and pastries. It is informative on what to do in Cancun and at the hotel. They will also introduce you to the travel agency at the hotel.

We found travel agency upfront with prices and tours' description. Their tours are direct ones, which means they go from the hotel to a destination is back. They do accept credit cards except (sadly) American Express.

The rooms are spacious, clean,  and bright. All floors are granite - great for cleaning, but cold to walk on. The kitchen is well-equipped, and if something is not available - ask the front-desk (ex. Teapot). Some free coffee, tea, and water are provided. There is a TV in a guest-room as well as tiny one in the main bedroom, while there is no TV in small bedroom. There are a few English-language channels, but most are Spanish; some in English with Spanish subtitles. The bed is simple, while comfortable. The walls are thin and windows do not provide enough soundproofeness, which is not a problem if you are tired from walking 1.25 miles from a bus stop.

Internet is not the fastest, while adequate and not expensive.

It is important to understand that this resort does not have a beach, small, and better suited for those looking for tranquility, not party or activity. Their mostly good service, great view, and personal-touch on-site travel agency make it a quite a nice place to go.

“Lovely and quiet resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

We spent a week at the Coral Mar this December and were very pleased. The rooms are spacious and the bed comfortable. The kitchen has no dishwasher or oven but everything else is there. We has a great view of the lagoon from our balcony. The pool is small but the area well maintained. They even have a simulated "beach" with sand and beach chairs overlooking the lagoon. You cannot swim in the lagoon but it's a nice place to relax. The staff is wonderful! Barbara was very helpful. Definitely book your tours with the travel agent at the resort. Raul booked our tours when we arrived and we were very pleased with the service and the tours. Gregorio was our very knowledgeable and friendly tour driver. On the down side, the resort is a few miles from the beach and the resort does not provide transportation (except to the airport for an $11 fee). It's a mile and a quarter walk to the main road where you can get a bus into town or the hotel area. Taxis are available but expensive. We rented a car but would not do that again as the rental was twice as much as originally promised due to unexpected and inflated insurance charges. Then we lost a hubcap on the roads littered with potholes. We were charged $18 for one hubcap when Walmart in town was selling four for $10. The resort should provide a shuttle service to the main road to make it easier to get around. We were very pleased with the resort and especially the staff and would recommend a stay here if you want great service and peace and quiet away from the noisy hotel district.
