I travelled to Cancun on my own for a quiet two weeks of sunshine and relaxation. The minute I arrived it was apparent I was in trouble. Despite having booked a room on an upper floor, I was shown to a ground floor room. Even worse it was right next to a nightclub. Upon further investigation I discovered that the lock was broken and neither the main light in the bedroom or the telephone were working. The air conditioning unit was dripping water. Miraculously the Airtours rep was in the hotel lobby so I went to talk to her. As I was a single girl and feeling very vulnerable there was absolutely no way I was going to stay in a ground floor room with a broken lock. She was very unhelpful and said there was nothing she could do to help. At this point I'm slightly ashamed to say I got very upset (I'd been travelling for 21 hours by then) and demanded a taxi back to the airport. She pointed out that I couldn't return to the airport as I was booked for two weeks and there wouldn't be an aeroplane home. I said I didn't care as I thought I would be safer there than in this hotel. As I was making a bit of a scene in the reception, the manager stepped in and said they could upgrade me to an alternative room. I was shown to a bigger room on an upper floor with a balcony, working lock and chain on the door and full working facilities. This room was OK and I had no problems with the hotel staff. They ran out of butter at breakfast a couple of mornings though. The best thing about the holiday was the weather. I swam with dolphins, went to Chichen Itza and spent a day on the nearby Isla Mujeres, all of which were fantastic. The water park is also good fun. However, as the hotel is on the lagoon, there is no beach so you have to go somewhere else for that. The pool area is very small and i got very bored of being there. By the end of the first week I was looking wistfully at all the planes flying overhead. I can't tell you how happy I was to fly home. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone.
