I read through these reviews 2 days before we were to go to Cancun...too late to make changes, but at least I was prepared.
I have stayed in better, and worse hotels.
Check-in was quite easy and quick. Rooms were somewhat tawdry, bathrooms fairly old and dark, and water had a fairly strong sulfur odor. Spring breakers seem to have done a lot of damage to the facility over the years and the management probably doesn't spend too much in fancy upgrades since everything will just get destroyed anyway.
Grounds are lovely. The pool was wonderful and I was impressed even more after walking up and down the beach for a mile or so, since all the opther hotels seem to have concrete structures abutting the beach. The Oasis actually has a little beach and dune left and isn't completely overbuilt.
Food was fine. My kids enjoyed the buffets since they could really consume large quantities and I looked forward to the meals. Drinks are pretty watery, but people seem to make up for that by heavy intake.
Staff was what one would expect. Good, bad and ugly. For the most part people were quite friendly and fun to deal with.
I wouldn't go again, although I would consider the Grand Oasis, located on the same grounds, but don't panic if you are going--it is not as bad as some of the horror stories here.
Major pluses: Grounds and pool, friendly staff at the two beach bars, playing in the ocean (hotels to south of Oasis have pretty much ALL rock beaches), hanging out at cafeteria style seats next to ocean in shade and breeze
Major minuses: shabby rooms, sulfuric bathrooms, FEW machines in a truly lovely gym.
