My wife and I just returned today (April 15th) from a 4 night stay at the Park Royal Cancun. It was pretty much a last minute trip, but the Park Royal will be on our short list for future trips to Cancun. It is not a 5 star hotel. It isn't really a 4 star hotel simply because of the lack of facilities (only two restaurants and 3 bars). That being said, The PRC is a 3.999 star hotel.
The hotel itself isn't one of the newer hotels in the hotel zone; I would guess it is around 20 years old, but it has aged very well. Everything is very very clean and well kept. Cleanliness seems to be one of their top priorities. We've all seen resorts "hose off" around the pool deck in the evening - the PRC actually takes a buffer with a scrub pad to the entire pool deck every night. In the buffet, they have people dedicated to sweeping up any crumbs that may fall on the floor constantly. I would guess the life expectancy of a crumb on the floor in the buffet is about 20 seconds!
We stayed in a "standard room". It was clean and spacious enough, but lacked a balcony. I think only the Presidential and Ambassador suites have balconies. The furnishings are a little dated, but once again very clean and well kept. Basically, the rooms are just fine, nothing fancy, but nothing to complain about. Nice large shower, plenty of storage, always lots of hot water and an A/C that kept our room as cold as we wanted it. We spent very little time in our room, so that was just fine for us.
The hotel itself consist of two 5 story buildings. One has the reception area, lobby bar, a small gift shop and the restaurants on the lower floors with guest rooms upstairs. The second building is strictly guest rooms on all 5 floors. There are two pools; one is a family and activity pool where they have scheduled activities such as water polo, bingo, fashion shows and the such. The adult only pool is just that - a place to relax and not worry about being beaned with a rubber ball or caught between two 13 year olds having a splash fight. Both pools have bars open during the day, and all the bars stock top shelf brands such as J&B, Canadian Club, Jack Daniels and the like. If beer is your thing, you get a choice of Corona, Corona or Corona (sorry!).
What really makes this place special is the staff. Everyone loves their job, and loves making your stay as special as possible. From the waiters to the bartenders, the maids, the front desk staff - everyone is incredible. The atmosphere among the staff is truly exceptional - this is a 100% team effort to make sure you are happy. Don't forget to pack a pile of $1 bills - a little tip here and there is always nice, and believe me it will be earned - this is the hardest working staff you will ever encounter.
Like I said before, your food choices are limited. There is the buffet, the Italian restaurant and a small grill next to the pool that serves burgers and hot dogs during the day. The buffet is, well, an all-inclusive buffet. Nothing you'll be asking for the recipe for, but a generally good variety of food that wasn't great, but we always found something that we liked - we didn't go hungry. The Italian restaurant is very nice and the food is pretty good (my wife says the Osso Bucco is the best she has ever had). What is going to blow you away is the service. I'm pretty sure it is one waiter and helper assigned to each table. Getting a reservation was no problem, and in hindsight we should have gone to the Italian place more than once.
We really aren't beach people, but the beach was very nice. The PRC provides chairs, those palm leaf shade things and even a life guard. Unlike the Playa del Carmen last year - the PRC has a beach.
We had a great visit at the PRC and will be recommending it to our friends.
