I want to first say that this place is not as bad as some people play it out to be. If you are looking for a top of the line, ritzy hotel, this isn't for you.
This is the first time I've been out of the country, let alone Cancun, and I really do not have anything to compare to. However, I will break this down into some categories. Mind you, this review is coming about a month late, as we stayed from January 5th to the 15th (11 days)
CHECK IN AND ROOM: We were some of the lucky ones who were not "pushed" to the Great Parnasses because they overbooked. When we arrived, a very nice lady came over and dealt with our travel agent (and close friend, who came with us). They brought us house drinks while our room was being prepared. Because we arrived at the hotel around 1:30 pm, our room wasn't immediately ready. That wasn't a problem, though, because we were all hungry and this gave us the opportunity to try out the buffet.
We had the lagoon side, which was quiet and very peaceful. We had a nice view of the moon, at night, and the lagoon. The room was small and did not have a mini fridge or a dresser. The safe was also very small. Those were really my only complaints of the room, though.
FOOD AND DRINK: I must say, the waitstaff was absolutely top notch. They were very friendly, incredibly hard working, and always had a smile on their face. Very different from the work ethic of America. It was a very nice experience. The hotel had several different restaurants; The Pier (seafood restaurant), Sumo (Japanese), The Old Barn (Steakhouse), Shangri La (High class), The Buffet, The bars, and a small little place that was open until 2 am. I thought the food, in EVERY restaurant, was great. I understand you can't please everybody, but for the price we paid, I was very, very pleased with everything, INCLUDING the buffet. Now, I suffer from IBS, pretty bad. So when it comes to food, I'm a pretty harsh critic. While I did suffer, it was NOT because of the food. I continued eating and gorging myself. The Old Barn was by far the best, though. The drinks, yes, they were slightly watered down. But this is how I look at it: It's all inclusive. I'm not there to get drunk everyday. I'm there to relax and have a good time. The fact that the drinks were watered down only meant that you could keep drinking. The waitresses would come around constantly and refill your glasses, so a constant flow was not a problem. If you wanted more alcohol, or better quality, all you had to do was ask.
HOTEL PROPERTY (AND EVERYTHING ELSE): I found the property to be incredibly well maintained. The beach was gorgeous and although the water was rough most of the time we were there, it was still a fantastic time. My only complaint about that, would be the jacuzzi not being hot enough. The groundskeeper constantly came by and emptied our ashtray and you could see maintenance taking care of whatever issues arose. I also found that the other guests were incredibly friendly. We met a lot of fantastic people there, who were repeat guests. To me, that says something. The entertainment staff, I thought, were very engaged in what they did. The music was plentiful and so were the games. Not many people participated, though. The beach party that they had on Saturday night was outrageous and very entertaining.
The surrounding area was also very beautiful. My fiance' and I went to Chichen Itza, one day, booked through the Apple Agent at the hotel. We also went to the Kukulcan Plaza one day, and the larger plaza further down, the next. It only rained heavily the last Saturday that we were there, which to me, wasn't a big deal. We were there for 11 days and had had amazing weather.
My final verdict would be that I would definitely go back to this hotel. I don't like large complexes and wide open spaces, so to me, this was a very comfortable setting where I could enjoy myself, eat and drink as much as I pleased, and just enjoy my time in Mexico.
