“Not As Bad As People Say”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

I want to first say that this place is not as bad as some people play it out to be. If you are looking for a top of the line, ritzy hotel, this isn't for you.

This is the first time I've been out of the country, let alone Cancun, and I really do not have anything to compare to. However, I will break this down into some categories. Mind you, this review is coming about a month late, as we stayed from January 5th to the 15th (11 days)

CHECK IN AND ROOM: We were some of the lucky ones who were not "pushed" to the Great Parnasses because they overbooked. When we arrived, a very nice lady came over and dealt with our travel agent (and close friend, who came with us). They brought us house drinks while our room was being prepared. Because we arrived at the hotel around 1:30 pm, our room wasn't immediately ready. That wasn't a problem, though, because we were all hungry and this gave us the opportunity to try out the buffet.
We had the lagoon side, which was quiet and very peaceful. We had a nice view of the moon, at night, and the lagoon. The room was small and did not have a mini fridge or a dresser. The safe was also very small. Those were really my only complaints of the room, though.

FOOD AND DRINK: I must say, the waitstaff was absolutely top notch. They were very friendly, incredibly hard working, and always had a smile on their face. Very different from the work ethic of America. It was a very nice experience. The hotel had several different restaurants; The Pier (seafood restaurant), Sumo (Japanese), The Old Barn (Steakhouse), Shangri La (High class), The Buffet, The bars, and a small little place that was open until 2 am. I thought the food, in EVERY restaurant, was great. I understand you can't please everybody, but for the price we paid, I was very, very pleased with everything, INCLUDING the buffet. Now, I suffer from IBS, pretty bad. So when it comes to food, I'm a pretty harsh critic. While I did suffer, it was NOT because of the food. I continued eating and gorging myself. The Old Barn was by far the best, though. The drinks, yes, they were slightly watered down. But this is how I look at it: It's all inclusive. I'm not there to get drunk everyday. I'm there to relax and have a good time. The fact that the drinks were watered down only meant that you could keep drinking. The waitresses would come around constantly and refill your glasses, so a constant flow was not a problem. If you wanted more alcohol, or better quality, all you had to do was ask.

HOTEL PROPERTY (AND EVERYTHING ELSE): I found the property to be incredibly well maintained. The beach was gorgeous and although the water was rough most of the time we were there, it was still a fantastic time. My only complaint about that, would be the jacuzzi not being hot enough. The groundskeeper constantly came by and emptied our ashtray and you could see maintenance taking care of whatever issues arose. I also found that the other guests were incredibly friendly. We met a lot of fantastic people there, who were repeat guests. To me, that says something. The entertainment staff, I thought, were very engaged in what they did. The music was plentiful and so were the games. Not many people participated, though. The beach party that they had on Saturday night was outrageous and very entertaining.

The surrounding area was also very beautiful. My fiance' and I went to Chichen Itza, one day, booked through the Apple Agent at the hotel. We also went to the Kukulcan Plaza one day, and the larger plaza further down, the next. It only rained heavily the last Saturday that we were there, which to me, wasn't a big deal. We were there for 11 days and had had amazing weather.

My final verdict would be that I would definitely go back to this hotel. I don't like large complexes and wide open spaces, so to me, this was a very comfortable setting where I could enjoy myself, eat and drink as much as I pleased, and just enjoy my time in Mexico.

Room Tip: The Lagoon View is much quieter than the Beach Side and personally, I think it's a better view.

“Great Hotel, almost! Give it a 9 out of 10!”

While very happy with my recent stay, I feel (as a travel consultant) that there are some things that can be improved.
I would be very happy to stay again as I must state that you have a GREAT staff! They are wonderful.
The restaurants and food were very good, lots of variety and very tasty, bars were well stocked and drinks good. The wait staff (waiters) AMAZING. Room service was very good and speedy. No matter what the hour....
I also visited the Spa (on site) twice. VERY NICE, EXTREMELY COMFORTABLE, CARING, CLEAN, JUST AMAZING. Good quality products, services and staff. Very accommodating and massages WONDERFUL. I had 2 spa days and well worth it!
A/C worked great (no problem there) and balconies a great place to just relax.

The hotel was very clean and always being well maintained by the staff.
What I feel can improved is the fact that there are charges for the Internet (TOO expensive and really should be FREE ), Bureaus for the customers clothes (not enough places to put clothes, as I lived out of my suitcase), Small Refrigerators in the rooms (WITHOUT CHARGES) as you are an all inclusive.
We stayed at the Golden (adults only) and I chose not to go to the Great. Did hear that it looked like the inside of a cruise ship and had a lot of different restaurants that were interchangeable. Some people I did talk with did take the shuttle over, I like what I had and was very happy.
These 3 things would be my ONLY reasons for not returning.

Room Tip: We stayed facing the lagoon. If facing the pool I would think that may be noisy (although I do not k...

“Great time at the Golden”

We had a great time at the Golden Parnassas. We meet a lot of really nice people. All the workers work so hard, the beach, rooms and grounds are well kept and beautiful. The food was good. The drinks were a watered down. (only complaint) Other wise, had a great time with my husband. Would return tomorrow if I could. We did not want to leave.

Room Tip: Ear plugs if you do not get a higher floor, if you are a light sleeper.

“Wish I could give a better review...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We stayed at the Golden Parnassus in January for 5 nights. The hotel is the perfect size we were looking for (on the small side for Cancun) and it is on a beautiful stretch of beach. That is pretty much where it ends...

Guest Services - I really wanted to give these girls a chance. They seem to get such a bad rap on TripAdvisor but alas, I also have to give them a thumbs down. Our check in went smooth enough ending with a short but brief timeshare pitch. We were told that they weren't sure if our room was ready - gave us the key and asked us to check the room. I thought this was pretty odd, but I work at a hotel and figured maybe there systems were down or all other staff were too busy to check on the room. The room was ready so we went to see the bellhop, provided him with our key and he brought our luggage. We then realized we did not have a safety deposit box key or towel key cards or any information at all. I returned to the front desk where I watched the guest service team assist other customers. It seemed like only one person knew what she was doing and all the other team members needed her in order to serve customers. So in effect, all three guest service agents would help one customer at a time as a group. They are very friendly and try to help... they just don't seem to be able to succeed at it. Once it was my turn I explained what I was missing and asked if maybe there was a welcome package or something I was missing. After some checking around, I was told no - I was given everything. When I pressed about it, another girl checked and I was told no again. Finally I got the brains of the operation and she quickly picked up my welcome package from their registration area (where both previous ladies had checked). This comedy continued each time I went to the front desk - whether to ask about local info, change money, check out etc.

Room - the only surprise about the room is that the room is not even remotely the quality that it should be. Furnishings and textiles are old and tired. Our room was very clean and the housekeepers did a wonderful job of keeping it that way. They have tried to implement the "white sheet" hygienic bedding used in many hotels, but once again they miss the mark. Our bed had a flat sheet used as a fitted (common in most hotels), then another flat sheet and then a fiber fill duvet style blanket. The fiber fill duvet was not covered with another sheet - a technique called triple sheeting which assures the guest that they are not sleeping with the "unwashed" portion of the bed clothes close to their skin. Even if the fibre fill duvet is washed after every guest it is still rough and stained and really does not give you the feeling of cleanliness and comfort while sleeping.
Food:
Breakfast was great - everything you could want - great pancakes freshly made. Lunch had a good selection but was ultimately pretty boring and basic. The snack bar was just ok - hamburgers were ok if you’d had a lot to drink. Dinner - We enjoyed the asian restaurant - selection was different but most items tasted the same. We waited 45 min for a table at Red Barn - definitely not worth wait even though it was OK.
Drinks - possibly watered down but given how drunk everyone was at this hotel, I think it's more likely they are watered down as a liability concern for the hotel. Consistency in taste varied. Sometimes when I ordered a daiquiri, I got a margarita and so on.
Service - I can't say enough about the restaurant servers. We had excellent service from almost every restaurant and bar server. The morning/lunch servers remembered your names and your drinks, and even if this is because of tipping, who cares? They still took the time to remember you and make sure they gave you great service. I wish I could take some of these servers and bring them to some of the fabulous hotels I've stayed at. Then I would truly have a perfect vacation.
Atmosphere: I couldn't leave this hotel fast enough and given the service above I felt really bad about that. The clientele at this hotel is what killed it for me. This is your typical "I paid alot of money for this so I'm going to drink as much as I can and get my money's worth" crowd. Only when we went for walks along the beach were we able to get away from the pounding music and screaming drunk hotel guests. We chose a small, adults only hotel to try to get away from it all. This was not it. If you're looking to party, and I know many of those who go to Cancun are, this is definitely the hotel for you. For us, it was a real disappointment. We came for the beach and the ocean - which I love in Cancun - and it is spectacular once again now that they have completed the beach restoration. In future we will stay at a non-all inclusive resort and leave the partying at CocoBongo where it belongs.

Room Tip: Rooms/corridors are very loud - you really can't get away from this. If you want quiet pick a d...

“Fail! Overbooked and a ruined holiday”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Like others within our time period, we arrived to find the hotel was overbooked and we were shuffled off to the other Parnassus for two days. Then came back, didn't get the room we ordered until the next day. Spent half of what was to be a relaxing week living out of suitcase and not getting settled. Had we got the room we ended up with at the beginning I would say it would have been a ok holiday but not the way it turned out. The staff had all the pat answers before we even had questions. It was clear this was a somewhat common occurence. I saw on TA that some people had issues like this but discounted it because there weren't many and the other comments were reasonable but it seems there are more overbook comments now and I would not take the chance again of a ruined holiday. I even booked a deluxe ocean view room thinking the upgrade would lessen the chance of being bumped. No luck. Also, anyone I spoke to kept saying 'Who was your travel agent?' like it was their fault. Also got offered a chance to join the VIP club but it was actually a disguised time share play. A waste of two hours and the big offer was to book next time at 30% off be bypassing your travel agent (beware agents!). Wouldn't go back.

Room Tip: Ocean view 4th or 5th floor. Decks are bigger than on the 6th and the noise isn't as bad up ther...
