We arrived in Cancun at the bus station and after walking and visiting 3 similar priced rooms, we settled for this hotel (which at 560mxn per night including continental breakfast, wifi, ac, pool and TV) is a great deal.

The staff here are very friendly and helpful although english was limited, but that's fine as after all we are in a more real part of mexico than the hotel zone in cancun, which seems just an extension of the US.

There is a pool and a small bar as well as an India restaurant, however we mainly used the hotel as a base from which we could take a day trip to Chichen Itza(you can organize a tour via the hotel and this is highly recommended) or to Xel-Ha.

The location is convenient for the bus station as well as a number of local restaurants just round the corner at Margaritas. There is a supermarket just down road which came in handy for picking up a few supplies.

Overall if you need a clean base to venture out to other parts of mexico this is a great stop over. If however you are looking for something 5* with beach facilities etc then look elsewheres.....

Pros: Near downtown Cancun bus station, near giant supermarket, the #1 bus (among other routes) runs along the street making easy access to & from hotel zone, money exchange places across the street, 7-11 nearby for late night buys, OK area to walk at night.
Cons: Price for room was 700 MXN pesos per night, tons of reconstruction which makes the place look a lot worse than their website, pool area was not at all inviting, common area with couch/chairs on each floor looked dirty and trashed all the time, no elevator.
Other: Shower spray as well as door to shower were pathetic. Room floors were cleaned with strongly scented cleaners.
I speak/teach Spanish so I can't comment on staff's English-speaking ability.
I walked around the area & found many more places worth their lower prices where I'll stay next time.

I stayed at the Parador New Years week 2003-04. It is clean and rooms have cable tv and air conditioning. There is a small bar in the lobby which has a limited selection of food items. The staff is pleasent however do not speak a lot of English. The small restaurant that was next door has closed down, so it is necessary to cross the street to eat, get coffee etc. There is a major grocery store about a block away which has a huge selection of ready to eat items. The room rate was the same as posted- 450 peso's a day.
