Stayed here for a week in January after booking an out of this world offer from Jetsetter.com ($150/night including all-inclusive for 2 and $100 spa credit!). I also joined Omni's loyalty program to get the free Wifi, and highly recommend it. Overall had a great time and really enjoyed the property, but probably wouldn't stay here again and wouldn't recommend to other wheelchair users considering the number of other options in Cancun. For those who don't have special needs, this resort is an excellent choice, as we otherwise loved it.
ARRIVAL & CHECK-IN
Doormen were super friendly and helpful, getting us and all of our stuff out of the car and inside quickly. The front desk is the big downer considering the otherwise excellent level of service we received throughout the resort. When I booked about a month prior to arrival I noted that I would need a wheelchair accessible room with two beds, re-iterated the fact in a confirmation e-mail Jetsetter asked me to send directly to the resort, AND called the resort about a week prior to arrival to confirm that they would be able to accommodate the request. Low and behold, when I checked in and went up to the room, not was it not one of the accessible rooms (the resort has 4 total) but it only had one king sized bed. Unlike American hotels where you can usually at least fit the chair into the bathroom, the non-accessible rooms have such narrow bathroom doorways that this is impossible even with a small manual chair. When I went down to reception to ask for a room change they said all of the accessible rooms were occupied (I can only assume by people who didn't need them as I didn't see any wheelchair users our first few days at the resort) as were all double bedded rooms in general (and they tell honeymooners/couples that there's no king availability...obviously they can't allocate rooms properly to save their lives!), and that they would give us a second roll-away bed and switch us to the right room the next day but we'd have to spend the first night in the room we got. It's highly annoying that the Omni doesn't block accessible rooms when there is a true need for them and they're given serious advanced notice, it's not simply a nice-to-have, being able to get into the bathroom is a basic necessity. Room change next day was not without hassle either. As we were waiting for our new room to become available, we ordered room service for lunch from our old room. Right as room service was about to come the front desk called us and told us we had to be out of our old room immediately and that the waiter was waiting by our new room and that one of us had to go down there "right now". Getting to another part of the property with a wheelchair does not take one minute and by the time we got to the new room the waiter was gone and it took another 15-20 minutes to track down our lunch and three phone exchanges with room service and the front desk to get it back at which point it wasn't hot anymore.
ROOMS
The first room we had was on the highest floor of the main building, large with a huge king bed and a great view of the lagoon, but no balcony. The bathroom was quite small, and the sink was in separate area with a huge vanity. The second room had two double beds and was on the ground floor facing the pools, slightly smaller than the first room but with an outdoor patio that made up the rest of the space and had two padded arm chairs and a partial ocean view from sitting outside. The bathroom was large enough to fit the wheelchair, but not ideally designed for wheelchair users. Obviously whoever did the adaptations was pretty clueless on what wheelchair users actually need. There were three large grab bars in the tub, but no hand-held shower, and it was impossible to fit the accompanying shower bench that was provided without placing it in the tub sideways, which would make it a bit unstable for anyone who needs back support or is larger in size. There was no grab bar by the toilet, and it was impossible to roll under the sink as there was a wooden bar under the vanity that blocked access. Compared to access I've seen at other American chain resorts in the Caribbean, it was really poorly designed. If you want peace and quiet it's not the best location, because you can hear all of the announcements and loud music from the pool area throughout the day. It stopped around 10pm so didn't really bother us, but if you like napping during the day, it would be bothersome. The room connects to the unit next door and the walls aren't too thick because if you have noisy neighbors, you can hear EVERYTHING they say. The first night we had the misfortune of neighbors who couldn't distinguish their trailer park voices from their indoor voices, but thankfully they weren't there too long and after some debate chose to leave their room to party (THANK GOD!).
FOOD
Overall I really enjoyed the food, especially the Pina Colada restaurant for lunch and La Paloma for breakfast and dinner. Room service was excellent and fast when the front desk wasn't involved. Since we booked all-inclusive, it was nice to be able to get whatever we wanted wherever without having to worry about carrying anything around or signing anything. All we had to do was flash our wristbands and give our room number and we were set! La Paloma had different themed nights, some better than others (loved Caribbean, Italian and BBQ nights, Mexican night was good but not up to my expectations [I've had way better Mexican food at home in NYC, and this being Mexico and all...], only didn't like Arabian/Mediterranean night, and didn't partake in Asian night). Pina Colada is right on the beach and we really loved the daily fish dish with garlic sauce and all of the appetizers (especially nachos, tostadas, calamari, octopus, and fish tacos). The only bad dish I had there was the mussels, the dish arrived half cold, and though I only ate a few, I think this was the culprit in me being sick the next morning. The sushi bar was quite good, but we enjoyed eating on the beach so much, I only had it once. Since we stayed 7 nights, we were allowed to book 3 dinners at the a la carte restaurants Da Vinci (Italian) and La Diva (Indonesian - Pina Colada turns into La Diva at night).
We booked all 3 nights at Da Vinci after reading the great reviews here, the service was excellent (Juan Carlos and Jorge were great!) but really didn't find the food to be anything special. Appetizers are excellent, but mains aren't that great and desserts are very hit or miss. Loved the eggplant and squash and beef carpaccio apps, shrimp cappuccino soup, and the molten chocolate cake dessert. Filet mignon, osso bucco, shrimp scampi, pasta, creme brulee and tiramisu ranged from meh to mediocre. Because I was sick with some minor food poisoning the morning of our third reservation, we chose to forgo that night and eat at the buffet instead (which honestly had better meat for BBQ night than the meat dishes at Da Vinci). The restaurant is down about a small staircase of about 10 steps with railings on both side. I can walk a bit so was easily able to traverse with the help of the maitre d' and hostess, but could be an issue with a heavy motorized chair.
Drinks were great everywhere and there are waiters and waitresses walking the beach and pool areas at all times. NOTHING beats lying on the beach and sipping on a pina colada! The lobby bar serves AWESOME cocktails, I highly recommend the chocolate martini.
POOLS & BEACH
There are three big pools and a lovely split-level pool area with plenty of loungers chairs (could use more umbrellas though). We spent all of our pool time by the top pool with the volleyball net and didn't find the water to be as terribly cold as most reviewers have. The activities guy was a bit too loud and it got to be a bit annoying to listen to his many announcements. Few people participated in the activities like bingo and trivia, and when they did they were all in an area by the bar so the microphone and loud speaker were pretty excessive.
The beach was way quieter and more enjoyable. The sand is soft and warm but packed in enough to make walking on the beach easy enough. There are no beach wheelchairs to be had or paths on the sand, so if you can't leave your chair, the closest you can get is the patio of the Pina Colada restaurant. There were red flags every day so no swimming in the ocean (huge waves!) but there were plenty of loungers and chairs, so it was pleasant enough to sit on the shore with my feet in the water. The loungers on the beach are rough plastic and not all that comfortable, I wish they had padded them or used the mesh loungers like they had by the pool, which were infinitely more comfortable. To get to the beach, there are six ramps, many of them exceptionally steep by US standards, however, staff is very helpful and it never took ore than a minute to find a security guard or waiter to help give a push. A few days in we found an alternative path by the east villas that bypassed some of the steeper ramps.
SERVICE
Overall, service at the Omni is exceptional in the restaurants and around the property. Everyone was pulling away chairs and ready to lend a hand the moment they saw us coming. Drinks and food orders were delivered quickly and efficiently, and always with a smile. Everyone there works super hard and has a great attitude, always willing to go the extra mile to make sure guests have a good time and the place is sparkling.
