I spent three nights over Easter at the HIE in Cancun and felt that it matched my expectations. Amid the pricey mega-resorts all along the Zona Hotelera, this hotel represents very good value. Our room was clean with a good bathroom, brisk A/C and surprisingly comfortable bedding.
The hotel is built in the style of a large hacienda, with the rooms in a square around the central pool area and the complimentary breakfast (a nice touch) is served in a shaded area at one end of the garden. The breakfast buffet was varied and filling, though it does get very busy near the end.
Visitors to the hotel should have already checked out the location, but those that haven't may be caught slightly unaware. The hotel is located a 5-10 minute walk from the main road that runs all along the ZH, so you need to walk up there for the beach (pop through the lobby of the Intercontinental Presidente to get to one of the nicer beaches within walking distance of this hotel) or to pick up the frequent buses that run along the strip. Alternatively the hotel does have a a taxi rank and there are usually vehicles waiting; fares in Cancun are fixed by distance so 80 - 100 MXN gets you to the middle of things or to places like La Isla. We knew all this in advance and were fine with it.
On the whole we were happy with our stay at the HIE Cancun and for people that want somewhere a bit quieter away from the resort hotels and don't mind a short walk, I would recommend it as a good value option.
