This review is based on the trip my wife and I took with 2 other couples for a week - January 29 - February 3. We had an Ocean View room in the original building on the top floor, the view was spectacular and the room was very clean, but the bed was rather hard, balcony was small (only wide enough for a chair sideways) and the water / shower would go off randomly. The mini bar consisted of 6 sodas and 2 Coronas. Even though we didnt spend much time in the room, it could have been better.
Room service had a limited menu, but the food was quite good and sent to our room within 20 minutes, very speedy.
The staff was very good, very nice and providing anything you asked for, no questions asked. Only thing is they can speak a little more English, especially being a resort where many Americans go to.
The food quality was exceptional for an all-inclusive. THe Italian restaurant was the best by far and the Oriental was also quite good. The seafood (La Concha) was above average, but they seem to use the same fish, tilapia maybe, for each of their dishes with a different sauce. Dont forget to hit the Cafe Sole, the Ice Cream is great and they have mini sandwiches to hold you over. There is also a snack bar with burgers and hot dogs, thats pretty good as well.
When your done stuffing your face and need to wash it down, definitely hit the swim up bar. Roberto took care of us and kept the shots coming. Some advice, if you see the brand of alcohol you like, ask for it, they tend to use generic liquor versus Stoli, Belvedere, etc... and ask for an extra shot, they will be more than happy to assist. The buddha bar in the lobby is open until 1AM, but the ambience is somewhat chill, so dont fall asleep.
The location was good, within walking distance to the Flea Market, Senor Frogs and Coco Bongo area. The bus also stops in front of the hotel and is a 2 minute ride.
The beach is great, very wide, but they are lacking beach chairs. For a resort of this size, there was about 40 chairs and no palapas on the beach near the water. Also, there is no wait service on the beach, so you need to trek back to the resort for a cold one.
The atmosphere was OK. The music in the buddha / lobby bar was more of a lounge with Kenny G type of instrumentals playing. The Ekinox lounge had more action with its own bar and it overlooks the main road. Both are open until 1AM.
Comparing this to the Majestic Elegance in Punta Cana, my only other all-inclusive, I would say this is just an above average resort. I am no club rat, but there was no onsite club. No shops for shopping and the daily entertainment was lacking, usually going from 8:30 - 10 when most people are dining.
I don't know if I would go back, but its not the resort, but Cancun. we are in our mid 30s and just expected a little more.
