My husband picked this place because he didn't want to stay in the mall-like hotel zone with all the other Americans. This place is more frequented by Mexican and European travellers.
This was a great place to stay for many reasons, but mainly the service was unparallelled. And we paid less than a hundred a night.
Clean, comfortable. Mexican TV with some shows in English or with subtitles.
The food here and other places we ate in Cancun was the best, absolutely the best I ever tasted. Here in the hotel they have a lime soup and a pork dish that I believe is called bok chuk -- fantastic.
Great room service here. Even the pizzas are very good, though maybe a little different from what you're used to. These seem to have a crescent roll crust. But they're still quite good, especially the Hawaiian style with ham and pineapple. Please note that they do not cost $100. The exchange rate is roughly 10 to 1, so it's cheap. Keep this in mind when tipping.
The mojitos at the downstairs bar are great.
I can't even tell you what the service is like. If you leave your room for ten minutes, it is cleaned. If you send laundry/dry cleaning, it's delivered to your door a few hours later. If you order food, it's there in 10 minutes. If you have stayed in hotels before, you know this far exceeds expectations.
We were treated like kings here. In fact, one morning there was a problem when a scheduled tour neglected to pick us up, and not fewer than half a dozen hotel employees noticed us waiting, came over to find out if anything was wrong, and took it upon themselves to contact the tour agency. Employees at this hotel for the most part speak good to excellent English.
We love this place because the food, service and location are so great, and we will always stay here when we visit Cancun.
In fact, about a year after this visit, we chose to vacation on nearby Isla Mujeres, and were disappointed. Mainly, the food was awful. Too many visitors makes for bad Mexican food. You need the real deal.
Not to diss Isla Mujeres, but go for a visit, definitely go, but don't stay there. The ferry over is great. A band played on the open top deck, and people travelling on the boat danced spontaneously.
It was lovely, and there is a beautiful New Orleans style cemetery there, all pink and blue plaster and and plastic-shielded shelters with flowers, photos and saints. Just get off the ferry, turn left, wander the downtown, the beach is only a few blocks, and you will never forget the blue opal beauty of the Caribbean.
Many people rent golf carts or motorcycles to explore Isla Mujeres. Please do not take a cab, because they are tiny, not air conditioned, and you will be crammed in with many strangers, and forced to endure an excessively long drive as the cabbie drops off his various passengers around the island.
I'm sorry, I perhaps would have considered it a great adventure twenty years ago, but as it was, I was hyperventilating worse than on an airplane.
Also, if you go to the bullfight, it is like watching a torture execution, I was crying. It's fun to go to a baseball game if possible, Los Tigres.
From the hotel, wander to Avenida Tulum and beyond -- when it's not too hot. Only a few blocks. There's a great restaurant called Metro Soul. Huge, cheap portions of delicious food delivered by scantily clad lovelies. Everyone was so helpful and accomodating. There are so many places to explore nearby and around. I don't know if I'd go in the middle of the night , but as it was I felt very comfortable.
