I booked one of the penthouse condos from a private party through greatrentals(-) back in early October 2005 (pre-Wilma). After the hurricane, I called the owners directly to find out how the building and condo held up. I was assured that the unit was in great shape and the building, while sustaining some blown out windows was rapidly being repaired. Considering this information and various other websites on Cancun, we decided to go ahead with our trip in January.
Upon leaving the airport in Cancun, the damage to vegetation was highly visible, i.e. palms either bald, toppled over, or supported by sticks. There is construction going on all over the place, but it is slow going. Most of the major hotels have sustained damage with many boarded up and construction blocking access.
I tried to keep my hopes high, but once we got to Suites Brisas, I was devastated. The place looked like a bomb had detonated. There was a huge scaffolding covering the one side of condos with workers hammering, drilling, and shouting until 5pm. On the other side, nearer the ocean, where our penthouse was, there were just a lot of vacant units. Many had boarded up front windows. Some just had broken front windows that you could stare through. Damaged furniture and musty smells were everywhere.
The unit we rented did have windows and was clean; however it reminded me of what living in a tenement building must be like. Both units on either side of this condo have no back windows. They were completely blown out. One unit had a bunch of feral cats climbing in and out. This was not the condo or environment we had paid for. We expressed our displeasure to the owners whom at first tried to make us feel like we were at fault for complaining. However, after some wrangling, we came to an agreement that we would stay one night and then leave in the morning. Part of our deposit was used for payment and the rest was returned.
We ended up staying at the Royal Caribbean, which was in great shape. However, moving hotels took up the better part of two days. While there, we did enjoy the beautiful beaches, the swimming pools, the food, and trips to Playa del Carmen.
Bottom line is that anyone planning to visit Cancun should be aware that there is still major damage to most of the hotels and night clubs. In my opinion, at the rate things are moving, it is going to take a long time (2+ years) before it is back to the beautiful vacation destination that it once was.
