“Good Value in good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2011

If you want family accommodations with a quaint Mexican feel, an available kitchen, and is near everything in the Hotel Zone but in a quieter location, this could be the hotel for you. It costs much less than the pricier hotels nearby but has the same restaurants and stores nearby. There are apartments with full kitchens, studios with a kitchenette (microwave and refrigerator but no dishes or flatware or pans) or a bedroom only. If you get the apartment, make sure there are dishes, etc. if that’s what you paid for. Our first room was without these and when we called the office, we were moved.
However, some negatives to watch for:
No elevators (4 floors to the top – DO let the bellhop carry your luggage up), no room service or mini bar, drawers that stick, shutters that stick, hot water that takes forever and really isn’t hot, being charged for any little thing extra (maid to do dishes - $3 pesos, clean towels every day $1.5 pesos per day), no bar (there are plenty in the area), internet access in the lobby only, and noisy refrigerator.
Also, as with any resort area, beware the concierge; he wants to sell you a vacation home.
All in all, it was a good place to stay for the price.

“Simple clean hotel in the most convient location in Cancun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2010

The hotel was clean and comfortable and is right at the heart of the hotel zone and entertainment area The hotel is within walking distance of every need. Congo Bongos, Daddy O's and other nightclubs are right here, two Oxxo's, gifts shops, and restaurants and plenty of shopping at a mall. There is easy public access to the beach within a short walk to (just just to north side of Congo Bongo's is the closest) and farther to the south as well. There are 2 public beach clubs you can pay to use - Hard Rock Beach Club is behind Congo Bongo. Once you are on the beach you can walk the length of the beach and stop at any hotel along the way. The beach is public for its entire length, and some hotels have nice beach clubs. You could sit at some, perhaps for a fee like the beach clubs, or buy some food and drink to appease them since your not a guest. The hotel gives you cards to redeem for pool and beach towels ($20 charge each if you lose the cards).
There is free wifi in the lobby, pool and restaurant. Depending on what unit you are in you can receive it in the room as well, though the service was prone to interruption in all of the locations. I probably had it available 75% of the time i tried to use it.
The room was large and clean with a comfortable king bed and a dinning area. We had a unit with a kitchenette (2.4 cu. ft. frig and a microwave - no stove.) however the kitchen was not stocked with any utensils of any type - I found that strange.
The grounds of the hotel are pleasant with a nice area to sit and watch the sunset. The pool and hot tube were clean and inviting.
We did ask about doing some laundry, we had noticed a locked laundry room next to the lobby, yet the staff told us they don't have a guest laundry - ? Perhaps it was out of order or just for timeshare guests..?
We did not have any problems with the desk staff making us offers for day trips or try any type of sales pitch of any kind - we booked through Expedia.
There is 24 hour security and we never felt the hotel was unsafe.
Bottled water is a necessity - though that isn't surprising, and the shower head could be updated.
If your looking for a cheap clean hotel with the best location this is it.

“Home away from Home”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2010

My husbands family (all 24 of us) travel here nearly every March.
We have the double rooms with our teens in the room next to us and we have a bathroom each. We also have a fridge and little kitchen with frying pan, cups, plates and utensils, everything you need to cook in your mexican 'home'!
We love the food and service at the Palappa and its great to get up early and sit under the thatched restaurant and look out at the water and the palm trees.
I have to say i hate the loud techno music we hear pounding at all hours from nearby clubs but i assume many hotels have to deal with that.
Their gym is useless, last time i used it the seat of the exercise bike came off (and not im petite- it wasnt my fault!)
They have a tennis court and will supply tennis balls and a basketball to have fun with. Great little walking trails around the hotel area where all the bushes along the water have been cut into the shapes of animals!
Its a matter of perspective, the windows are a little rickety or dont close sometimes, and dont trip in your room because everything is made of concrete or something! but we love it.

“Great location but beware the aggressive sales pitches”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2010

I'd read every review about this hotel before I booked - having a beach view wasn't that important to me so the fact that Clipper Club is a block away from the nearest beach was no biggie for me. As the transport van rounded the corner to pull into the hotel I saw we were right in the middle of it all and was thinking "oh let this be my hotel!" and it was! Not one time did I need to take a taxi or bus to get to anything interesting in Cancun (WalMart the single exception but I'm not sure if interesting could describe Walmart..)

The room was fine but I probably should have paid a few pesos more per night to get an upgraded room with a fridge. The grounds are kept very nicely and the serpentine pool was awesome. I never ate at the restaurant so I can't comment on it.

My only concern about the hotel is the aggressive sales pitch you get the moment you walk in the door. I wish I'd read the previous reviewer's tip about saying you don't have a credit card BEFORE I got there! I can guarantee you will be pitched a timeshare at least 3 times per each day that you are in Cancun. Normally I'd say avoid them at all costs BUT I did get a free all-inclusive day at Xel-Ha for spending a couple hours at a timeshare near Tulum. (I deal I did not get from Cancun Clipper Club - they were intent on selling me a day at Xel-ha for $160 but luckily for me I declined). The couple hours spent were totally worth it for me but, as with everything, your mileage may vary (lucky for me i was a solo traveler so didn't have to argue the point with anyone!) :-)

So bottom line - Cancun Clipper Club=great location and great value for what it is - a 2.5 star hotel a block from the beach, but watch out for the overly aggressive sales pitches the moment you walk into the lobby!

“Discount Gem that's Near Everything!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2010

Let's get one thing straight right off...this is a discount hotel. If you are accustomed to the best accommodations, you will not be impressed. However, if you seek an extremely affordable basic accommodation that's near lots of really cool stuff, then you can't miss with this place!

We paid $48 US a night for a basic room. You can also get a studio with kitchenette and a whole suite (also affordable). It was a tiled adobe-type room with a king size, comfortable bed, air conditioner, nice TV, tub and shower in bath. There's a safe in the room with a key for an extra fee, too!

The hotel has very nicely kept, groomed grounds, a lovely pool with kiddie pool, an outdoor, covered restaurant with swim up bar, and a little kids' play area with jungle gym and swings. We also really enjoyed just hanging out on the shaded lawn chairs that overlook the lagoon. Don't let the condition of the parking lot, which you will see upon entrance, fool you. It's nice everywhere else.

There is a beautiful beach across the street and through a safe-ish alley, on which the $300/night hotels are located. We felt right at home going over there and enjoying the white sand and azure waters. There are also lots of great clubs and restaurants within walking distance (Coco Bongo, Dady'O, Sweet, Carlos & Charlie's, Hard Rock, more) a super shopping mall (Plaza del Caracol), the Convention Center, and flea markets. Getting a taxi is hard to avoid! Buses galore, too, if you want to go down town on the cheap!

One thing to remember is that there is no purified tap in your room. You must purchase bottled water at a store (lots are nearby) for drinking and brushing your teeth. Also, the "guest services" person will try like heck to get you to go on a time share tour. We told them we didn't have a major credit card because we'd paid with a debit card, and that got us out of the sales pitch! A small inconvenience for such a great discount hotel!
