“Just what we wanted”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Love the Old Spanish style hotel and decorations! With only 24 rooms, it's unlike the big chain hotels that fill up the Cancun coastline. Staff were helpful. The Standard room with kitchenette (what we booked) is more than large enough for two people -- we didn't really need the kitchen, but we read one of the reviews and it said the standard room might be too small for two adults. And we enjoyed the extra space (although we didn't see the standard room for ourselves). We had the lagoon view room on the top floor -- the staff gave us the top floor b/c we mentioned we were on honeymoon. The view was nice, but I would have preferred the ocean view. You would need to book 1-Bedroom or 2-Bedroom to have an ocean view. None of the standard rooms (with or without kitchenette) has ocean view -- so be aware of this when you book! In short, totally enjoyed our stay there! Highly recommend!

Room Tip: Book 1-Bedroom or 2-Bedroom to have an ocean view. The standard rooms (with or without kitchenette...

“Comfortable, quiet place to stay at a reasonable rate”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

While the hotel could use an updating that doesn't mean it isn't a great place to stay, it is everything you need in a great location and much more affordable than other hotels in the zone.
The staff are friendly and provide practical advice on how to get to what you want to see in Cancun and the Yucatan.

Room Tip: upgrade to a bigger room, the views are fantastic and the kitchenettes are nice to have when you get...

“Another Wonderful Stay”

We travel Mexico and the Caribbean quite a bit, and have never returned to the same place, until now. This was our second stay at Avalon Baccara. It's not your usual big Cancun resort, but rather an isolated oasis in the middle of the Cancun Hotel Zone. On either side of the hotel, there are large mega resorts, but when you are at Avalon Baccara you barely realize there are other hotels near you. It's an older presidential mansion that was converted into a hotel. I think there are only about 25 or so rooms, yet they still manage to provide excellent service. There is a pool bar and restaurant, as well as a regular restaurant. We ate breakfast there almost every day. We stayed in one of the Honeymoon suites - very worth the extra money to have the beautiful view and space. The place is super
clean. What makes it special though is the staff. Everyone from the maids, to reception, to Juan the bartender, to Roberto our bartender/waiter made us feel special from the moment we arrived.

If you are looking for a loud party atmosphere and nonstop entertainment, you won't like it here. If you want to experience Mexico and have some peace and quiet at the same time, don't hesitate to go to Avalon Baccara. We will definitely go back again.

Room Tip: Pay extra for one of the honeymoon suites.

“Wonderful Base for Yucatan Vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

The Avalon Baccara Cancun was our base for a wonderful two-week vacation in the Yucatan. We just got back last week and have wonderful memories.

Avalon Baccara Cancun: Attentive staff, clean bright spacious rooms and suites, reasonably priced, beautiful private beach, easy walking distance to shopping, free parking on site, secure room safes, nice lobby with WiFi, a swimming pool which is cheery and a great place to sit and read a book. The suite we stayed in was magnificent! It had an outdoor jacuzzi, ample space for food preparation and dining. The Avalon Baccara delivered very good value for money. The building is very charming. I would have hated staying in one of those cold, impersonal pseudo-Mayanesque hotel towers that blot the glorious sky of Cancun and charge high prices for a sterile experience. Fortunately, the Baccara was there as a human-scale option. We found that wading/swimming in the ocean was good at the Avalon Grand, which is a short walk from the Avalon Baccara and has a regular lifeguard and good shelf of sand extending about two hundred feet from the shore.

The downside of the Baccara were minor things. The drive way, although quaint, is sinuous and steep, but that just means that you need to shift your rental car down to second gear before you make the ascent. The beds are somewhat hard, but frankly I found them an excellent surface for sleeping. Not having WiFi in the room or suite would bother some people, but I think this actually helps to set a less frenetic pace for a vacation. There was a really intense tropical downpour one day, but the water from two leaks in our suite was quickly wiped up by the staff.

“Home Away From Home”

We have just returned from a wonderful two week stay at Avalon Baccara. Every time we come here, it feels like we are coming home. The staff is so friendly and those who have been there for some time always remember us and make us feel welcome. Humberto is in charge, and he is marvelous. He would do anything to make our stay relaxing and comfortable. The apartments are airy and authentic looking. The ocean is beautiful and the sky so big. It is the perfect place to escape and just relax. We tend to dislike big hotels with all the entertainment and bustle. There are plenty of places like that. Baccara is the perfect spot for those who are looking for a quiet, beautiful, old fashioned place to stay, with the best staff you could hope for.

Room Tip: We prefer the ocean side.
