I had not actually intended on staying here, I had booked Avalon Bacara but upon arrival noticed an atrocious number of stairs and no real accessible way to avoid them and there is no elevator in the hotel so being stuck on the top floor was not going to work for me and my ailing knees...I contacted the front desk and after a long back and forth with the manager they offered me a room on the first floor, but I would be stuck in the hotel not being able to manage the entrance way stairs. I tried to cancel my reservation and was going to be charged for my full stay, in an effort appease me the manager had me cart my stuff up the hill past some beautiful construction to look at a room at the Avalon Grand. I was tired and my fight was gone so I accepted the alternative but not being entirely pleased with the situation I contacted Orbitz to see if I could cancel my second night...the poor customer service representative told me she was snapped at by the manager when trying to resolve this issue. I went to the front desk to address the matter and was told that my best option would be just to check out of the hotel and either accept the charges or fight with orbitz and the sales team later to get my money back...not helpful. I was locked out of my room later that evening and after about an hour of me sitting in the hallway waiting for 1 of 5 people they had try to fix the door they finally let me in my room with no key so I couldn't leave. I scheduled a early morning flight and planned on leaving anyway so I just went to bed. I did not receive my wake up call and missed my flight...went to the front desk to get a key for my room and again the door was broken. Mind you in this whole thing I've never once been offered an apology or acknowledgement of understanding or empathy. Finally by the time I returned to the hotel later I was given a new key....next day...again no wake up call and another missed flight. Thankfully I was checking out and have reasonably good standing with the airline so making alternative arrangements wasn't a problem but the lack of organization or general practice of hotel management here is awful. I will say they employ some very friendly staffers though that made tolerating the situation a bit easier- with friendly smiles and courteous gestures of holding the door...but I can't say that makes up for anything. It wasn't until I was waiting for my shuttle and someone in passing saw that I was clearly fuming and asked if I would like to speak to a manager..I said no I just want to go home...he got a manager anyway and she in the most condescending of manners asked "I was here the whole time, why didn't you say anything?" Seeming not to believe that I had had any trouble. Aside from my personal kvetching this place isn't anything to speak of...its not close to anything except a flamingo market and an outback...the construction next door is obtrusive, the drinks are fairly priced, I can't speak to the food, and every lounge chair on the beach is malfunctioning, if you want to relax you can't because the dj at the pool is obnoxiously loud...I don't know what the cost of this hotel normally is but its probably too much.
