I had not actually intended on staying here, I had booked Avalon Bacara but upon arrival noticed an atrocious number of stairs and no real accessible way to avoid them and there is no elevator in the hotel so being stuck on the top floor was not going to work for me and my ailing knees...I contacted the front desk and after a long back and forth with the manager they offered me a room on the first floor, but I would be stuck in the hotel not being able to manage the entrance way stairs. I tried to cancel my reservation and was going to be charged for my full stay, in an effort appease me the manager had me cart my stuff up the hill past some beautiful construction to look at a room at the Avalon Grand. I was tired and my fight was gone so I accepted the alternative but not being entirely pleased with the situation I contacted Orbitz to see if I could cancel my second night...the poor customer service representative told me she was snapped at by the manager when trying to resolve this issue. I went to the front desk to address the matter and was told that my best option would be just to check out of the hotel and either accept the charges or fight with orbitz and the sales team later to get my money back...not helpful. I was locked out of my room later that evening and after about an hour of me sitting in the hallway waiting for 1 of 5 people they had try to fix the door they finally let me in my room with no key so I couldn't leave. I scheduled a early morning flight and planned on leaving anyway so I just went to bed. I did not receive my wake up call and missed my flight...went to the front desk to get a key for my room and again the door was broken. Mind you in this whole thing I've never once been offered an apology or acknowledgement of understanding or empathy. Finally by the time I returned to the hotel later I was given a new key....next day...again no wake up call and another missed flight. Thankfully I was checking out and have reasonably good standing with the airline so making alternative arrangements wasn't a problem but the lack of organization or general practice of hotel management here is awful. I will say they employ some very friendly staffers though that made tolerating the situation a bit easier- with friendly smiles and courteous gestures of holding the door...but I can't say that makes up for anything. It wasn't until I was waiting for my shuttle and someone in passing saw that I was clearly fuming and asked if I would like to speak to a manager..I said no I just want to go home...he got a manager anyway and she in the most condescending of manners asked "I was here the whole time, why didn't you say anything?" Seeming not to believe that I had had any trouble. Aside from my personal kvetching this place isn't anything to speak of...its not close to anything except a flamingo market and an outback...the construction next door is obtrusive, the drinks are fairly priced, I can't speak to the food, and every lounge chair on the beach is malfunctioning, if you want to relax you can't because the dj at the pool is obnoxiously loud...I don't know what the cost of this hotel normally is but its probably too much. Explore your options and stay someplace else...

I am a member and come every year to enjoy the weather and also the wonderful people who work here.W e were here on Nov.5th and the weather was outstanding. Juan the host was his usual friendly self.Yes the place needs some work done to the rooms but the outside is in great shape as is the beach . Mr. Kelly the owner is in jail and I myself hope that the place will be sold to a large hotel corp so they can put some money into the place but yet keep outside beauty as it stands know. For older people its great because you don't have to walk far to get from your room to the beach, restaurant of pool.

Room Tip: older people first floor

“Great hotel on a budget”

We stayed here for a few days after spending 4 nights in Cozumel and the first night my husband and I were very tired and I was very sea sick from taking the ferry from Cozumel and not so lucky for us, we had a very loud group of young kids as neighbors. We called the front desk and the hotel staff were very accommodating and moved us to a new room. I was very pleased with this. The bathrooms were very nice and the shower was large enough for two people. The beach was very nice and the location was great. All around a lovely experience.

Room Tip: I would ask for the 2nd building, we had a room in the first building and I think they were mainly l...

“Ok.. but know what you're getting into”

We booked this on orbitz 'cos we thought we got a good deal. It was a Jr. suite with ocean view and a kitchenette. First the plus... It is a small resort, so not many people which we felt was nice. It was quieter and we didn't bump into people wherever we went. We did get a room facing the ocean and the infinity pool and it was lovely... waking up to the sound of waves every morning (I still could hear the waves after we came back :-)!).. watching the sun rise every morning.. it was truly a wonderful experience. The Bella Vista restaurant was pretty good. Being vegetarians we asked for some changes to their original menu and they obliged. Their guacamole was one of the best I had while in Cancun. The room maids, the front desk and generally all the people were very friendly and obliged to our requests. Now for the minus... the first thing I really didn't like was that the floor was always wet in our room. The windows were leaking b'cos of rains and once we step out into the balcony and back, our feet were wet too. Being tiled floors, my legs were aching trying to keep friction. My 2 year old did fall down a couple of times too and my 6 year old refused to walk without shoes! A few mats/rugs would have solved the problem. Just like the other reviewers have pointed out, a lot.. a lot of steps.. spiral in most cases.. but it just gave me an excuse for a work out.. so I'm fine with it! Couple of minor irritants... the person checking me in told me the room was facing the lagoon and I was upset.. but it ended up facing the beach :-o! I was surprised!! At the Bella Vista restaurant, we asked to pack the left-over pizza. When we opened it at dinner, a few slices were missing!! The kitchenette pictures showed a mini kitchen like area in the rooms, but all we got was a wet bar with a MW, blender, toaster and coffee maker. The rooms and furniture looked old and tired and definitely need an update.

Room Tip: Elevator only in the main building in the lobby.

“still love but sad”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

we have had a time share there since 2005. its our 4th time staying at the grand. love what they have done to the beach..absolutely beautiful. the hotel is in need of some repairs but nothing major i don't think. the previous owner is in prison and his family is running it into the ground as far as i can see. they only have 1 restaurant open. they no longer do all inclusive but now have meal plans. and if you are a member you have to go to members bar and get drinks all day..they say its open from 8-4 but really only has alcohol from 12-4. after that all drinks have to be charged to room or go across street and purchase your own. The staff is outstanding. Diana is wonderful, and so was Juan. They just have their hands tied because the family will not let them do their job to their potential and its sad. I feel they are just holding on until someone can buy them out...i hope this doesn't happen. we really love this hotel and would love to keep coming here for many years. I wish them good luck and we are going back down there in February so hopefully things get better..Do not shy away from this place. it is still wonderful. the food was great and the staff second to none.

Room Tip: always ask for ocean side if possible. unless you dont like stairs. we asked for something lower and...
