After reading other TripAdvisor reviews of the Caribe International, I guess our experience there wasn't as bad as some. Had I read the reviews of this hotel before we were "switched" to it by the Best Western in Cancun, we definitely would not have stayed there. The staff there actually was friendly, it is just that the place is dirty....except the pool which looked nice. There was also a parking lot and wi-fi access. It was our room and the general dirtiness of the hotel that was the problem.
We travelled around the Yucatan by rental car for 16 days. Our final night was to be in Cancun and we had a paid reservation made online thru Expedia at the Best Western Plaza Kokai. Our room cost $71.44 which supposedly was about a 50% discount from the rack rate. We arrived at that hotel by 3PM and were told "our room" had a broken A/C. I asked for another room but was told that all the other rooms were being "worked on". However, they had already arranged for a room for us at the Caribe International, just 4 blocks away. I asked if i was as nice a hotel as the Best Western and was assured it was a very nice big hotel. We drove to that hotel and although he exterior looked fine, I was not impressed by the lobby. We were tired of driving so we checked in. What a mistake!
At the Caribe International the elevator missed the floor level by about 3 inches every time. The A/C in our room was a window unit with the control knobs missing, so it was either on or off and controlled by a circuit breaker on the wall. The toilet tank lid was replaced with a piece of wood. The floor was DIRTY. The paint was peeling off the old furniture. There was a stain on the curtains which after examination turned out to be a large roach or similar black insect crushed into the fabric. There was a piece of chewing gum stuck to the wall next to the bed. Definitely this place wasn't very clean. I checked for bedbugs and was glad not to find any evidence of them. The staff seemed friendly and did give us good directions on how to get to the location we had rented our car from. A continental breakfast was included in the price for the Best Western and the Caribe International (after a phone call) agreed to honor that as well. However, when taking our suitcases to the car before checking out I noticed something disgusting in the lobby. Right next to the elevator and perhaps 15 feet from the reception desk there was a metal ash tray stand with sand in the top. Apparently the night before, someone had vomitted into the sand of the ash tray. The vomit had run down the metal side of the ash tray and was on the floor, and had dried on the carpet. This was in plain view of the reception desk and obviously had been there for hours and was not cleaned up. After seeing that we definitely skipped the included breakfast.
I have contacted Expedia about the "switch" the Best Western pulled on us. I also contacted Best Western headquarters and received an apology from corporte as well as from the manager of the hotel in Cancun. I suspected that because there was a UN conference on climate change in Cancun while we were there, that the local Best Western had simply sold "our room" to someone attending the convention for a higher price and the excuse about the broken A/C was simply a lie. The manger of the Best Western in Cancun assured me that was not the case and that the A/C in "our room" really was broken. How could it be "our room " if we hadn't checked in yet? He also offered me a 40% discount off the regular room rate if we ever wanted to stay in that hotel again. FAT CHANCE we'll be doing that! Besides, the Expedia rate was supposed to be 50% off the regular rack rate. The room wasn't worth $25 much less the $71.44 we paid Expedia. It was jut one night out of our lives, so no big deal. However, I feel that the Best Western Plaza Kokai in Cancun pulled a "switcheroo" on us. I also wanted to advise everyone against staying at the Caribe International in Cancun, unless you enjoy filthy conditions. We love Mexico and had a great trip. However that night , and the experience we had dealing with those 2 hotels, was sure an unpleasant way to end our vacation.
