“Worst hotel I've ever stayed at and I travel quite often!!!!!!”

I travelled to Cancun with my best friend and my parents! My parents are quite the travellers and being in a family that loves and enjoys the art and hobbie of travelling, I too have come accustomed to seeing the world!

About six years ago, I stayed at an all-inclusive hotel in Cancun and my group and I loved every day of our stay!! We enjoyed ourselves fully and I wanted to experience the Mexican culture again! :-)

We found this trip on TNT Vacations - online; spent just under $900 per person for our airfare from Boston to Cancun (roundtrip) and a seven night stay at the Aquamarina Beach Hotel! Not too bad, we thought!

One thing after another ...lead to a miserable memory of this Cancun trip. :-(

We checked in on Wednesday, early evening ... my best friend and I in one room, my parents in another room. As soon as I got to our room, after being on such a long flight, I had to use the bathroom! Toilet worked well, flushed, moved along to wash my hands, and realized we had no hot water. I found this kind of odd, so I continued to twist the water knobs, nope, we had no hot water. :-(

My best friend went to the desk to make the hotel aware that we had no hot water. The hotel told him that the hotel was indeed booked and there were no rooms available, except for one suite. The hotel told us that this room was only available for one night and we needed to pay $17 to use it. I know $17 isn't a lot, but we just paid $900 p/p for the trip, now our room doesn't have hot water in our room, and we need to pay extra money in order to sleep "somewhere" for the night? Didn't make sense, but it was too late to argue ...we just wanted to relax and get a good nights sleep after our flights.

The next morning, they encourage us to check-out of the suite at the original check-out time (12 noon). We head to the desk to check-out and check-in to another room. They checked us out of the suite, but told us we couldn't get into our other room until check-in time (which is 4pm). So for 4 hours, we had no room to use the bathroom, take a shower, take a nap, ...just relax!! :-( It was a blessing that we travelled with my parents, because we got to store our luggage in their room and squeeze our important items into their safe. But, the hotel shouldn't have allowed us to check-out if they did not have a place for us to stay! Two thumbs down for such an awful thing to do to their customers.

We do finally move into our new room, and things went fine until our AC broke! It being 87 degrees farenhite all week, having an air condioner was a necessity!! My best friend headed on down to the desk again to complain of our problem. The maintence man showed up and checked it out; he told us he'd be right back. Not even 20 minutes later, we got a call from the desk stating that the maintence man could not fix our AC and would fix it the following day. We requested a fan for the remainder of the evening, which they did fulfill our request.

The following day we came back to the hotel from a day at the mall, and the desk asked to speak with us. They told us that the maintence man could not fix our AC, the part that the AC needs is very rare to get. They insisted that we switch rooms YET again!!

From having no hot water the first night, to paying for a room because they had no rooms available, to switching rooms, to the AC breaking, to them wanting us to switch rooms AGAIN. We didn't want to switch, we declined.

We spent too much of our vacation at the desk, on the phone with the desk, talking with maintence men, moving our belongings from room to room ...we weren't spending our vacation how we wanted to spend our time in Cancun. :-( And, the hotel desk staff and the hotel manager could not understand that.

We asked for something in return, due to our un-happiness and our time wasted on the run-down rooms they offer their customers, they said no. We spoke with the manager, whom is not personable at all, and he said no. We finally asked to speak with the general manager, and we got his name and number, and we're advised to call him on Monday. We left the desk, very unhappy and dissatisfied!

We got to our room, and called our representative from TNT vacations. We spoke our problems to him and he in return called the hotel, and got us some compensation.

From that point on, our view of the hotel completely changed. We were so disgusted by the hotel lobby staff. We were very unhappy with the manager and his inability to speak with customers and satisfy his customers.

This hotel caters to Mexican people and foods. They have one menu per night. If you don't like Mexican food, don't choose this all-inclusive hotel. It is not for you!! They offer the same menu items daily. They have one restaurant open at a time; no choices! :-(

Our phone was off for 1.5 days. When we went and asked what was going on with the phones, they said the entire hotel is experiencing these problems. We went a whole night without a phone ...sooooo, very, UNSAFE!!!!!!!!

One of our evenings there, we lost power for about 20 minutes because we had 3 different lights on at the same time.

I was craving vanilla wafers one day, and my best friend headed down to the mini-mart inside the hotel to see if they sold them. They did!! :-) He bought the pack, brought them up to me, I took a bite and it was sooooo stale. I threw the whole package away once I read the 2010 expiration date. Totally disgusting!!

The hotels webpage says this hotel has tennis courts, where? Paddleboats, where? Jogging path, where? A marina, where? Beauty palor, where? A lagoon with a jacuzzi, where? Walking distance to the mall and nightlife, that is a lie!!

Entertainment was the biggest joke! Bingo is NOT entertainment; bingo is an activity. Having 2 card tables is NOT entertainment, playing cards is an activity! This hotel had absolutely no entertainment at all. Yuck!

The beach is indeed calm, just like a lake ...but we couldn't swim in the "private beach" because the beach was infested with jelly fish. And even if the beach had no jelly fish, you still cant swim in the ocean in the "private beach" because the swimming area is the same area as the jetskis are rented out at and driven at. Poor judgement!! :-/

This hotel was a complete JOKE! I do not recommend this hotel to any of you!! And I feel like I have grounds to say this because I have stayed in Cancun before, at an all-inclusive ...and I have that hotel to compare to.

Aquamarina Beach Hotel .... you need a serious face-lift!!!

“Don't bother”

We ended up here for 2 nights because our hotel had some air conditioning problems with a few rooms. I would consider this to be maybe half a step up from motel accommodations. It was 16 km from our original hotel. When we finally got there we stood in line to be waited on. Some guy came in & brought a couple to the front desk & they were waited on first (they were hispanic). The guy comes back again with another couple (also hispanic) & they start to wait on them before us. So we're like "hello?! we've been waiting here". They said "Oh, we didn't know." Whenever we asked the people at the front desk questions they acted like they didn't speak english except for one lady. There were bugs crawling around the sink. It took forever for the water to warm up. The room appears to be built for tiny people. All of the light switches were at hip level & you couldn't bend over anywhere without hitting a wall. The only food options are buffet, the pool bar (which has 5 items - either grilled or fried), or room service. Our room didn't have a room service menu, & we had to ask 5 different times before they actually brought one. The just opened a Playboy Casino next door & are still building it. We heard the music thumping in our room all through the night, & during the daytime you get the noise from the construction.

“Basic accommodation with 4 star rating cleanliness and friendliness”

Would return to this hotel again with family. Very friendly ,very clean and staff are a credit to this hotel. Thanks to Nina at reception, Wayne our Thomas Cook rep, refreshingly honest and efficient, Jose Luis a brilliant barman and the extremely hard working entertainment crew, Carlos, Joseph, Betza and Chico, where they get their energy from I cannot imagine, well done Beach was very nice but you can find better further down by the Hilton Hotel. Bus service is excellent locally and the bus station serving the surrounding cities is also very good and cheap. Food is what you would expect for this standard of hotel which is very popular with Mexican families mainly at weekends.
This hotel is being modernised block by block and should give a better standard of accommodation when completed, but I hope it keeps the same atmosphere. We had a very enjoyable holiday.

“we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the aqua marina, and are thinking of going back there this year.”

we stayed at the aquamarina beach last year for 14 nights and had a great time, the mexican people are so kind and freindly ,and more so eagre to please even the most difficult of visiters during their stay at the all inclusive hotel, the food was excellent as you had so much to choose from, and the service was outstanding from the restaurants to the cleaning of the apartments as our room was cleaned on a daily basis, we are now considering going back there this year and would recommend the aqumarina beach to anyone interested in holidaying in mexico.

“Great Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2011

Had a fantastic two weeks at this hotel although it is geared more for the Mexican holiday makers. We were made to feel really welcome on the whole and joined in as many activities as we could. Food was lovely and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, in fact all the Mexicans we met around Cancun (we went out on the bus - great fun) were very friendly and nice. Only downside to the holiday was New Years Eve when we were 'frozen out', the entertainment staff definately favoured their own and excluded us from the distribution of hats, blowers etc. However all the English speaking guests joined together and our friend managed to get some for us from some of the other staff. So if you are going for christmas and new year you may want to choose a different hotel. Holiday highlight had to be the 'Captain Hook night', so good we went twice - meal and a pirate show out at sea.
