“Just ok, depending on your holiday style. Wouldn't go back unless someone else paid for it.”
Stayed for a week at the Beach Palace in January, 2012 with my fiancee and some friends. Hotel is one on a long strip of hotels, so no property to speak of. Just a highrise, a pool and a beach. Lobby is unimpressive and feels like you've arrived at a conference centre. Cold and nondescript. No authentic Mexican flavour whatsoever anywhere in the hotel, which is too bad. Check in was disappointing, staff at front desk was not warm or welcoming and flatly rejected our inquiries about upgrades to ocean view rooms using our 1500 hotel credits. No explanation of where things were around the hotel, where breakfast would be, etc. Just dismissive and average reception upon arrival. When we went to the mayan, we had a wonderful experience all around with the trip and the staff.
Rooms are true to the photos. The lagoon view rooms all overlook a 4 lane highway (you smell diesel exhaust from your open balcony, not good) and the mechanics/air conditioning units of the buildings surrounding the hotel. On the highest floor you probably escape this issue on the lagoon side but it really is better on the ocean view side.
Food was mediocre. Asian restaurant was by far the worst, substituting smoked salmon for fresh salmon in their sushi (without telling you), and the cooked asian meals all looked like chunky meat from a can. If you're from a city and are used do half decent cheap sushi/thai, avoid the Asian restaurant. Just not worth it.
The Mexican and Italian restaurants are just two halves of one large restaurant where breakfast and lunch are served. Food was ok in both of those but nothing special.
we used our credits for spa services and those were good, we enjoyed that.
The main pool overlooking the beach is ok but is in shade by 4pm as the sun goes over the building. The music at the pool is very annoying, its hard to read a book with dance tunes pumping all day long. Would be great if they could vary it and turn it down. Felt like Spring Break party time all day. I think that's important for people to know, that the pool area has loud music all day long. I assume the rooms close to the pool would suffer from that music too if they wanted to have a nap on their balconies during the daytime.
Beach was very nice, great sand and surf but i can only credit mother nature for that, not the hotel.
In general, the staff was nice. Gabriela at breakfast, making her omlettes was lovely, as was Andres, one of the waiters on breakfast and lunch duty. Great service and they make efforts to remember you, which is nice considering how many faces come through there each week.
Nice to not have to cook. Breakfast and lunch were best. Dinners were a bit disappointing and not something we looked forward to, which you should on a trip like this.
This hotel is fine if you're into partying and noise, subpar food and nothing to do but drink and lay around a loud pool. Beach was nice, away from the noise of the pool and nice view.
If you're looking for more authentic mexican feel with some more space, multiple pools, nice grounds and low buildings without a "crowded" feel, go to the mayan riviera (try el dorado seaside, valentin imperial, etc). For the same money, you can enjoy a much nicer vacation with a less "bargain" or "vegas" feel. I really feel like we overpaid for what we got at the Beach Palace hotel. Had we gone on a last-minute bargain deal, i wouldn't complain but we booked in advance and paid the same as Mayan hotels, so I was really disappointed.
The evening activities were also lacking so we were bored after dinner and didn't want to leave the grounds for something to do. The sports bar was lame, felt like a flourescently lit high school gym from the 80s. not a nice place to hang out at all. The rooftop bar and pool were vacant at night, so felt weird sitting there. It would have been nice to have a place to go to enjoy drinks and see some shows. The shows by the pool were all too windy to enjoy. Too bad there are no movies in the rooms as well, my fiancee complained about that.
So, out of 10 i would give this a 5.
Room Tip: Lagoon view would only be ok on 11th or 12th floors. Otherwise, welcome to rush hour traffic, diesel...
