“Sun Palace is our home away from home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Let me just start out by saying that the Sun Palace has provided my husband and I with one the most memorable trips/week of our lives. To start off with, we were both a little apprehensive to travel to Cancun for our honeymoon. The prices were great, but the rumors floating around about traveling to Mexico were a little unnerving. I am sure you all have heard the warnings “only stay on the resort, don’t use public transportation, be extremely cautious, etc.” After many many MANY hours of going through the multiple reviews/pictures on tripadvisor.com and weighing the pros and cons about going to Mexico and where to stay we took our chances and booked a week long stay at the Sun Palace. We are both so extremely happy that we did.

From the beginning, when we arrived at the airport we had arranged for the travel service (provided through expedia.com) to pick us up and bring us to the resort. While getting through customs took nearly 2 hrs, the actual transportation to the resort was a breeze. We found our contact right away, grabbed a beer while waiting for the rest of the group and then we were off. The bonus of the Sun Palace is that it was the very first stop! As soon as we arrived at the resort we were greeted with cold towels, a flower for me and cold beverages (I could get used to that kind of treatment). *Don’t worry the VIP treatment does not stop there…nor did it stop for the entire week that we were at Sun Palace.

We decided to upgrade our room to the concierge level, using $476 of our resort dollars (we received $1500 total). The room was absolutely beautiful and by upgrading to the concierge level we were able to use the comfy *sofa like* chairs on the beach, which was a definite plus in our eyes. *A side note regarding the room, after reading more reviews when arriving back home I wish I would have requested/been offered one of the rooms with the larger patio. We did not realize that was an option.*

The resort itself was absolutely gorgeous and EXTREMELY clean. I was a little nervous about cleanliness prior to going and I did not even think about it once I stepped foot onto the resort. The maid service came in the morning and at night and our mini fridge/ bar was always fully stocked. *Another side note, if you are a Coors Light girl like myself, you can request to have your fridge stocked with that! (I did not realize this until the last day, which was a fun little surprise).*

The pools at the resort are awesome! Beautiful infinity pools with breath taking views of the ocean. A definite plus is the wait staff that always seems to find you (whether you are on the beach or laying by the pool) and make sure that you have a drink in your hand! :)
The beaches are absolutely beautiful, my husband and I laughed a few times at the effort the Sun Palace makes to keep their beaches clean. There were a few workers that dug holes and buried seaweed all day long. I am not sure if there is another purpose for this, but it did make for some beautifully clean beaches that we appreciated so much!

The nightly entertainment was simple, yet fun. Being an adults only resort the atmosphere is a little more mellow compared to what you might find at other places in Cancun, but there was still nightly games/themes and even a DJ a few nights! The Sun Palace truly provided the rest and relaxation needed, but still included a great time and plenty to do to create many memories!

The food at the resort was great. Anyone that is not able to find something that they like to eat at this resort would be the pickiest person in the world. There is steak, chicken, seafood, pasta, deserts…the possibilities are endless. Our favorite meals were the Champagne Dinner on the beach (we used $350 of our resort dollars for this), the Wine Dinner on the beach (complimentary with the concierge level rooms) and the dinner we had at the Oriental restaurant! Room service was 24hrs and had great food and quick service. They had someone grilling by the main pool everyday for lunch, and breakfast in The Alamo was full of endless options and great service! My favorite was the café! Everyday since I have been back I wish I had another cup of the wonderful coffee that I had at the Sun Palace :(

We also signed up for the swimming with the Dolphins option (used about $300 resort dollars for this as well). This was a blast and provided great memories for my husband and I, however, we do not have any hard copies of those memories since 3 pictures cost $70 USD. The prices during this excursion were the most outrageous, but it was still a great time!

In regards to traveling around Cancun, the rumors about staying only on the resort are crazy. We took public transportation everywhere (you can’t beat $1 for a bus ride). We felt completely safe traveling around Cancun and we even used the public transportation system a little later at night after visiting the Beach Palace sports bar and felt completely comfortable.

We used our final resort credits at the spa, which was absolutely worth it! We had 2 complimentary massages included since we upgraded to the concierge level, in addition my husband had a 50 minute deep tissue that he loved, I had a 50 minute facial which was so wonderful and I received one of the best pedicures I have ever had….all included! How many resorts can you go to and have all that stuff included in your stay? It was definitely a nice perk!

Finally I would like to end this review by saying that even with everything previously mentioned about our trip, it would not have been nearly as good if it were not for Roger (at the lobby bar/main pool), Jose (at the lobby bar), Estrella and Karina. These wonderful people made us feel like we were part of the Sun Palace family. They went out of their way to provide us the most outstanding service and I can not say enough nice words about them. Roger in particular was absolutely fabulous. He is such a hard worker and does it with a smile on his face. We had the pleasure of learning more about him and his family and we were truly saddened to leave him and the other people mentioned above. On our way home we talked about what made Sun Palace so special and we decided it was the connection that we had with these fine people that said hello every time we entered the room and went out of their way to make this a great honeymoon for us. You don’t make the same connections with the staff when you are staying at a giant resort and it really changes the entire feeling of the trip. Instead of feeling like we were on vacation by ourselves, we felt like we were at home with our friends. Good job Sun Palace for employing wonderful people, I truly hope that they are rewarded for their wonderful work and amazing personalities. It is because of them that we will travel back to the Sun Palace and not “hotel hop” like so many people do. We could not imagine coming to Cancun and not being with our friends from the Sun Palace.

Room Tip: Upgrade to the concierge level, ask for a room with a larger patio!

How can I begin? Thanking you for the wonderfull opinions is not nearly enogh. It does prove that to enjoy a vacation you have to understand you are on vacation. That is, take it easy and let us do the worrying. See the world a little through calm eyes. You excel at this!

Also, I am very greatful for your comments on my country and specifically on Cancun. it is undeniable that there are parts of Mexico that have undergone difficult times. Cancun is not one of them. There has been so much information hype about insecurity in Mexico that it is completely blown out of proportion. As with any one million plus inhabitants city there are places you don't go to and things you don't do. Valid all over the world.

We do have several ongoing programs to single out our best employees. Rest assured those you mention will be included and will be very happy about it.

We will be awaitng your return. Do let us know when you've decided on the dates. Clients like yourselves are very appreciated and dear to our resort.

Thank you again!

We were looking so forward to being at this property, 1st night and we are somewhat disappointed. The send you to the "timeshare sales pitch lady" to "book your credits", but she can't help you with anything but sell you on the timeshare. Then you get to the right person to book your credits, after another half hour, but then "you'll have to come back later, you're not in the system yet". We were told they were overbooked, and we couldn't get an upgrade on the room. The reason we booked this place, and spent a little more money on booking this resort was because of the resort credits, which they make so difficult for you to use. This is our 3rd time at a Palace resort, and we were expecting a little more than we're getting. The service at the restaurants has been good and what we've seen of the food so far has been good. It just shouldn't be so hard to book your credits, they have one person open to help you with this, and two available to help you with booking your timeshare presentations.

Firstly let me apologize. There is nothing that I dislike more than having an issue with a guest albeit because of the points. I gather the services were good.

I do have to go on record by saying that upgrades are subject to availability and February has been a very busy month. Therefore, concierge rooms, of which we have a limited stock are usually taken.

Patrons who want the assurance of a concierge room will reserve and pay the rate difference.

I would love to get a second chance to redeem our standing with you and if you so decide, please let me know personally. I am at your service.

Cordially,

This was our 3rd stay, and we brought along another couple. As always the service was terrific. The massages, beach and pools are great. We played 4 rounds of golf (2 at Moon Palace and 2 at Riviera Cancun) all very pleasant. We decided to have dinner at the Beach Palace (Wok), Cancun Palace (Hibachi dinner), and Moon Palace (Arrecifes - Brazilian) for variety. The staff work very diligently, and certainly add to the sense of being pampered. Only complaints were the lack of enough beach umbrellas (get out to reserve one before 8am!) and the predictability of the buffet meals. Overall a very relaxing and enjoyable vacation. I recommend upgrading to the Concierge Level.

Oh, Lordy, Lordy...I am so sorry not to have gotten a 5 star review from you.

But, you are absolutely right. We were missing umbrellas, beach towels and beach chairs.
And while I am totally aware that guest shouldn't have to put up with this and do apologize I can assure you that today, this has been taken care of.

I grieve for not having been able to satisfy you completely and I look forward to your kind return.

Warmest regards,

“overrated. it's ok only.”

I stayed 5 night at Sun Palace in Oct/ Nov 2011. this hotel has many supporters and I know they are going to protest. However, it doesn't mean SP is not good just didn't meet my expectation.

Food---it was raining the whole time while i was there. Only Alamo was opened provided breakfast, lunch and dinner, buffet style. There is an Italian ala carte restaurant also opened but opened at 6 or 7pm. My wife doesn't like italian, so we only ate once. it's so-so. we did eat at Cancun Palace two night for better options.

Service--- Staff are friendly. Their service showed they are very experienced with long years of working there. it's a flowing procedure. not really enjoy to do.

Drinks--- old plastic cafeteria cup were used. I understand the safety issue so no glass should be used. but change them to newer designs. I stayed at Live Aqua and they use nice, glass like cup for cocktails. This little details tells the truth of quality.

Room--- i love the bathtub in room. and it is very spacious. it shows some wear and tear now. it is in need of some modernization.

Bathroom--- This hotel caters to couples. yes, but i am sure both my wife and myself don't really want to hear the "stone dropping" sound with our privacy in the bathroom. lol... it is quite a funny part for us. We just dealt with it, but Not a Loving part.1/5

Entertainment--- it's ok. typical resort nightly entertainment. it is good to have when we were bored at night after almost a week of same food. we had chance for turtle release one night. that was fun and memorable. 4/5

Pool--- so small. it claims it has 2 pools. the small long one is covered by the shade of building the whole day, only about 10-20 loungers were set up. The small pool is so small that it makes it very uncomfortable to go in while the ppl on loungers are keep staring at the swimmers/ or lovers who wants to be more intimate. The bigger pool is used for volley ball. That part of pool is WiFi dead zone. so we didn't use.

1500 Resort credits--- This is the best part. we used 500 pts for upgrading to Concierge room, 300 for Spa, 860 for Platinum photo session. I heard they are now charging 11% on this 1500 credits. That means now ppl needs to pay USD 165 to use 1500 credits. Some squeezing marketing rule.

Spa--- They have great masseur. we had massage twice together. both with experienced masseur. This is the best part for the whole trip.

Overall, it is a decent AI. Everyone has different expectation and requirement. This is a fine resort but didn't deliver enough in term of Food choice, food and drink quality, big pool, a higher end of modern social environment. This is probably a good choice to someone with more mature age group. just not for us.

We will NOT return in the future.

We do our utmost to please all our customers. Because we know most of our patrons are looking for a respite from Winter, many of our food activities are outside and yes, when it rains our selection is less ample.
I do thank you for making us aware of your particular tastes. We treat every guest individually and try to meet all expectations.

If you are tempted to give us a second chance I would appreciate your letting me know. I am sure Sun Palace can successfully cater to your taste.

With sincere regards,

“Simply Awesome!”

My wife and I stayed Feb 5th through Feb 10th. This was our first all inclusive and our first trip to Cancun. I recommend upgrading to a Concierge Level Room, but do it with your resort credit upon arrival rather than paying up front. The couples massage was great, and we also did the 80min Sacred Hot Stone massage. The staff is very attentive and they have a team of people that get people involved at the pool and for the evening shows. We ate at all of the restaurants except their Thai/Asian place and everything was good. Great selections and all fresh.

There are only two things that we didn't like.
1. They run out of pool and beach towels by 8:30 daily. People take more than they need and this is really the problem. The hotel needs to stock more to compensate for this.
2. Beware of people in name tags that say "Palace Elite"....they tell you they will pay your taxi ride to and from the Moon Palace so you can take part in their 28 year celebration and will give you more spa credit....it's the hook or a time share....we realized it and passed.

You can use some resort credit towards excursions. It's 8.5 pesos to take the bus anywhere. We didn't convert our US cash, so you pay one dollar each way...no big deal.

We went to Wet N Wild to hang out and swim with dolphins. With your ticket to the park, it is also all inclusive for food and drinks. We also went to Aquaworld for the Jungle Tour (boat ride) and snorkeling. Once again, a first and it was awesome!

We will be back!

Thank you for your kind comments.

In all I see you were quite satisfied with your stay and this is whatwe look for.

Indeed we had problems with the laundry, not with the towel stock but this has been corrected.
I do apologize for this situation, though, I know many guests were dissatisfied with this and i don't blame them.

I hope to have your visit again. And this time it will be perfect.
