I recently came back from a wonderful vacation at Dreams with my husband. We stayed June 16th through the 23th. This is our third time visiting Dreams Cancun. The first time we stayed for 2 days on a site visit when we were scoping out wedding destinations (by the way they have a very reasonable rate for site visits, it was around $100 pp a night when we did one). The next year we stayed two weeks for our wedding/honeymoon with 26 guests (for an extensive detailed review for that year see my wedding review on BDW http://www.bestdestinationwedding.com/products/dreams-cancun-resort-spa-luxury-all-inclusive/reviews/6003 And this past visit was for our first year anniversary (another nice amenity Dream's offers is 2 free nights on your Anniversary stay if you get married at their resorts). Every time we have stayed there we have had a great time and dream about the next time we'll see our second home and family again. Our wedding guests enjoyed themselves; even our stateside photographers had been there before with a previous wedding couple and had wonderful things to say about this resort.
Let me just start by saying that I do not believe this is a five star resort, so I'm sure there are things that many well-traveled people might expect, but not get here. The property is not new, some rooms have their quirks, and yes sometimes things go wrong. I want my review to be completely honest, therefore I will not hold back any negative experiences I have had, but please keep reading, because there are very few and far more positive things. There's a reason we keep coming back and chose this place to host our family and friends for the most important day of our new life together.
Like I said, some things went wrong. We had an AC problem. I think it broke a week before we came. It was fixed just before we arrived, but then broke again our first night. I think the first time it was an entire system failure and people we talked to said their rooms were in the high 80's, but this second time it was just a certain piece that went bad and our room was in the mid to high 70's (not unbearable, but uncomfortable, especially at night). However, we were given a fan that really made a difference until the next day, where we were told the problem would be fixed (they shipped the piece overnight from another country to get the problem fixed ASAP). The next morning, our temp was still the same, so they let us check out a few other rooms before we moved. We found one not far away and that was reasonably cooler and we kept our fan as well, so the rest of our stay was very comfortable (if maybe a little loud from the fan, but it did not bother us too much, we could still hear the ocean over it!). This was the only major negative experience we have had in three years, and like I said, I think it was handled very well by the Dreams staff. I can't speak for the other reviewers on here, but I personally had no problem when I asked for them to make the situation better for us. We were not made to feel bad for asking, and they also compensated us with a complimentary couples 50 minute massage out on a palapa over the water (this is also our third year of using the spa, and the complimentary service felt the same as the ones we've paid for in the past... awesome and relaxing!). We probably could have even been compensated more (another lady we spoke to received two free nights, and she decided to use them right away and extended her stay with her son), but we were perfectly happy with the massages! The only other minor things I've noticed was during my first stay my straightener didn't work in an outlet (however, my blow dryer did, and my straightener worked the next year when I was in a different room, so not sure why that happened), and last year our honeymoon suite had a few ants (but we remedied the situation by having them promptly remove our room service and nightly petit fours that they give honeymoon couples). So, the very few things that went wrong, we felt were fixed immediately! NOTE: If you are have the package that offers the nightly petit fours (little desserts and appetizer surprises that change nightly, and they leave them when you are gone so if you don't come back for a while they might attract ants) you can ask them to place plastic wrap on top to not attract bugs (you are in the tropics, so there will be some bugs sometimes esp if food is left out), but they didn't understand me when I said plastic wrap. Finally I explained it to where they understood what I meant. They call it film. So, ask for film on top of your food (they usually put it on your drinks in room service anyway, so I'm surprised they don't cover the food).
Now, onto all the good stuff. I said before that this is not a five star resort. But what I did not mention was that each time we vacationed at Cancun, we visited two hotels (one being Dreams) and the other hotel was always a five star hotel. The only benefit I can tell from comparing a five star hotel and Dreams Cancun is that the five star hotels do seem a bit newer. However, Dreams does a good job of maintaining what they have and everything is always very clean.
Food: The food is very good. Seaside Grill, Himitsu, and Oceana are all outside. They all serve chicken, beef, and fish dishes as well as vegetable dishes (so don't be afraid to try them all). Oceana may be mostly limited to fish at lunch time, but at dinner they have a nice filet Mignon and stuffed chicken. I love their grouper! Seaside has a great salmon dish and my husband loves their breaded beef involtini and chocolate strawberry cake roll. There fondue appetizer is nice as well! Himitsu has sushi rolls, Nigiris and Sashimi and other Asian dishes. I like the spicy tuna and the appetizer with the cold rice noodles. Hubby liked mango and beef rolls and chicken spring rolls. Those three restaurants and Paloma Bonita (the indoor Mexican restaurant across from the resort) all offer plated dinners. Try the Oaxaca cheese appetizer with tortilla at Paloma... good enough for a dairy intolerant girl to even dare to try! The World Cafe is buffet and serves the only breakfast (or you can get very good room service breakfast). The chilequiles are very close to the homemade kind that I had on a mission trip to Mexico once (even though I had to pick around the cheese and sour cream this time around, hubby could have it all and said it was great!) Tons of fresh fruit, a smoothie station (they had soy milk for me), omelet and quesadilla station, yogurt, oatmeal (but only if you like it smothered in milk, they don't have regular oatmeal), Mexican hot chocolate, salad bar, eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, waffles, hash browns, pastries, elephant ears, and tons more! They have lunch (which I never really tried) and dinner which also offers theme nights (Italian, French, Seafood, Caribbean, Mexican, and International) but will also offer the creature comforts of home (fries, salad, burgers, dogs) in case you don't want to explore. The tres leches cake is our favorite dessert at Dreams and we even chose it as our wedding cake (and that is saying something as I try to avoid dairy at all costs). NOTE: If you email Dreams' concierge ahead of time, they will try to stock soy milk for you if you are lactose intolerant. You will have to give them your room number before they give it to you because they have a limited supply and can only give it to people who request it. Drinks are very good. Just ask for the brand you want and if it's weak ask for more! Simple as that! They may also start giving you drinks you didn't ask for it you drink too slow... LOL. We also used our coupons and tried their extra wines. The Liberfaumilch and Port was very good! This year they don't offer port by the bottle so you can't use your coupon for it. There aren't a lot of places in Cancun where I liked the wine. In Cancun, resorts were the only places where the wine didn't taste stale and like tar (we tried some on a Maroma dinner cruise and in a local restaurant and it was bad). I was very satisfied with Dream's house wines. You can also get Sake at Himitsu and more cocktail options at Rendezvous (like champagne cocktails and martinis, usually with jazzy music in the background via pianist!) Coco Cafe (the coffee and pastry bar) even let me take a cup of soy to Rendezvous so they could make me a special chocolate martini! Yummy!!!!
Location: This is by the best location on the hotel zone in Cancun. You will not get this much room to roam unless you go to the Rivera Maya part of Cancun (and I think those are too big because you need a golf cart to get from place to place). This resort is not too big or too small. There are two beaches, one is smaller and calmer (a little more crowded), and the other is very large and the water is more wavy. It does take a while to walk to the water on that side, but that is not Dream's fault. The water used to be a lot closer but the government in Cancun had to expand it due to all the hurricanes. That is also the reason for the rock jetty by the gazebo. The pools are small, but you have plenty of ocean to swim in! The lagoon is not really meant for swimming, so I'm not sure why people complain about that. It's just an extension of the dolphin area and I think it adds a nice look to the resort. The ocean is the most beautiful mix of turquoise, aqua, and deep blue. Also, the resort is very close to the night life, but secluded so you don't have to experience it if you don't want to. I also love that there are no wristbands!
Staff: This is one of the main reasons we keep coming back. As I've said before, we've stayed at other resorts in Cancun, all five stars. And yes, there are some great staff members in all of them, but at Dreams, we pretty much loved everyone. They remember you, talk to you like a buddy, keep your drinks filled, try to fix any problems, and keep you smiling with their sunny personalities. You really feel that they enjoy coming to work every day! Nadia, our concierge, has been working with me over the internet for over a year now, helping to make our 1st anniversary amazing. She helped us to have our wedding menu recreated in a romantic dinner on our actual anniversary date and she gave me the recipe to one of my husband's favorite dishes to make him for Valentine’s Day. She has been so friendly and helpful this past year for us. Esteban at the front desk greeted and checked us in this stay and he also checked us in our first time, and remembered us! He was the one to make sure we had a fan and told us to always come to him if we had problems. Louise at Himitsu also remembered us! There was Alfredo, Alberto and Mario at Barracuda (our favorite daytime bar), and Irwing at Rendezvous that were always ready to serve us and take pics with us and keep us in fun conversation! Christian and Jesus at Seaside treated us so well each time we went (it's our favorite place to eat!) and even let us bring in a special bottle of Champagne we bought outside of Dreams for dinner. They even served it to us and kept it chilled! Claudia was my wedding coordinator last year and Cecilia is another one and they both are amazing and an answer to a stressed bride's prayers. Mireya at the Salon will make you look so beautiful. She did my hair and makeup two years in a row. And the spa is very nice (although sometimes something hasn't worked: steam room this year, treatment room showers last year... however that wasn't a big deal for us. Last year we couldn't get our free scrub (you get free services with having a wedding there) because of the showers being down, so they offered us a second massage free! I thought that was better! These three visits, I have had several couples’s massages, head neck and shoulder massages, and a hot stone massage. They were all so relaxing (although make sure to speak up if the stones are too hot, I didn't say anything at first and it started burning, but how is she supposed to know that. Everyone has different tolerances). I had a coffee sculpting wrap and I felt so toned afterwards and I also had a facial. They gave me a scalp massage and even braided my hair during those.. felt so good! The coupons really help reduce the cost of the spa services, so take advantage of them! The work out facility is very small, so make sure to get there early! Adventure photos on site take nice photos! They took some after session wedding photos last year for us and some 1st year anniversary photos this year! I think Antonio took our photos last year. We were late due to the weather this year so I can't remember that photographer's name because we had to do it quick (our fault). Daniel was great to work with last year with the ordering of the album and helped me over the internet even after we returned home. This year we just bought two images (buy one get one free for $15 and you get them on a disc). This staff works their butts off (and make you truly believe they enjoy every minute of it) so please show your gratitude with a tip. I know it says tips are included, but these people really work hard to make your stay great, and they are so grateful when they realize how much you appreciate them!
Misc: There's a swim with the dolphins program on site. We never used it because we love just watching them. But our wedding guests did it last year and loved it. It's a little expensive and cheaper at Wet N Wild, but this is a lot more convenient since you are right on site. There are also different boats and snorkel equipment you can rent for free and a scuba dive shop right on site (I think it's the only one linked to a resort in Cancun but it's extra). There are also tons of free scheduled activities (scuba demos, snorkel tours, yoga, sports, dancing, crafts, and rainy day alternatives such as board games and the entertainment team is very enthusiastic and will cheer up any rainy day). We never did any of the free activities because we had enough to do with eating, drinking, spa and excursions we plan on our own. We do scuba, but not with the one by Dreams (not because we don't want to, but we like staying with the company we were certified at). There's a night disco type sports bar that stays open until 1am (Desires). We go there for the some of the night events (Perfect Match, Dreams Idol) and the Sox/Cubs games. They took so much time and effort to find the Cross-town game for us, Thank you!
One last tip... this resort was not originally a Dreams resort. So it's not exactly like the other resorts. Based on what we noticed from our wedding guests, and what other people have said, the Preferred club isn't the same here as in other Dreams. At other Dreams, the preferred club is a nicer room, and has exclusive amenities. I'm sure the rooms are nice, but in my honest opinion (and I have seen almost all their room types in person), unless you need more space, the pyramid rooms are the best! I personally love the Ocean Front rooms, and our friends loved the dolphin room! And the Preferred amenities at Dreams aren't as exclusive as you'd think. I have never booked a preferred room and have been at their bar, swam in their pool, sat on their terrace, and eaten their pastries and no one has stopped me. It's not like you are locked out, it's all open at this Dreams. Not that I would care if it were the other way around, I don't mind sharing! But I do see why people are upset at paying all this extra money and not really getting much extra than anyone else.
All in all, these past few years have been some of the best vacations in my life. All-inclusive, tons to do, friendly staff, and amazing location! We will definitely be back. But, next year we may try Secrets so we can see what the Adult Only experience is like! That’s the only thing I really can't review about at Dreams... I have no idea what the kid services are like other than the food (they have great kiddie selections!) And we don't plan on it for a long while :-) Also, some of our favorite staff might be moving to Secrets The Vine, so we might try there! But we will definitely try to come back to Dreams Cancun soon, especially if we have kids!
Thank you so much Dreams Cancun!
Don't pay extra for the Preferred Club. Some of the best rooms are in the Pyramid! We love the...
