“Beyond Excellent Hotel & Service BUT beware of the horribly uncomfortable beds and prearrange taxi service from airport”

Was at this hotel for a mother/daughter/sister trip in December! Have been to Cancun several times before, but not to the Ritz Carlton. From the moment you arrive to this hotel they treat you as if you are at a 5 star hotel. There is not one service that we could offer a negative. The staff, management, housekeeping, room service, pool waiters and staff go above and beyond! They not only give you superb service, but are also extremely pleasant. One of the best Ritz that I've stayed at for service, beautiful, and pleasant. Whoever manages this hotel does an INCREDIBLE job training and managing their staff!!!

This hotel is worth EVERY penny you pay EXCEPT for the beds. It may seem ridiculous to complain about the beds, however my family has stayed in numerous five star hotels (Ritz St. Thomas to the Waldorf in NYC) and also lower tier hotels while traveling back east such as Hampton Inn and have never had such an uncomfortable bed. By the time our trip ended I couldn't wait to leave because my back was aching so bad. My other family members had the same experience. And, I am still having back issues (and I'm young). I'm not certain if some rooms may offer newer beds or different type of beds. If you are facing the hotel we were staying on the far left building, 5th floor, about 7 in from the beach if that helps.

Back to the good stuff. The rooms are beautiful, and spacious. The bathrooms are gorgeous, and the housekeeping staff always replenishes enough towels, and toiletries.

The hot tubs are a little more then lukewarm. They could use to be a tad hotter. With the wind people were freezing when they got out. A bit uncomfortable. Try to secure pool chairs along the front side of the pool (closest to the beach) as the shade covers quite a bit later in the afternoon.

The food at the hotel was beyond delicious. With one of our meals we had one small issue and the management rectified it immediately by crediting our bill. Quite generous of them!
There is a very nice restaurant across the street and to the left of the hotel.....incredible, delicious and would highly recommend (they give you a large cotton candy at the end of the meal on this fun large stick). There is also another one down the street to the left (you pass it on your way from the airport to the hotel on your left hand side)....it was incredible, delicious. You just need to beware of the wait staff who try to "sell" you the expensive wine, dishes, after dinner drinks etc. We walked to the first and taxi to the second restaurant. We also

The front desk staff was very helpful, and friendly. I would suggest changing $$ at the hotel NOT the airport or any other place. However, you can use US $ at most places, however you get more bang for your buck (especially with the taxi drivers) if you change over to Pesos.

Separate from the hotel, I would suggest to arrange taxi service before arriving into Cancun. After you get your luggage, you are directed to a long area of desks. You ask about Taxi service, and they tell you the taxi are quick, and you give them your credit card. they then give you a slip of paper that you then take outside (find the color of your shuttle) and proceed to wait, and wait and wait. After waiting they then drove us to the other side of the hotel (short distance) and we had to then get into another shuttle van to our hotel. It is well worth the extra $ to have someone waiting for you at the airport. We took a taxi back to the airport and it was much less expensive then the price they gave us at the airport for a private taxi.

“elegant!”

This hotel was very nice with old world elegance. I felt like I was in a RItz in Chicago or New York but when you walked out the back of the hotel there was a beautiful ocean.
The rooms were not as nice as the lobby and public areas but we had a great rate so pehaps we had the last pick.
Food was also fancy and very good but lost the feeling of Mexico.
I recommend this for someone who wants the beach and wants luxury. This hotel is great but it could be in any warm climate because you wont experience Mexico.
Spa was amazing! Great to shower when my kids and I wanted to use our hotel bathroom at the same time.

“Meh”

We were in the Cancun/ Rivera Maya area for seven nights and decided to spend the last two nights at the Ritz-Carlton. The reason we chose RC was because we'd had dinner there on previous visits to Cancun and were so impressed with the meals that we decided to spend time there to check out the whole RC Cancun experience. We'd come back for dinner in a heartbeat but would NOT stay there again.

We've stayed at other RC properties and had GREAT experiences. This hotel just doesn't live up to the standards of the others we've visited. We remarked to each other that if this had been our first RC experience we'd not seek any of their others.

Our room was on the 7th floor and the balcony was in the corner where the building curves. Normally we love to have a pre-dinner drink on the balcony but did not because we had neighbors that we could have had a conversation with as there was no privacy.

The room just had all sorts of things that I don't expect at a five star hotel; snags in the carpet, stain on lampshade, balcony doors that didn't work properly, chipped paint, warped photo in bathroom. Our bathroom really just needed to be re-done.

The hotel's website has a photo of the beach and pool area. That photo is missing about 200 chairs around the beach and another 150 around the pools. This is a mega hotel, not some intimate getaway. That said, we rented a beach casita for a day for $150 (tax & tip $200)

As far as the breakfast buffet, very average. Made to order omelets were the highlight. Can't get that at every hotel...oh wait, you CAN? I expect more from a RC.

The previous three 5 star hotels that we stayed at had servers bring complimentary water in ice buckets throughout the day- RC $8 small water no bucket. They also brought complimentary little snacks (mini-margarita, gourmet popsicles, fruit water) at the pool and in the room-RC nada. The room has a Nespresso coffee maker (love them) and housekeeping leaves one regular and one decaf. There is clearly an indent on the tray to leave four and we requested more to no avail. It's the details that make the difference and this hotel clearly missed the mark on detail.

What we'd come back for;

The food and service at Fantino's was world class.

We'd highly recommend the tequila tasting, Samantha does a fantastic job, she'd got an amazing wealth of tequila knowledge.

“I am probably the only one who cares about...........”

As a client relations professional in the service industry I tend to a bit quirky about what I care about. Restrictions like closing the pool or limiting the access to the fitness center annoy me more than a hair in my soup. Fortunately the Ritz has no restrictions; their palatial resort is yours for the time you are there. Taking a swim with the sun coming up in their endless pool was a must all four days I was there. The room/balcony had that same magical view. The room service was extraordinary- order the chowder before anything else!

“They Treat You Like a King!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

I have read the other reviews and here's the thing to consider. If you want 5 star luxury, food and service, stay here. If you want kids activities and a noisy party atmosphere, stay at the other luxury hotels on the strip. I have stayed at almost every hotel worth staying at in Cancun. I was so glad to see the Ritz come years ago because I was tired of and had outgrown the pool games (both adult and for children), and I had learned to appreciate the value of the staff knowing my name and my preferences and I also appreciated the amazing cuisine at the Ritz Carlton.

The Club Level at the Ritz Carlton is probably one of the best in the chain. They have an expansive Club Lounge, the food services are amazing, and the price is fantastic especially for what you receive. After just the first day, even housekeeping called us by name.

We took advantage of their cooking classes which are held in their top notch teaching facility. I actually came down with the flu while there, and after they had made me the most fantastic chicken soup for two days, the chef found me by the pool on the third day trying to get some much need vitamin D in the sun. He asked me what I could now eat and I thanked him but said that nothing seemed to sound good. He came back about 30 minutes later with a lovely sandwich and it actually hit the spot. Can you name another hotel where the staff works that hard to share guest information amongst themselves to that degree so that they can help their guests? I can't and I've stayed at the best properties all over the world.

So I would highly recommend this property. And if it is a special occasion, ask the Concierge to arrange dinner on the beach. I promise you will never forget it!

Room Tip: I would stay on the Club Level and ask for a corner room. The views are the best and they are more...
