“Do NOT stay here!”

The place we got directed to which was 'Hostal Marpez' according to the address was a chained shut property with overgrown shubbery all over it. We could get in because it was locked and all the lights were off. after 10 minutes of calling 'Ola!' we eventually were met by the owner who spoke no English. he took us up to the kitchen lounge area and left us waiting in the dark fro 10 minutes before coming straight back up and asking for money. The whole place seemed really creepy and we left asap. Atmosphere was terrible and we weren't convinced anyone else was staying there!

“Location and Nothing Else”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2011

I didn't really get the "hostel" feeling from this place and I was so hoping to have it as a solo traveller. It's easy to get to from the airport (catch the shuttle to ADO bus terminal) and the area's lively. The breakfast shouldn't even be advertised or the jacuzzi. Breakfast was white bread (hello heart attack), jam and coffee. There's a sign that states only two slices per person. lol If you wanted to use the jacuzzi, it would've taken an hour to turn on and clear all the dust inside of it.

The owner seemed miffed because I asked to see the dorm room before giving any cash. The staff didn't seem happy to work there or the owner which was a bummer. Okay if you're NOT a solo traveller and not expecting a hostel vibe. More like a seedy hotel. This review's a little late, but I decided to see if this hostel was listed. I went on to Tulum and had a much better time.

FYI...You could feel the springs through the mattress, so bring a sleeping bag.

“We loved the place and atmosphere”

We came here last month and stayed one week with my friends and met a lot of cool people in this place. Lots of backpapers from over the world !
There's a jaccuzzi, two terraces where you can drink, eat and party, a fully equipped kitchen and two fridges to store and cook your own food ! Rooms and showers are clean ! Staff is really nice and helpful !
It's located in a safe place, 2 minutes from a supermarket, 2 minutes from the direct urban bus R1 to the beaches, 1 minutes from quesadillas and tacos stands !

We didn't tried the big hotels here, but this is certainly one the best choice (price/quality/services) for a lowbudget holidays in this area !

“Don't believe what you see!!!! A depressing place.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 February 2010

Air-conditioning is only available between certain hours. The "jacuzzi spa" consisted of an empty and covered jacuzzi that is filled with dust. Miguel mentioned that he would need 2 days notice in order to clean it. There is only one hammock to use which is on its last leg. The other hammock was covered with a black garbage bag. You can feel the springs in the beds digging into you.

The breakfast should not even be mentioned. It consisted of stale white bread, coffee, peanut butter and jam. You can only have two slices of white bread. The kitchen table had little ants on it. I also ran into a cockroach in the storage area.

Miguel will not watch your laptop. I know this because I overheard a conversation between Miguel and one of the Danish girls that was staying there. Miguel said he couldn't be held responsible for the laptop. His ad mentions that he will watch it.

This is not a hostel. It is a hotel. I met 4 people that decided to leave after one night there because it was so depressing. Miguel (the owner) confided in me that he doesn't like running the place and wanted my help in bringing in customers. The lights in the rooms are so low that you can hardly see yourself in the mirror at night. I was almost prompted to buy a lamp.

On a positive note, I discovered the Pocna Hostel on Isla Mujeres and the ladies there were very nice. One of them even knew Miguel and sympathized with me. I ended up leaving Hostel Marpez on 2/21 and spent the remainder of my stay at the Pocna.

Nothing. This place was so depressing. Miguel (the owner) came into my room without knocking to discuss giving me a job to help bring in customers. lol I didn't come to Cancun for this. I sincerely hope that HostelBookers will investigate this property (without notice).
I discovered a nicer a hostel called Pocna in Isla Mujeres and decided to spend the rest of my vacation there.

I have never had problems getting my money back for unused days, but Miguel insisted on not giving me my money back. He argued that he reserved two rooms for me and turned people away. It was only around $90 which is nothing to me, but I was offended that he refused on the basis that he saved rooms for me. No one was staying there when I arrived and only two people were staying there when I left. I only booked a single room and didn't ask for two large empty rooms to myself. The whole point of staying in a hostel is to meet people.

I advise anyone even considering staying here to ask about their cancellation policy and to look at the room before paying upfront. I will never recommend this property to anyone. I should've staying at the Soberinus which was a little better.
