We had a last minute itinerary change that included me going to Veracruz with my wife, so I searched trip advisor and came up with the Concha Dorada for a quick, cheap find.
The hotel is old and dingy, but the rooms were clean, no bugs were seen and we only needed it for 2 nights, so we took it. The price was amazing, 700 pesos for both nights! thats like 57 USD for 2 nights. We were lucky in that the weather was very cool, almost cold while we were there so we just got a room with a fan instead of A/C. It was very basic, but clean and functional. We weren't going to be spending any time in the hotel anyway, so it was fine.
We read that we should get a room in the back of the building to avoid the street noise, so we did. Unfortunately it was next to the stairs, which everyone had to use because the elevator was out of order. So it turned out to be extremely noisy anyway, and made sleeping difficult.
Overall, not a bad place. Cheap and well located, although if I go back to Veracruz I will get a hotel on the Malecon or in the swanky Boca del Rio next time rather than in the zocalo.
