“Nice place. Poor, poor service.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2010

The shame about this place is that the rooms and the building are actually pretty but it is totally let down by the staff who were disinterested from the moment we arrived till the moment we left in terms of making sure our stay was a comfortable and pleasant as possible. Quite honestly it felt like they were going out of their way just to be there and help with the simplest of inquiries and tasks. Laundry? They nearly lost items and almost couldn't be bothered tracking them down for us. Shoddy. If you can find somewhere else I would suggest you do.

“No heat at night, room a bit spartan.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2010

It can be quite cold at night in San Cristobal during the winter but this place does not supply any heating - we kept the bathroom door closed as there was a slatted window that did not close. The furnishings were very plain and we had to ask for more hangers.
The tv did not work and was not fixed during our stay(although we didn't need it). There was no safe. Breakfast was all right - we could get fried eggs. If traveling on our own, we wouldn't choose this place.

“Unfriendly and unhelpfull staff”

First of all, we didn't spent a night in the posada jovel.
I've made a reservation three months in advance and they told me that I had to sent my creditcarddata by mail, to which I reacted that I would contact them again when I arrived in Mexico, because I rather won't send these data through the internet. They didn't react to this message
I contacted them when I was in Mexico, but they didn't respond.

Arriving at the hotel, around 9 pm, they just said " we're full" " you should have paid in advance" . That's it...
This might also have been my fault, but they just stand there and didn't say anything else or tried to help to find a solution.

“We left after one nightmare night and would not stay here again!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2009

I am always cynical of people who leave bad reviews and would rather say nothing if I have nothing good to say but the night here was a nightmare.

We booked to stay here after reading good reviews in The Lonely Planet guide. There are two sides to the hotel one opposite sides of the street, one being more luxurious than the other.

We arrived in San Cristobal on a Thursday stayed elsewhere for one night and we wanted to stay here from Friday for 4 nights. We were shown a room on Thursday night which we reserved but they only had rooms on the plusher side for the Friday and Monday nights, being fully booked for the weekend. No problem, we paid for those two nights and agreed to stay on the other side for the weekend.

San Cristobal gets very cold at night due to the altitude, so hot water is essential as most rooms in the town do not have any heating. The room we were promised on the Thursday was not the room we were given on the Friday when we checked in. The room was considerably smaller and colder due to having very small windows which were in the shade.

After some discussion with the very unhelpful and unfriendly staff we eventually got given another room. Tthe room was nice, the water was very hot and although the toilet kept blocking we were happy enough.

That night at about midnight a group of Mexican teenagers staying at the hotel started having a party. Friday night, we didn't want to spoil the fun so let it go. At 2.00 the noise was so loud there was no chance of sleep as they were all outside the rooms shouting to each other etc.

My partner went to reception and asked them to have a quiet word as it was very late. The man on reception did go to speak to them but nothing changed. At 2.30 I rang reception and asked again but still no change. Eventually another guest opened the door and got very irrate at the group and this seemed to do the trick. It was a shame the hotel didn't sort the problem though and it was left to another guest.

The next morning we complained to reception and they said they had received a lot of complaints and had asked the group to leave. Fair enough, these things happen so we moved over to the other builidng.

The room was freezing so I decided to have a shower to warm up, one problem, this building does not have hot water, it is luke warm at best. We were promised that it was hot but it is definitely not.

I spoke to reception and asked if there was anything they could do but they were so unhelpful and unfriendly we simply decided to cancel the rest of our stay and moved to another hotel.

The more upmarket side of the hotel is pretty, the rooms are nicely decorated and there is a nice sun terrace but all of this does not justify the attitude of the staff and there are much better hotels in San Cristobal within the same price range.

I would not recommend this hotel.

“Lovely hotel but the rooms are a bit cold”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 April 2009

The staff is charming, the location is decent and the rooms are clean. If you're a couple you might wanna consider taking a room with a bigger bed. The standard double room has a pretty small bed. This a usually the case in the hotels in Mexico but this bed was realy small in our opinion.
You'll get a discount if you stay several nights. From san cristobal its easy to reach the canon del sumidero and thats really worth it! Stunning views en we saw three crocodiles :)
