I am always cynical of people who leave bad reviews and would rather say nothing if I have nothing good to say but the night here was a nightmare.
We booked to stay here after reading good reviews in The Lonely Planet guide. There are two sides to the hotel one opposite sides of the street, one being more luxurious than the other.
We arrived in San Cristobal on a Thursday stayed elsewhere for one night and we wanted to stay here from Friday for 4 nights. We were shown a room on Thursday night which we reserved but they only had rooms on the plusher side for the Friday and Monday nights, being fully booked for the weekend. No problem, we paid for those two nights and agreed to stay on the other side for the weekend.
San Cristobal gets very cold at night due to the altitude, so hot water is essential as most rooms in the town do not have any heating. The room we were promised on the Thursday was not the room we were given on the Friday when we checked in. The room was considerably smaller and colder due to having very small windows which were in the shade.
After some discussion with the very unhelpful and unfriendly staff we eventually got given another room. Tthe room was nice, the water was very hot and although the toilet kept blocking we were happy enough.
That night at about midnight a group of Mexican teenagers staying at the hotel started having a party. Friday night, we didn't want to spoil the fun so let it go. At 2.00 the noise was so loud there was no chance of sleep as they were all outside the rooms shouting to each other etc.
My partner went to reception and asked them to have a quiet word as it was very late. The man on reception did go to speak to them but nothing changed. At 2.30 I rang reception and asked again but still no change. Eventually another guest opened the door and got very irrate at the group and this seemed to do the trick. It was a shame the hotel didn't sort the problem though and it was left to another guest.
The next morning we complained to reception and they said they had received a lot of complaints and had asked the group to leave. Fair enough, these things happen so we moved over to the other builidng.
The room was freezing so I decided to have a shower to warm up, one problem, this building does not have hot water, it is luke warm at best. We were promised that it was hot but it is definitely not.
I spoke to reception and asked if there was anything they could do but they were so unhelpful and unfriendly we simply decided to cancel the rest of our stay and moved to another hotel.
The more upmarket side of the hotel is pretty, the rooms are nicely decorated and there is a nice sun terrace but all of this does not justify the attitude of the staff and there are much better hotels in San Cristobal within the same price range.
I would not recommend this hotel.
