My mom and I spent a week together in Oaxaca City in early July 2006. I searched Trip Advisor and hotel websites for over 10 hours looking for the right hotel for us, and finally decided on the Hotel Casa Antigua. We were so happy with out decision! The hotel was spotless and beautiful. The 14 rooms were large and modern with full ammenities (including a safe), but simple in their design and aesthetic. We particularly enjoyed our complimentary breakfast of fresh fruit, yogurt, eggs, and beans (there are other options too). We took advantage of the free wireless; we could upload pictures and e-mail daily from my laptop. The staff helped us a lot with planning our excursions and with dinner reservations, but I know that my Spanish helped. It helps to have an idea of what you want to do or where you want to eat, then the staff can make arrangements. Three of the four desk-staff were excellent, the fourth made a few mistakes but was courteous nonetheless, and the manager helped us solve our problem.
The hotel was in a perfect very central location, two blocks from the Santo Domingo church and 3-4 blocks from the Zocalo. While the Zocalo may be the "center" of town, between the 2-month teacher strike and the general bustle of street vendors in the Zocalo, we prefered to walk around the Santo Domingo in the evening.
In the main courtyard, there is a beautiful mural and a pond with small fountains to help with the city noise (you can't find a room that's totally noise free at any hotel in the center of town beause the buildings are old and many of the doors and wondows are slatted for airflow). The hotel is a popular spot for local business people to eat breakfast and lunch (low-key and professional, not noisy), and there is a bar with a big sceen tv for important sport-games (like the World Cup, which we watched there).
I stayed at the less-expensive Hotel Las Mariposas for the following week after my mom left, which I liked a lot as well, but Hotel Casa Antigua was worth the money for the full-service experience there (and half the price still of the Camino Real, which is also beautiful and professional and onlt one block away).
For recommendations on excellent food, Casa Oaxaca near the Santo Domingo was the best. We also liked Las Danzantes. Las Olas was overrated in quality (though I liked their tortilla soup) and had terrible service. We enjoyed the pizza restauraunt near the Santo Domingo too (and up that side street on the left is the best bakery in town--beware everything opens at 9:30 AM). Also, visit the Organic Market on Friday and Saturday at the aqueduct in the late morning...best mezcal, organic coffee and "street" food that's fresh and you're not afraid to eat.
My friends were in the Becari Language School and loved it.
