“Excellent hotel in Centro Historico”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2011

This hotel is located right in the historical centre of Mexico City - just one block from the Zocalo and Madero street. It's also at a walking distance of the Alameda, Palacio de Bellas Artes, Templo Mayor, thus ideal to visit the major monuments in the centro historico. There's an underground station nearby which is useful to visit other parts of the city.

I stayed four nights in this hotel, one night in room 115, the other three nights in room 301. I asked to change rooms after the first night because the room (115) was next to the street and was quite noisy. There's not that much traffic passing through the street, but I had the impression there were many trucks and especially cabs unnecessarily honking their horns. Just like a few other people wrote in their reviews I also heard the noise of continuously running water. The other room (301) was facing the elevator and I expected it to be a little noisy as well but it was very quiet.

The beds are NH standard which means good quality. NH also stands for clean and spacious rooms, friendly staff, expensive breakfasts (room-service only)... there's a Starbucks next door, so no need to order breakfast! For those needing a more solid breakfast I'd suggest to go to Café Tacuba (in Tacuba street). In my opinion the best place in Mexico City for breakfast!

The bottles of water in the bathroom are to be paid for - I noticed they're actually on the mini-bar list. I do not remember the price but it was cheaper to buy bottled water in the supermarket around the corner (a half liter bottle costs no more than 5 pesos). The mini-bar (in room 301) was hardly cold though - it didn't make a difference if I put my drinks in there or kept them in the room.

“ideal location, terrific value”

Great hotel. Highly recommend. I've traveled a great deal and this hotel met all requirements. Just a block off Zocola (city square) and walking distance to many attractions. Lots of shopping (dept stores, etc) very near. Area felt very safe, busy with people all hours. Check in easy and swift. Quiet room as requested. Clean, comfortable twin beds, nice bathroom, large tub with shower. Not a particularly large room but ample. good closet space, drawers. Safe, TV good, clock radio. Mini fridge, coffee maker ($2 for coffee pkt), large bottle water on hand for purchase which was nice for thirsty arrival. Good towels, sheets, halls clean. Breakfast buffet good - the same every day. Includes juices, coffee, assorted pastries, meat/cheese tray, mini sandwiches, eggs, beans, sausages, cereals, yogurt, fruit, pancakes. Breakfast restaurant not very busy, waiters ok, food was good, not spectacular but worth the $5 or so we added on. Subway stop 2 blocks or so at Zocola. Starbucks coffee in building. Bank with ATM across street. Denny's like restaurant on corner (ok if you're starving). Lots of shops nearby, ice cream "health" store at end of block. Staff friendly and helpful, tho not everyone spoke English. Free internet in lobby (2 terminals) sometimes busy. Mostly business people staying so quiet on weekend. Copy machine by b'fast area (unattended, free, paper not always on hand).
Desk has posted taxi costs, tours. Staff are not tour guides but were as helpful as they could be. Bikes out front must be for rent - tho I'm not sure I'd want to try to bike in the traffic. 30 minutes or less to/from airport.

“Average but Good Location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2010

The rooms were modern and clean if a bit compact. The hotel lacked atmosphere and was a bit sterile. The service was ok but suprised when the hotel refued to change US $ travellers cheques but there was a bank directly opposite and an exchange shop next door.
Location just off the main square was perfect though for tourist site seeing.
Note in general changing travellers cheques in Mexico even at Banks is not a simple proces that is with the exception on Banamex Bank branches who seem much better organised than others to cope with travellers cheques.

“Good value hotel, but frustratingly bad internet access”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 May 2010

The hotel is a good offering from NH hotels, with everything you would expect. Public areas are clean, spacious and fairly modern, and rooms are ok. Walls were surprisingly thin for what seemed like an old building, and noise travelled through. Wooden floors are much more hygienic than carpets, which I like in NH here in Latin America, but please ladies - take off those heels if you are going to pace the room late at night (men too for that matter!).

The staff were all friendly and welcoming.

The location is ok, but not great - I suppose it depends on what you want to do, but the area felt on the dodgy side to me. If you want to buy jewellery (and I could be wrong, but I would say fairly low end jewellery) then this is the location for you.

What really lets the hotel down for me as a business traveller is the internet. I will always prefer to PAY for GOOD QUALITY, FAST internet, which sadly was not on offer here. It's all wireless, with a reasonable signal, and security seems reasonable, but here's the problems :
1) Too slow - paying MXN116 is cheap, but it's too slow to make it worthwhile - why not give me a MXN116 option AND a MXN170 option, and make enough money to upgrade your bandwidth?
2) No connection to the hotel billing system - c'mon, this is 2010!! You are in the middle of an email, or online work, and your connection dies...walk down to Reception and sign for a printed piece of paper with a 10 digit case-sensitive password on it - back to your room and log on again. The provider, ECNex don't even have the system set up properly, so when you do connect, it takes you to a 'This page cannot be displayed' screen. ECNex - NH's website is www/nh-hotels.com, and not www.nhhotels.com - try and get it right for one of your clients eh?
3) sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't - helpdesk is not up to much.

The internet is essential for me for work, and for my personal life - keeping in touch wiht friends and family, catching up on news etc. I don't mind paying, and will pay more on occasions for better bandwidth - if I want to watch TV from home, for example, but low quality internet service so a hotel can tick the 'we have internet' box is not on. This lets down an otherwise very good mid-range hotel.

“clean comfortable and convenient”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 February 2010

Had 3 nights here to "do" the sights of Mexico City. It is aimed at the businessman, but , being just a block from the Zocolo it was a perfect spot for the holidaymaker too. The rooms were amazingly quiet for such a central position, spacious and had good bathrooms including a bath-tub. Furniture was functional rather than refined, but the huge bed was very comfortable, and there was plenty of wardrobe and drawer space fully to unpack.
Breakfast was buffet style, with omelettes and eggs cooked to order. Excellent choice of fruits, cheese, meats and Mexican specialities, if you care for chillies for breakfast
Plenty of good restaurants within walking distance for evening meals
