I was to have spent my last 3 nights in Mexico City here (following 4 days of business at another hotel) but cut my long weekend short by one day because I just couldn't stay at this hotel another night. Not only was the "Top Suite" small and shabby, it was also incredibly noisy due to the rooftop bar directly overhead and the street noise below, exacerbated by the fact the huge sliding glass doors to the terrace wouldn't close or lock. Since all that separated my balcony from the others is a row of potted plants, I was nervous leaving my room or sleeping because anyone could have come in at any time. And litter from the overhead bar constantly blew onto my terrace, making it look like a back-alley. In fact, when I checked in, there was lumber and assorted large items of construction debris being stored on my balcony which staff promptly removed and put on the sidewalk below for disposal...how odd! The bed was comfortable, but with the pulsing noise all night long, who could sleep? This is really more of a bar with attached rooms, rather than a hotel with a bar. Really, it was one of the worst hotel stays I have ever had.
Furthermore, the furnishings in the suite left much to be desired. Aside from the dated cowhide upholstery, the few pieces of furniture in the suite were ghastly uncomfortable. Has anyone who works at this hotel ever actually tried to spend a night there? A high-back chair with no legs ( !!! ), for example, which is barely better than sitting on the floor. No table or desk for a laptop, or even to eat upon. Stained white sofas...stained curtains and pillows and rugs.
The bathub was chipped, cracked, and hideously stained, with a showerhead that squirts in all directions except where needed. And the faucet fell off the wall when I tried to turn on the water. Hot and cold water blasted out irregularly. In short, the shower situation was a disaster, and the bathtub so grimey looking, no one would want to sit in it. Ditto the awful condition of the sink. I can't even guess the last time the floors were washed or swept: 5 minutes walking around the room barefoot and my feet were black with dirt. Not nice.
Staff was pleasant enough, but not terribly helpful. Directions to anyplace were confusing. Service at the restaurant was incredibly slow and disorganized both times I ate there, although room service was very fast. Too bad I had to eat off my lap due to the fact there is no table upon which to put a tray. The food was ok, but hardly great...better to walk the few blocks to the restaurants nearby, some of which are amazing and much, much less expensive.
In short, the bones of this hotel are great, save for the problem of the noisy bar. If these other problems could be adressed, the hotel would be amazing...and many of the problems are not difficult 6to fix (i.e. clean the rooms, replace fixtures, upgrade furniture etc). For the amount of money they charge to stay here, it is a horrible value and leaves a bad taste. I can't recommend this hotel to anyone, sadly.
