“Good business stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

I enjoy the hotel and have stayed there on three separate business trips. The rooms are excellent with a very modern design. Staff are friendly and helpful. Note that this is not a great family hotel in my opinion. There's a very chic bar on the ground floor and they play trance/techno music (I think that is what they call it) when you enter the hotel. It's a very cool place and in proximity to plenty of good restaurants. I think their restaurant is average but there's plenty of places nearby. It would probably be a good date hotel but I would probably stay somewhere else if my family were with me.

“W Hotel: Massage/Spa Service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

I spent 10 days in Mexico City and had occasion to get a massage at the W Hotel Spa. I stayed elsewhere for accommodations.

Overall, an excellent choice! Professional, rejuvenating, clean. Of course, trendy, hip, and cool. I chose to have a massage here, and I paid for about 1.5 hrs of Swedish relaxation. I forget the price, but if you are willing to spoil yourself, the massage is well-deserved. You will not feel guilty at all for the money spent.

However, I did have an ulterior motive. I chose the W Hotel as a comparison to the massage I received at the Four Seasons. (I did not stay at the Four Seasons.) You can read my review elsewhere for that massage. All in all, the W Hotel is top-notched and highly recommended for their spa.

“The Objective Reality of the W in DF”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

Here is the truth about staying at this hotel:

It is overpriced- even the lowest going rate over the New Year's holidays was about 20% more expensive than the Hilton Reforma or Embassy Suites; I've stayed at the former, which is an overall vastly superior hotel for reasons I will make clear here.

Why overpriced?
This place is like an older apartment building complex converted into a wannabe luxury hotel. I understand other W properties (such as in NYC, Hollywood) are the real deal, but this one here is not. The elevators took forever, had frequent 'technical' problems/delays, were generally shoddy and bounced around significantly if you jumped lightly (I tested).

The hallway to the room was darkly lit - atmospheric, but try finding the ice machines (floors 10,11,12)! It was like walking into pitch black, and terribly inconvenient. The door to the room had scratches and deterioration on its face - this is unprofessional, non-luxurious, and shoddy for a 'luxury' hotel.

The room itself - not too bad, but not great. Again, the Hilton would beat it on almost every count (and I get the feeling the Embassy Suites would beat both); there was a lamp hanging overtop a desk that simply did not work - just did not work; the toiletries (shampoo etc.) were extremely tiny bottles. I bring my own shampoo anyway but for a luxury hotel, you should be able to expect better. The room layout was interesting, but not fantastic. It is literally one big room, without anything separating the walk-in shower except a draw-curtain. The room would be acceptable for a couple, but nothing more. Having a guest over for the evening is awkward, because there's no sense of privacy about a) having a shower or b) using the toilet for anyone. Thus, this set-up didn't really jive with me.

Room service was great. TV worked just fine. I don't know how well the internet works, but at 200 pesos a day (around $16-17), I wasn't interested in finding out. I still cannot believe luxury hotels charging outrageous fees, no make that any fees at all, for something like internet. Seriously! Especially in this case it is ridiculous as I was able to literally walk across the street to the Starbucks and use the wi-fi for free (you need a password, but it's always the same one).

Staff at this are hotel in my experience are really hit-and-miss attitude-wise. Some were quite professional and helpful, others snobby. For some reason, the female staff were of the former and the males of the latter. A couple of the males working here emitted an extremely snobby attitude - and they are just hotel staff aren't they!

This hotel is located in a very nice area of Polanco, close enough to shops, Masaryk Ave, the Metro (Auditorio), which is convenient.

Overall, I would say this hotel is OK but its price is SERIOUSLY NOT justified by its shortcomings. You can stay in an area as convenient as here for the same or less (Embassy Suites, Hilton) and get more for your money.

I also noticed from reading other reviews of this hotel that whoever at the W responds to negative reviews simply copies and pastes some generic response that comes off like they just don't care about the legitimate complaints other guests have raised.

So, maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but I think this review is highly accurate. The hotel was OK, but I have simply stayed at much better hotels for a similar price.
