“Big rooms, comfortable beds, great restaurant. No good for late-risers”
Whilst this hotel does not initially look anything more that a three-star (the decor is overdue for updating, there are no top-shelf bathroom products or other five-star touches), don't be fooled, this is a very comfortable place to stay.
Located 10 minutes from the airport, it's on the flight path, yet double glazing keeps the rooms quiet. Our twin room had two firm and comfortable king beds, a spacious bathroom (shower, no bath), room to move and to store your belongings, and a big TV.
The Gym supplies a couple of running and cycling machines, all the weight training gear you'd need, a 10-15m pool, spa and blisteringly hot sauna. Shame it does not open earlier.
The restaurant, serving modern, European influenced Mexican food (or is it Mexican influenced Euro food?) is heavy on the seafood, with cheviche, squid, prawns, salmon, tuna dominating the menu. Unsure of Mexican wine, and naturally sceptical of house wines, I was pleasanty surprised by the delicious Baja California Cabernet. Restaurant service is fast and furious, the bow-tied waiters have your plate whisked away the moment you have finished, sometimes a moment too soon. Breakfast in the restaurant runs satisfyingly late, to 12:00. Multiple Bains Marie contain a variety of Mexican specialties, which change daily, but always include the ubiquitous refried beans with sides of corn chips, salsa and jalapenos. The smiliest, happiest looking omelette chef I have ever seen cheerfully creates bespoke omelettes on the spot, along with eggs and pancakes. A selection of tropical fruits, yoghurt, fruit kebabs, cereals and a salad complete the selection. The orange and grapefruit juices are freshly squeezed, and once again, the speedy service will make your head spin. A great breakfast, and pretty good value.
The negatives: this is not a perfect hotel by any means. The walls are thin enough so that my neighbour's blaring TV set woke me up at 6am, and I had to thump on the wall shouting "shut up" until they heard me. Hotel staff pay no attention to the Do Not Disturb signs, perhaps interpreting them as saying Molestar, Por Favor. At around 9am, a maid swoops around the corridors, hammering on all the doors loudly awakenig sleeping guests to ask if they need any laundry done. And if you are like me, and do not require your room totally made up every day of your stay, forget it. Leaving the Do Not Disturb sign up is no deterrent. Upon your return you'll have freshly laundered sheets and all your stuff will have been moved around a bit. For these reasons I can not recommend this hotel to guests who sleep lightly, require a sleep-in, or value their room's privacy.
I can't be sure what to make of the bar (Bar Bristol!), which resides behind a huge door just inside the main entrance, pretty much concealed from the lobby. It really has no atmosphere whatsoever, and I feel the hotel could make a few bucks if they broke down the wall and opened the bar to the lobby. This way, patrons would be drawn to the friendly staff and their splendid margaritas. The soulless ambience was perfectly accompanied by recorded music which was just loud enough to make conversation difficult, but the live bands were tres-kitch and subsequently very entertaining.
