“Good location, decent size rooms, safe and friendly service”

I spent two weeks in Mexico on business, four nights at this Hotel. Hotel Isabel was recommended, by a friend who had stayed here previously, as a base for exploring the Historic Centre.

It is situated a couple of blocks from the Zocalo and very convenient for the whole of the historic centre.

My room was very large with an en-suite. There was a safe large enough for my laptop and valuables and I had a view looking down the street which was good to get my bearings. The decor is dated with sickly peach furnishings and bedding plus some clashing patterns to add to the effect, but the room was clean and the bed comfortable. Service was friendly, there was free wifi, free water and perfectly located for everything I wanted to do in the area. Plus it was very cheap.

I didn't try the restaurant as I quickly discovered Cafe El Popular nearby which was great for breakfast or a coffee and snack.

As a solo, female traveller, who was going to be going out and about, the hotel was fine, as was Mexico City on the whole. I didn't go out alone after about 9-10pm when the streets were much quieter but otherwise I felt safe enough to travel on the metro and local transport.

If you are looking for budget accommodation in the Historic Centre this is most definitely a good bet.

“Hotel isabel is not a good value, it is a dump.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 February 2010

My husband and i travel on a low price budget. Granted, we are now middle-aged and accommodations that suited us in our youth do not always appeal to us. Hotel Isabel is definitely inexpensive but it is also dark, dreary, and dingy with an unhelpful staff. Our reservation was not available even though I had confirmed it twice. There was no apology or explanation. They put us in a very small room on the top floor, with a shared bathroom and a view of the corrugated roof covering. We often use this type of room but the bathroom at Hotel Isabel was not clean. The bar and restaurant reeked of desperateness. The safe and remote control did not work. We left the next day and found a hotel down the street (even closer to the Zocalo) for $20 more. If money is your prime consideration this hotel is fine but if you can spend a bit more there are lots of better places.

“Great value in Mexico City's historic centre”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2009

Within easy walking distance of all the sights in the historic centre and well-connected to the rest of the city, Hotel Isabel is a great bargain. Thin sheets, hard mattress and lumpy pillows, but huge, very clean rooms around bright courtyards with plenty of character. Helpful staff - room service is not on offer, but a disabled guest in the room next door had no difficulty arranging this. Good restaurant downstairs with friendly serrvice and plenty of breakfast options as well as lunch and dinner; internet access (not sure if it was free); a very helpful travel desk for arranging tours and onward tickets; good security. All this for about £12 per night. Hard to beat!
