“Waste of money - would never stay there again”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

I had a very negative experience during my recent stay here, and would not stay again. First, when we called ahead to find out if parking was available, we spoke to a woman answering the phone who told us that parking was available at a low price. When we arrived, however, they told us that no parking was available, (and we thus had to spend almost half of the hotel rate on parking in a nearby site). They also denied that any women worked at the front desk or answered the phone, although the following morning there in fact was a woman answering the phone. In addition, they were very rude to us. In spite of the fact that we were obviously a couple, they gave us a room with two single beds, and although we immediately asked to change, and had been in the room only one minute, they sent someone to inspect the room before we could get another room. The room we ended up with was in poor condition, the bed was just two single beds pushed together, and the curtains were damaged so the light came into the room and we slept very poorly. The location of this hotel is excellent, there is some beautiful features in the lobby and stairs, and we enjoyed breakfast at the rooftop restaurant, but with the extra money we spent on parking we could have stayed at any of the many other hotels in the same neighborhood for a higher price, and even hotels that cost half as much have rooms in better condition. Worth coming in to see the old tilework and the rooftop restaurant, but if you want to be treated with hospitality or sleep in a comfortable room, this isn't the place.

“Faded grandeur in great location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2011

My wife and I have stayed at Hotel Majestic twice, once in October 2009, and again in February 2011. If I had reviewed it in 2009, I would have given it four stars. Based on our more recent stay, I would only give it an "average" three star rating. This is unquestionably a once great hotel fallen on more difficult times. The entire facility feels faded, old, and out of date. The rooms are comfortable enough, but hardly top notch. The beds are some of the firmest (read: hardest) I've ever slept on in my life. However, I find that good for my back, so I don't mind. The bathrooms are old, and in need of modernization.
Nevertheless, there is something about this hotel I love, and it's not just the incredibly good location on pedestrian-friendly Calle Madero, right on the Zocolo in the center of Mexico D.F. The staff has always been very friendly and helpful to me. The facility, while aged, retains much of its original beauty. Plus, the price is right: this is a very economical place to stay. I would stay there again, should I return to Mexico City. Just don't expect luxury or ultra modern facilities.

“Not so bueno tarnished jewel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2011

The Majestic is in desperate need of renovation and does not live up to the Best Western name. If you're expecting the quality of their properties in the US, you'll be very disappointed. The building has fine bones, beautiful tile work and an old-fashioned elevator but the patina has clearly worn off; this is especially noticeable in the rooms. The wall to wall carpet looks like it's been there since 1975 and the bathroom fixtures are in disrepair. The 70's Mexican motel furniture is seriously depressing and the mattresses are as hard as a boards. As for the restaurant on the top floor, it's mediocre and the service indifferent. On the positive side, the rooms are clean and the view is quite fabulous from the front-facing rooms. Be prepared for a noisy night, even by Mexico City standards. There are better choices of hotels in the area but you may want to stay there if there's something special going on in the Zocalo.

Room Tip: Rooms facing zocalo have fabulous view. (Beware of noise.)

“Aging beauty; great rooftop view”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

We honeymooned here 24 years ago and were eager to see how the old Majestic was holding up.

The lobby and grand staircase are still eye-popping. The human-operated, brass elevator takes you to a bygone era, for sure. The place is old and needs an overhaul. Our room had an insanely noisy neighbor, so the front desk moved us to a more secluded room which was tiny but had huge closets.

No natural light or air (we followed the lead of previous TripAdvisor reviews and asked for a fan but there were none). Nice bed, problem-free plumbing; aging electric outlets wouldn't hold our chargers.

The rooftop restaurant offers a great view of the zocalo. Breakfast buffet is pricey (try the jugo verde, a refreshing juice made of cactus & celery), but the coffee keeps coming and the scenery is fantastic. As the cathedral bells rang, we saw zocalo action (two different protest marches, Sunday morning church-goers) and the snow-capped volcano.

The front desk staff was very helpful and friendly. Yeah, the Majestic is showing its age, but is a good bargain for its central location and old-style feel.

Room Tip: If you don't mind the street noise, get a room facing the zocalo: the 5:30 a.m. flag-raising is...

“Great situation but very noisy night!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2011

I was attracted to this hotel because of its situaiton next to the Zocalo, the main square, in Mexico City and I was really happy to be given a room overlooking the square, with a clear view of the two volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl in the distance. The hotel is showing its age in its fittings and furniture but it has a certain charm and I was glad to have chosen it for an overnight stay (the airport is only a 10-15 minute taxi ride away). I had always wanted to visit its rooftop restaurant where I had breakfast the next morning. The negative aspect was what happened inbetween- ear-splitting noises above my head from what sounded like a giant stone washing machine and then very, very loud bangs as if from a metal rod. Very frightening and disturbing, even for me (extremely hard-of-hearing). I didn't call to see what it was as I kept thinking it would stop. After about 2 hours, I managed to fall asleep so I suppose it did stop eventually. Hopefully I will get an explanation as I mentioned it in my check-out survey, and the problem will be solved for future visitors. I'll keep you posted. BTW, excellent price for this city-centre hotel - just over £65 including breakfast.
