“Good spot for an escape from Mexico while in Mexico.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2011

We stayed at the Villa Maria Cristina for three nights following a five night stay in San Miguel de Allende. This hotel is an upscale sanctuary with a definitely european feel. Like others have mentioned it is a somewhat significant walk from the sights, and one that you probably want to do only once a day.
Check-in and check-out was quick and easy. The room was immaculately appointed with fine woodwork and everything you could possibly need. (It is one of those places where they put slippers by you bed at night.)
Service at times was at times distant and cold and at other times warm and friendly. Our included continental breakfast was served in a beautiful dining room and consisted of just coffee/tea, juice, fruit and breads. The breads in Mexico have an empty, non-filling quality and if they had included one more item, like a cereal, I would have felt like I had actually had a real breakfast.
Our room was adjacent to the somewhat busy road so there was some traffic noise but the road certainly quieted down at night. And like others have mentioned we had a tiny bed but it was comfortable. Wifi wasn't accessible in our room but there was an available computer in the lobby area.
The photos I have seen (including my own) of this place make it look somewhat odd. I think it is just one of those spaces that doesn't photograph easily but when you are there you definitely feel as though you are in a clean, tasteful and luxurious sanctuary. Even the indoor pool/spa area is nicely done although we didn't use this feature. We paid $321/night including breakfast.

My husband and I stayed her in April 2010 at the end of a trip to Queretaro and San MIguel.
The property is fabulous and the restoration of this former mansion is perfectly done. The room was large with fine moulding, furnishings, linens and flooring.
Everything was in excellent condition.
We enjoyed the quiet location but easily walked into town.
No noise from the streets and the breakfast (included) was good.
Go there if you want to relax in a luxurious historical setting in one of Mexico's most beautiful and interesting cities

“Even better than hoped for.”

We really couldn't have asked for more. First, our tarvel agent had made a major mistake with our booking, and the entire staff at the hotel went out of it s way to calm us, reassure us, and then handle all the details of correcting the error. We found our suites extremely comfortable and sleeping was enhanced by the super bed and the quiet atmosphere. The air system worked fine.

An addtional benefit was the restaurant. Besides the continental breakfasts that were included, we ate two main meals there. We do not understand the comments of earlier guests who damned the restaurant food and staff. I had two superb dishes: the pescado veracruzana wrapped in banana leaf and Pacific mussels--one dozen very large ones--cooked with fresh mushrooms and onions in a chipotle sauce. The latter is something I calculate among the best dishes I have ever eaten; but it was quite spicey/picante. All soups were also fresh and tasty. The service might appear slow between courses, but that was because the fresh ingredients need to be prepared with patience. Meanwhile, the waiters were more than glad to chat about the hotel and life in Guanajuato. My wife was equally pleased with her choices.

“Nice hotel, but a little shady”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2009

We are gay couple from Brooklyn. We travelled around various colonial cities on our trip.

We drive from Mexico City with this hotel in mind - no reservation.

They recommend we not take the cheapest room (Patio Suite) as the bed would be too small (and from other reviews it seems like that was the right decision). We booked the next level (Junior Suite). The prices were $290 for a Patio and $350 for Junior. Although double the price of the St. Regis in Mexico City, we were too tired to figure something else out. The owner/manager (grey-haird gentlement) quoted the rates and gave the tour.

We originally asked if we could book the Patio and be upgraded to the Junior - according to the manager they were at 30% occupancy. He said no.

This was a Tuesday night.

We stayed one night. Upon check out, i reviewed the marketing materials and noticed that mid-week rates for less. We were being charged the weekend rate.

First, I will admit, I should have looked, but I just took the manager at his word.

Well, we had already paid (at checkin) for the room. I talked to the front desk and they embarrassingly admitted the 'mistake' and refunded me the difference in cash. The rate for the Junior was $290 during the week.

Everything worked out in the end, but I left feeling something was shady about hotel. Why would they charge us a weekend rate? I just can't believe it was a mistake since I tried to get them to upgrade us and we had numerous discussions about the rate.

We stayed in room #8. We had about 6 windows with wooden shutters. They rattled in the wind all night.

The room was nice, comfortable, free wifi. Cont'l breakfast and parking was included.

It is a little overpriced based on the service level of other hotels in Mexico. And, it is far from the center of Guanjuato - you can walk 15 mins or take a taxi.

If they lowered the room rate by 50% we would consider staying here again.

“Best hotel experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2009

We chose this hotel because it was one of the only hotels in Guanajuato that had a gym. Although check in time was at 3pm, we arrived early thinking they could store our luggage while we went out exploring. We were surprised to find out that they had upgraded our room because our original room was not ready. The room was of high end quality furniture and the hot tub was very relaxing! The hotel only has 13 rooms which makes it very quiet. The pool and gym were open 24hrs a day which made it very convenient for us. The pool is made out of small tiles which gives it a Romanesque look. The gym had a few cardio machines but also had pilates mats available. The restaurant had a large selection of foods and wines available. It was completely empty the entire time which made it seem like the staff were personally serving us. We truly felt like we were spoiled the entire time!

The hotel towels were soft, had a nice smell to them (compared to normal hotel towels), and were available in the gym and pool. Complementary water bottles were also made available in the rooms, pool, and gym. Umbrellas are also made available throughout the hotel in case an occasional rain shower slips in. The wireless internet was complimentary and fast!

This was what I consider luxury for a great rate. We found all the other reviews helpful but fortunately, did not experience any of the negatives. We are recommending this hotel to all our friends and we hope to return in the near future!
