“Don't if you don't have to”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2009

Was assigned this hotel so no real choice in the matter. Guanajuato is an amazzing and beautiful place, so to be staying outside the city, on a dry urban ring road, with views of old garages, was very disappointing.

The rooms were large and clean and generic and charmless, and come with the ubiquitous cover and blanket, the ones where you have no idea how many times they've been used before without being cleaned. These I am happy to say seemed clean, but then the hotel is apparently very new. Also the room looked over the internal atrium, so to know what was happening weather wise to decide what to wear, I had to go out of the room in my towel and look out of the window in the corridor.

Also it's an Express, meaning, no room service other than Dominos on the speed dial. Seriously. Also no bar other than an Appleby's next door which closed at 11.

I thought breakfast was fine, huevos rancheros every day though, and fruit, my colleagues begged to differ. And when the hotel was full, as it was when we were there, of evangelists at an evagelist get-together, it could be a 20 min wait in a queue, not to mention a melee at the lifts.

Reception was fine, if easily confused by any change in booking.

“Excellent facilities! Not so good location”

We stayed there for 2 nights during the Christmas holidays. The Hotel is new. Nice design. Rooms are clean and big with climate. It offers a complimentary breakfast above average. It was high season and check-in and check-out lasted long, be patient. It is not located on downtown but a taxi will take you there in a 10 minute ride for 40 pesos ($3 US). By the way, driving in Guanajuato is a nightmare, lots of cars and there are no parking space. Avoid car rental!! Try to rent one of the tours offered.

“Nice Hotel and Nice Location”

The Holiday Inn is the hotel I use when going to Guanajuato. It is not in the city center, but only a short taxi ride away. Having used this hotel for business previously, I reserved it for a trip with family members to tour Guanajuato.

The rooms are a nice size, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was included and was more than adequate. If you are looking for a nice hotel that is comfortable, then this is recommended. If you are looking for a hotel in the city center, then do not chose the Holiday Inn.

“Good, once past the initial problems...”

I had booked a King bed directly at the hotel chain's website, but when we checked in, two bellhops accompanied us to our room - with twin beds! Back we went to the front desk, where they said they had no King available. After a 15-minute wait, they "found" one, but it "wasn't ready." We had to leave our luggage in the baggage check, so that we could catch the hotel's last shuttle into town. Yes, the hotel does provide something of a shuttle, but it makes only one stop, at the Alhondiga, which is at the very beginning of the downtown area. It also runs only once an hour, and try taking it back! For most purposes, it might as well not exist.

The hotel is, however, conveniently located very close to the Central Camionera, so if you're busing it to Guanajuato and don't have a lot of luggage, you can walk there.

After spending the afternoon and evening in town, we took a cab back to the hotel to claim our room, only to find that the air conditioner wasn't working. Back downstairs again. New room. A/C worked but the room safe didn't, and the desk was dirty, with crumbs and spill marks. The bed was medium-hard, but bearable, and the bathroom was quite large, with good lighting.

After we worked out the initial problems and settled into our final room, everything was fine. The included breakfast was quite nice.

The hotel has a restaurant, Casa Valadez. It's not attached, but on the same property. We had dinner there one night, and we were pleasantly surprised to find that it had excellent food, even if the service was a little strange - the waiter was a complete space cadet. He would correctly repeat everything I said to him, and then bring the wrong thing. And I was speaking his language!

All in all, this Holiday Inn is a decent place to stay, once any initial problems are addressed.

“Clean and Comfortable”

We stayed one night in the center of Guanajuato but had an early morning bus to catch so we stayed our second night here at the Holiday Inn Express which was closer to the bus station. The hotel was very clean and comfortable. It was also more attractive and larger than what I usually think of with the Holiday Inn Express. The staff was helpful and attentive. We arrived in the evening and left early in the morning so were there a short time. The room rate (about $100) seemed fair and included a pretty good buffet breakfast with both American and Mexican entrees as well as fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, pastries, etc. It was a comfortable choice. I am glad that we stayed in the historic center of Guanajuato as it is nice to be able to walk around to the interesting places, cafes, restaurants, etc. and then be able to return to your hotel but this was a convenient place to go for our last night. Other reviews mention staying here and taking cabs into and out of town (about 3 dollars each way), which I guess could work out as well.
