“Don't be fooled by the entry way!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

We stayed in this hotel for a night because all the hotels in Guanajuato that had parking were full. The facade and entry way looked good enough that I didn't bother to ask to see the room. I asked (in Spanish) for a quiet room. Once we got to the room, it was nothing like the entry way. The beds and pillows were hard, and overall the room was tired and dingy. The remote didn't work and the bellboy said he would bring it back up, but we never saw him again. The worst part was that the room opened out to one of the side streets like a motel and the cars/trucks/motorcycles that went by throughout the night sounded like they were immediately outside the door, it was very, very, very loud!

Unfortunately, not worth the $100 paid, unless the alternative was no hotel at all.

Room Tip: If there are any rooms that don't face a street - take it!

“OK for one stay”

We spent one night at the Gran Plaza hotel. The lobby area was very large with painting about the mining in the area. The beds are the typical hard Mexican beds. I think I am getting used to them as they don't bother me anymore. LOL. The history in this town is pretty amazing. All the tunnels under the city is something worth experiencing. The town square is wonderful with all the Mariachis, people, restaurants, Cathedral. The special tour with the singers. I would like to go back to this city again as a tourist and not just passing through for the night. As for the Grand Hotel it was fine for one night.

“New Mattresses & Bathroom Fixtures Would Go a Long Way”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 June 2007

We spent two nights at this hotel during the week of June 12. On the plus side, we liked the hotel's appearance. The staff was friendly and helpful (we live in Mexico and we find an inattentive or hostile hotel staff to be the norm. On this score, the Gran Plaza was a pleasant surprise). We drove 5 hours from Mexico City and being just outside Guanajuato was preferrable to being inside the city, because I would have been too tired to negotiate the myriad of tunnels to find a downtown hotel. On the minus side: the mattress. Hard and uncomfortable. I couldn't rest in one position for more than an hour or so before feeling pain. Our room was hot and the air conditioner was old and more like a glorified fan. My wife found the shower to be inadaquate; for whatever reason, water didn't really rain down. The toilet: you have to flush it a few times (don't wanna say more). And the courtesy shuttle downtown: it leaves the hotel every hour 'till 5pm but comes back empty- they wont' take people back!). Overall, a few minor fixes would ramp up this hotel's rating considerably, in our view.

“Two nights at the Gran Plaza Guanajuato hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2006

Six of us spent 2 nights at the Gran Plaza Guanajuato Hotel as recommended to us by other friends. The reception desk was attentive and helpful. The rooms we had were adequate. We spent very little time in our rooms as there is so much to see and do in Guanajuato. We parked our vehicle there and took taxi cabs into the town itself. It was agreed that we would have gotten lost in the tunnels that run under the city and parking would have been difficult.

When we return, which we will, we will use the taxi cabs again. The hotel has a nice swimming pool, which we did not have time to use but others were enjoying it Saturday late afternoon. A Continental breakfast was included with our rooms, which consisted of a selection of fruit, rolls, cold cereal, and orange juice and coffee. If you wanted eggs and a few other items, the cost was $55 pesos.

We did not eat in the restaurant other than breakfast as we enjoyed trying the cafes and restaurants in town. The beds are hard....some of us liked that and some of us did not.

We will return to Guanajuato in the near future but will try another hotel for the experience. But the Gran Plaza Hotel was comfortable and met our needs.

“Good option worth staying in”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 June 2005

This hotel is located just outside downtown. Rooms are good not great, they have a balcony that looks over a beautiful courtyard with a large unheated pool. Rooms cost about $100.00 a Bank, bar, restraunt are all located on the grounds and there is plenty of room to park your car. Driving your own vehicle in this town is not advisable because of many tunnels running under the mountains. It is very easy to get lost and very difficult to get back to your starting point. There are many taxies and they will take you one way to town for $3.50 . As you enter the town you will see young men trying to flag you down these are local guides and it's worth $10.00 to have them guide you through the city and its tunnels. You should decide where you want to stay before getting to town. Parking is a real problen if you want to stay in the downtown colonal area. There are several nice older small hotels in the centro area and all have great inside / outside earing area's which are great for people watching. Ther is a new Holidat Inn Express across from the Grand Plaza
and would be a better choice since the Grand Plaza's beds are kike sleeoing on the floor so if you chose the Grand Plaza request beds that you can sleep in. For a true colonal experiance stay down town but do you homework so you can feel confident about your choice before arriving.
Two nights in this town should be enough to experiance the true old colonial
surroundings. There is very little American influance compared to larger cities in the state of Guanajuato. While you are in this area you should take the senic route from Guanajuato to Delosis Helidago about one and a half hour drive as you leave and by all means have great trust in your driver as this road reaches about 10,000 feet and has very few guardrails,no shoulder and your vehicle could tumble down 2000 or 3000 feet with one small mistake. Don't stay in Dolores Hildago because ther are only sparce accomidations of low quality. The town is very nice to shop in for pottery and its fun to stroll around the plaza and eat ice cream in over 100 different flavors and dont look for the ice cream store you get it off the many carts parked around the plaza , it tasty and safe to eat. From DH head south towards San Miguel de Allende about 30 minutes do stop at the stores along this drive the have good prices. Look for a sign on you right about 7 kilometers North of DE Allende { Hotel Taboada ] a wonderful resort for about $120.00 per night. You must drive about 2 miles on a cobble stone road that's not much fun and you will approach a guard shace a steel fence tell the guard you want to go to the office he will accomidate.
What to experiance beaytiful grounds, beautiful pools fed from underground hot springs, horseback riding, tennis and a 10 minuet taxi ride to Man Miguel de Allende. The resort has a great restraunt with pool side service very helpful staff. This resort offers the best of the best dollar for dollae [ A Must Stay for you and your family or just a romanic getaway ]
