“Beautiful”

This hotel is a beautiful piece of history that continues to welcome visitors. We stayed here two different times on our most recent trip to Mexico. We had two different rooms, one had only a small window that opened out into an atrium, but it was bright enough. The other had large doors that opened to the street and a window to the hallway. It was nice to have the exterior window, but Guadalajara is a noisy town so the room without the exterior window was much quieter. The beds were comfortable and the bathrooms were spacious. The hotel staff was very helpful. There is a nice pool and gym but it was too cold for us to swim, it was winter after all, could have used a hot tub after all the walking... The location was an added bonus, many restaurants and stores within walking distance. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: They have an airport shuttle. Ask but i think you have to stay a minimum of two nights to take adva...

“Room with no window! What the...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

The Hotel looks impressive, but once I was in the room I was less impressed. The room had no window to the outside of the building (just to the rather dark atrium with the need to use curtains for some privacy).

I was too exhausted to go ask for another room, and the small advantage was that the free internet (normally only intended for use in the Lobby) worked also in my room, saving me some cash. So I decided to just succumb and stay.

Overall I was very displeased because of being given a windowless room that made me feel like being locked into a closet. Other than that, though, the Hotel was fine. Fair is fair, I will give one added star for the good stuff. A good rating, however, I cannot give them because windowlessness to me means a very strong demotion.

The good:
- Hotel has private shuttle service that will bring you to the airport in half an hour, even for very early flights.
- Hotel is safe, clean and has a "serious" atmosphere.
- Central location right in the very middle of town.

The bad:
- Beware of windowless rooms. Maybe they keep those for the people who book over a cheap website, but it's only a theory.
- They are reluctant to accept plastic. Bring lots of cash or book/pay in advance.
- Kind of noisy, poorly isolated rooms especially when adjacent to the main atrium.
- Guadalajara center has really a lot of traffic.
- No minibar in the room.

Room Tip: Make it very clear upon booking that you want a room with balcony or facing the outside.

“Wonderful Colonial Hotel Close to so much....”

Very comfortable beds, awesome shower and the inside of the hotel is splendid. We paid 1900 pesos for 3 nights. Beautiful fountain in lobby. Elevator is good. Columns and arches as well as the colours are gorgeous.

Front desk staff was remarkable. They provided maps for us to find places we wanted to see. They genuinely wanted your stay to be great. They set us up on a in house ride to the Central Bus Station, about a half hour ride for 130 pesos in a unmarked Honda Oddessy van, quite good. Driver didn't speak english but was very nice, and a good driver.

There was fantastic Mexican/Spanish music that went until 10pm sharp. The sound travels very well in there so if you turn in or turn on the TV you will hear it. Great ambiance though.

The restaurant was the only snag, we were there, later about 9. We halfed up a burger and a Ceasar. The ceasar really was not very good, very untraditional, over dressed and left to full leaves trying to makes it fancy or different. We had a CEASAR SALAD this way however the dressing made from scratch at the table in Puerto Vallarta at "No Way Jose" and it was excellent. They didnt pull it off here. The burger, while fresh, had large raw spots. We ate other places after that. We did not get sick after eating there.

There was always bottled water in the room, and no cracks in tiles, no bugs of course. Slept very well there. Felt very taken care of.

It is a gem. Staying again one day.

Room Tip: Based on this experience any room would be good. You may want a view of the square and Cathedral.

“Beautiful Hotel in a not so beautiful neighbourhood”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

I enjoyed the hotel a lot but the downtown area is not very well taken care of.
I found many people living on the streets and begging for money in this area.
There are beautiful churches and historic buildings though.
I took great pictures there.
I recommend the hotel for business trips.

I travel once a month to Guadalajara and I've always stayed at this hotel. No luxury, but very interesting classic building with clean and nice rooms. I still don't understand why it's so cheap and so much better than budget chains like Holiday Inn etc...
