On the 17th of September, I arrived at the high security resort and to my horror realized that I was absolutely the only guest staying on the property. Consequently, the entire place looked lonely, abandoned and deserted and the management ordered to switch all the lights off to save electricity. The hotel, as indicated by the name “los arboles”, is surrounded by trees in a tropically looking forest, and the lack of light was contributing to an unnatural level of anxiety and discomfort. The highly guarded gate and extensive number of security personnel created an image of having walked into a “high security” correctional facility, rather than a spot to enjoy and relax. The pool was closed and it looked isolated. I was walked through the darkness to the hotel restaurant and have found it also dark and empty. The security staff started contacting the kitchen personnel over the phone , which allowed us to dine after 30 minutes with 4 members of staff , constantly looking at their watches and seeking to go home. The deadly silence in the entire, obscure dining area, was decorated with paintings displaying skulls, dis-attached body parts or fighting rats, which increasingly created an atmosphere of discomfort and fear. In addition to that, I was given a gloomy room, that was very disappointing, and did not even remotely meet the expectations of a four star property. The room, even though clean, was very basic. The walls very bare, cold, there was no carpet, no TV, no bath tub. It was located in a remote little cottage and throughout the night there was a noise that at first was interpreted by me and my partner as human presence intending to gain access to the house, rather than wild animals around the house.
I stayed in Camino Real Sumiya resort one night before and am amazed about how drastic not only the price but the quality was between the two resorts and would advice everybody to check the first resort first and opt for the latter only in case you can not find an adequate property.
