My original plan for Tepotzan had been to drive in, park near the zocalo and on foot check out a few different hotels. The Posada was on the list, although it was more expensive than we usually choose. In the end, we chose this hotel mainly because it was the first we came upon after a 10-hr drive (many hrs of it lost) and approaching Tepotzlan from the back side, which is narrow, steep cobblestone streets, with the zocalo no where in site. Lonely Planet had said it was worth the splurge, so we just asked the first person we saw for directions, found the hotel, said yes to the price and settled in quite happily. Their weekday prices are heavily discounted. We paid about 1850 pesos for a junior suite, which was a large room with two big beds (too hard for our taste), two balconies with amazing views of the zocalo and surrounding hills. It was a great place to relax in the afternoon. Most of our hotels were not so good for just hanging out. In this one, we would get up and make a pot of coffee in the room, drink it on the balcony, then go down for breakfast. The breakfast area has an amazing view and the prices were reasonable. My husband likes eggs. If it were just me, I would buy pastries and eat them with my cofee on the beautiful room balcony. After breakfast, we would do sightseeing and eat lunch out. Around 3, we would return to the hotel to nap or read a book. For dinner, we ate at the hotel once and in town the other times. My husband loved the hotel dinner. Again, the view can't be beat and the service was great. It was, however, the most expensive meal of our trip at 500 pesos. The town has lots of good restaurants for better prices, but none can match the view.
Parking was easy and secure.
The staff was adequately helpful. We met the owner when we ate dinner. He was very friendly and we had a nice chat. He offered to give us good directions to return our rental car into Mexico City. However, the day before our departure, I mentioned this to the front desk, who said they would get the information. For some reason, this did not happen and we had to find our own way. The front desk staff always appeared to be too busy and I felt like we were interrupting them if we had a question. As we were checking out, the man helping us fielded two telephone calls. For this price, I expect a bit more focused service.
Tepotzlan in a great little town. When we travel, we usually spend every day hustling to see and do a lot. We stayed here three nights and spent one day just walking around the little town and enjoying the hotel. It is a nice place to slow down.
