“Fantastic option in Barra de Potosi”

Nothing but positive vibes will envelop you if you stay in this clean, family-friendly, VERY reasonably priced guest house south of Zihuatanejo. We rented the main house that fronts the beach which consists of one large bedroom, one standard double sized bedroom, both with bathrooms, and a very large equipped kitchen and dining area - and I can say without reservation that the price is an absolute bargain for all the space and convenience you get, perfect for a family group.

Barra de potosi has been a favourite of mine for some years now, but this is the first time I've stayed there, previous visits being as daytrips from Zihuatanejo. It's a lovely spot, away from the package holiday crowd, authentically Mexican in vibe and with a warm, clean and relatively safe sea to bathe in. The waves are just high enough to enjoy body- or boogieboard surfing, but nothing really risky. Plus there don't seem to be any currents to worry about, and the fine sand beach shelves away in a gentle gradient. Swimming here is a delight, with fish swimming between your legs in the clear water.

One of Casa Puesto del Sol's good points is that it is only a 5 minute walk from a multitude of enramadas that lie alongside the mouth of the Rio Potosi. Seriously good sea food is available all day here, the prawns are good but for truly fresh, choose the fish that is caught by the local fishermen (huachinango is landed fresh daily) in any one of a number of styles. The first enramada you come to walking from the guesthouse has always served us well over a number of years (and always fills up early), and the next place along the line did seem to lack a little in comparison the one time we had to eat there. We didn't explore further, but there are plenty more places to eat along the line, some of which may well be even better.

Getting back to the guest house, it's position along the beach from the enramadas is a bonus, and this portion of the beach is much less crowded. Right alongside is the only hotel in the area, which doesn't intrude and we weren't disturbed by their guests. It does act as a great signpost for finding the Casa Puesto del Sol though. Tito and Carmen look after the place while the owners are in Canada, and they do a great job, keeping it spotlessly clean and trying hard to make sure your stay is as comfortable as possible. Tito will also snag you a great Huachinango on the days he goes to fish, and if cooking it is too much effort, Carmen will do it for you, preparing an entire meal for a modest fee.

If I *have* to find a negative, in summer the mosquitoes are pretty fierce, ignoring all but the most thickly-applied layers of repellent, but they are much less of a problem from November round to Easter. Also the rooms lack AC, which wouldn't have been a problem as the sea breezes and fans are acceptable, but for a couple of days my daughter got sick and was running a temperature which made it pretty uncomfortable for her. That's just bad luck on our part, noone else's fault, but if you do like your bedrooms arctic cool, then you should look elsewhere.

Overall a fine guesthouse in a beautiful spot, safe for families and romantic for couples. And as the name suggests, the sunsets are something to behold.

“A lovely casa on the beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 May 2006

In early May 2006 we spent 4 nights in Barra de Potosi, after 4 nights in Zihuatanejo, at this lovely house on the beach.

We rented the bottom portion which is 2 bedrooms, each with it's own bathroom and separate entrances to the outside. It has a large, fully equipped kitchen with view of the ocean. Nice palapa out front with 2 hammocks, table/chairs and lounge chairs.
No pool but I'm sure you could use the pool next door at the Hotel Barra de Potosi for the price of a drink or a taco. Even though it is right next to the hotel the house is very private.

Between the house and the caretaker's house there is also an adorable 1 bedroom bungalow with kitchen.

Prices are VERY reasonable.

I had wonderful communication with owners Syd and LaRae before our trip. They live part-time upstairs (separate entrance) but were not there while we were.

The waves here are perfect for boogie boarding and body surfing. Not too big...not too small. It is a beautiful, clean and quiet beach. The waves were much larger the further north I walked.

The house is a short walk, maybe 1/2 mile, to the enramada area of Barra de Potosi. I think there are about 15 enramadas there, which are outdoor, palapa covered restaurants with hammocks right on the beach. They all seem to close up around 6PM.
There are no groceries in Barra de Potosi so you may want to stock up on food before arriving.

Thanks Syd & LaRae! We had a wonderful, relaxing stay and I highly recommend Casa Puesta del Sol.
But, shhh quiet everyone. I want to make sure the house is available for our next stay.

My daughter and I spent 3 nights at Casa Puesta Del Sol. It was the most relaxing part of our vacation.

Syd and La Rae were wonderful hosts. They made sure we had everything we needed.

The room was clean and the staff was friendly.

I can't wait to return for another laid back vacation!
