“Cost $195 still not worth it.”

Went using SunWing with my husband, my best friend and her husband. The one good thing i can say is that I like the location - it was just a couple minutes by taxi into town and it was right next door to the 'Mega' which is a good grocery store you can use to buy food because the food is aweful at the Getaway Club. My friend ate the food twice in 8 days thanks to the mystery meat that was offered. The breakfast was somewhat edible. I do feel bad because the staff were very nice. There were probably 30 guests including us and we all came together on the plane from Vancouver. First we were convinced to upgrade our room to oceanview for $20 a day and it was necessary because they were the nicest rooms and it was still a 2/10. During our stay my husband got trapped in the elevator(one of the 2 was out of order the whole time, the working one broke with him in it) and there was a terrible storm that caused the power to go out and we had no back up generator and it was at night so we went and hung out at the Mega store and bought flashlights and food. Loved Puerto Vallarta and will return just not a chance it would be to the Getaway Club. I wouldn't recommend it to an enemy. Oh and the spa was FULL of mold and water that they didn't even try to hide, it wasn't open during our time there.. =)

“Loud Party Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2010

This is definitely a party hotel. There are tons of games going on at the pool all day that consists of people losing parts of their bathing suits and lots of drinking. I went with my friends when we were in college and we were there during the "Canadian Spring Break" so the hotel was littered with young people, which was perfect for us at the time! We got their all-inclusive meal plan, but there is only so many plates of beans and rice you can eat so we eventually ended up eating out a lot. The room was standard. Nothing too fancy but it did the job. We did spot a few crockroaches in the staircase, but hey it's not the 4 seasons right? There are tons of beach chairs to lay out on but you gotta get there early to claim one! So unless you are looking for a great party destination with tons of activities then this is the place...

  • Liked — Pool and location
  • Disliked — loudness, somewhat dirty

“the people made the trip!”

when me and my gal pals booked our trip the travel agent showed us this web site and we were reading bad review after bad review and to tell you the truth we were expecting this really bad resort that was dirty and had really bad food.........
now the truth when we got there the first thing we seen was the cops.. intimidating yes but they were so nice and they always sadi hi when ever then see you... the staff was so nice and went out of their way just to make sure you were happy, and if you needed something they made sure they could help you as fast as they could.. the hotel rooms were ok they were not the best but i mean when you go on vacation why would you want to spend all your time in the hotel right? they beds were a little hard but not bad enough that you couldnt sleep... when you check in they ask if you want a lock box and it is 2 bucks and day and the lock box wasnt as bix as i thought it would be but it fit all our wallets and important papers in there and you do have to get a remote for the tv at the front dest... now we heard alot about the maids going in peoples stuff and taking what ever they wanted... UMMM NO... all 3 of us left our stuff out in the open and not one thing went missing ever.. the water pressure wasnt great but it worked. the A.C worked very well. the one thing that did get to me once in a while is that the elevator took forever and only one was working but i mean you can always use the stairs. the food was ok not great but there is some really good places to eat just a few blocks away, the drinks they made were strong but very good and the bar tenders for sure made the party good!... if you are looking for a quite getaway they i wouldnt go there ... on the beach was a really fun beach party that they had for 2 days and just down the beach was a rave! as for the beach it was ok i cant really say much about it as it was the first time i have ever been to the ocean.. the activites were amazing they always had alot to do there and there was always something to do there... i would say the worst part of the trip hands down was the plane ride it was way to small! so go enjoy yourslef had have a tequila sunrise made by "El Golden Boy"...=)

“Not like it used to be”

First of all I stayed here 8 years ago and its not the same as before. This is a good place for its price and location. If you are between 25-35 its great. Avoid the easter/spring break as Mexicans come in and take over the city and resort for this week and its too noisy, dirty and crowded. Its a decent place for a week, 2 weeks would be way too long here. The beds are brutal so make sure you ask for a mattress pad and a remote for the TV. It is a party resort so come here with a group of friends and its a blast. If you are over 40 and prefer the finer things, then dont pick this place. I paid just under a grand and had a great ocean view on top floor of the tower, so ask for the higher floors if you can. Good Luck!

“Club G has friendly staff and potential.....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 February 2009

My friend and I booked this vacation hoping for a break from Manitoba winter! We didn't read the reviews until after we booked the hotel. I have to say I was worried after reading the reviews so I pretty much expected the worst checking in.

It was around 1:30 in the morning when we checked in, the letter given to me from the front desk wasn't the best welcome, "Dont worry about the police in the hotel, they come to work in the city this month, do not be afraid." Ok, so this made me a little nervous....especially since the letter was dated for December and it was February.
(Not to worry, it is true, there are police everywhere, but they wont bother you at all)

Checking in to the room, it was pretty sparse and there were only a few towels. However, as others had said, after leaving a $5.00 tip the first day, the room was cleaned nicely every day. My friend asked for a hair dryer and we got a lock for the safe deposit box in the room. My bed was like sleeping on a piece of wood, actually a piece of wood is probably more comfortable. Anyway, we asked for some foam for the bed and it made a big difference. The gym was out of commission, not that I wanted to use it anyway, but you can get a workout from using the stairs to your room, a good plan since only one elevator works and the one that does is slow.

The staff at the hotel are very friendly. They are always smiling and we had no problems with them at all. We tried to tip a few of the better ones. George in the restaurant, omelet girl and a few of the others. They couldnt have been friendlier. Then there is George that works on the beach, now there is a character. He gets you umbrellas and small tables (no giraffes, I asked- he laughed but didnt give me one). I dont know how much he understands, but he will get you what ever you need. After a few days, he felt like part of my family, along with all the other strolling vendors on the beach...every five minutes someone is trying to sell you something, almost free! Your name on a grain of rice, hats, shirts, you name it, they will try and sell it to you !

The beach of the hotel is nice, better than the one at the Sheraton. There is also a pool a the hotel too, it was fine, not that many people were in it, it actually wasn't a busy week, not what I expected after reading all the reviews, everyone was pretty well behaved. The pool music was interesting to say the least, lots of interesting songs .... I can't say I had heard that one before. The drinks are good, strong but they do the trick. There is a bar in the lobby too where poeple go in the evening adn the entertainment isn't much. Bad singing from the hotel guests (myself included) carries out to the rooms but its over by midnight so it really isn't that bad. Get a room facing the water if you think it will bother you.

The food as everyone says, is not good. The breaksfast was fine, good omelets any way you want, fresh fruit, yogourt and granola. Load up on it, the rest of the meals are not great. You can get hamburgers for lunch, they aren't bad but after a few days of them, not so good. The dinners are terrible, the labels on the food don't match up to what they say they are but if you make a reservation you can eat in the restaurant on site for a couple of nights. It is better than the buffet.

Still, you can go downtown, it isn't a long walk at all, one of the best features of the hotel and two of us ate cheap (under 20.00 US) for a nice meal. Theres lots too see, and the weather was great. We did two of the tours, but they weren't the best. The city tour was a bus ride but didnt show much that you couldnt walk to see your self. Not worth the money, neither was the whale trip. We say whales sitting on the beach, better than the choppy ride all day in a boat to an island that wasnt much of an island....if I had to do it again, I would skip the tours or do a half day tour, not the all day one.

All in all, Club Get a Way isn't as scary as I thought it would be. It has lots of potential, but it does need some work done to it. It is comfortable but after a week, I was ready to leave it. Go with a sense of humour if you stay there and plan to spend most of your time out of the hotel and you will be fine. The hotel staff are nice and we went some really fun people.

You will find you spend a lot of money tipping people. I really didn't mind that part of it, even the modest accomodations at the Club Get a Way felt like luxury compared to the poverty that you know is not too far away.
