My friend and I booked this vacation hoping for a break from Manitoba winter! We didn't read the reviews until after we booked the hotel. I have to say I was worried after reading the reviews so I pretty much expected the worst checking in.
It was around 1:30 in the morning when we checked in, the letter given to me from the front desk wasn't the best welcome, "Dont worry about the police in the hotel, they come to work in the city this month, do not be afraid." Ok, so this made me a little nervous....especially since the letter was dated for December and it was February.
(Not to worry, it is true, there are police everywhere, but they wont bother you at all)
Checking in to the room, it was pretty sparse and there were only a few towels. However, as others had said, after leaving a $5.00 tip the first day, the room was cleaned nicely every day. My friend asked for a hair dryer and we got a lock for the safe deposit box in the room. My bed was like sleeping on a piece of wood, actually a piece of wood is probably more comfortable. Anyway, we asked for some foam for the bed and it made a big difference. The gym was out of commission, not that I wanted to use it anyway, but you can get a workout from using the stairs to your room, a good plan since only one elevator works and the one that does is slow.
The staff at the hotel are very friendly. They are always smiling and we had no problems with them at all. We tried to tip a few of the better ones. George in the restaurant, omelet girl and a few of the others. They couldnt have been friendlier. Then there is George that works on the beach, now there is a character. He gets you umbrellas and small tables (no giraffes, I asked- he laughed but didnt give me one). I dont know how much he understands, but he will get you what ever you need. After a few days, he felt like part of my family, along with all the other strolling vendors on the beach...every five minutes someone is trying to sell you something, almost free! Your name on a grain of rice, hats, shirts, you name it, they will try and sell it to you !
The beach of the hotel is nice, better than the one at the Sheraton. There is also a pool a the hotel too, it was fine, not that many people were in it, it actually wasn't a busy week, not what I expected after reading all the reviews, everyone was pretty well behaved. The pool music was interesting to say the least, lots of interesting songs .... I can't say I had heard that one before. The drinks are good, strong but they do the trick. There is a bar in the lobby too where poeple go in the evening adn the entertainment isn't much. Bad singing from the hotel guests (myself included) carries out to the rooms but its over by midnight so it really isn't that bad. Get a room facing the water if you think it will bother you.
The food as everyone says, is not good. The breaksfast was fine, good omelets any way you want, fresh fruit, yogourt and granola. Load up on it, the rest of the meals are not great. You can get hamburgers for lunch, they aren't bad but after a few days of them, not so good. The dinners are terrible, the labels on the food don't match up to what they say they are but if you make a reservation you can eat in the restaurant on site for a couple of nights. It is better than the buffet.
Still, you can go downtown, it isn't a long walk at all, one of the best features of the hotel and two of us ate cheap (under 20.00 US) for a nice meal. Theres lots too see, and the weather was great. We did two of the tours, but they weren't the best. The city tour was a bus ride but didnt show much that you couldnt walk to see your self. Not worth the money, neither was the whale trip. We say whales sitting on the beach, better than the choppy ride all day in a boat to an island that wasnt much of an island....if I had to do it again, I would skip the tours or do a half day tour, not the all day one.
All in all, Club Get a Way isn't as scary as I thought it would be. It has lots of potential, but it does need some work done to it. It is comfortable but after a week, I was ready to leave it. Go with a sense of humour if you stay there and plan to spend most of your time out of the hotel and you will be fine. The hotel staff are nice and we went some really fun people.
You will find you spend a lot of money tipping people. I really didn't mind that part of it, even the modest accomodations at the Club Get a Way felt like luxury compared to the poverty that you know is not too far away.
