THE PLACE OVERALL: Great relaxing place (we were there during the high season of semana santa, when lots of Mexican families travel) for a dad, 6 month pregnant mom, and a wild almost 2 year old. We loved the weather, as we are used to the dry heat from baja, with great breezes and humidity.
The pool is nice with a good kiddie area. There is also a swim up bar at the separate adults only (which they really did enforce) pool area. The beach is good and a lot bigger than we expected.
Ditch the wrist bands they ask you to wear, as we like to maintain our privacy and not flash to all of PV that we were staying at the Mayan Palace. We only got asked once about it and we said that it was itchy.
We were disappointed in our hotel unit at how dated the bedding and decorations were. The pillows and mattress were not that great. But the bigger crib that our kid slept in worked out fine, and they did keep the room immaculate. But we only had a little down time and just slept in the room, so we got over it.
We did NOT partake in their timeshare presentation as they only offered us 1000 pesos credit towards our stay. There is no hotel provided shuttle to their place in Nuevo Vallarta and we never bothered to venture to that area.
NEAR THE HOTEL: We really enjoyed our time by the pool and at the beach and strolling around the marina area. We walked next door to the Westin, which was nice and our kid enjoyed their playground. Meals at restaurants in PV are far cheaper than we expected (again we have spent quite a bit of time in Baja Norte and also have a timeshare in Cabo San Lucas) . There is a great Mexican (I figured it was good b/c it was always packed with locals) seafood restaurant as you walk towards dock U. It is called Coleguitas and is not expensive and they throw in quite a few shots with your meal (yes, the hubby liked it). We also ate at some of the little places near the OXXO market and they were fine. But we favored the one attached to the little coffee shop.
DOWNTOWN: We took the bus (6 pesos each adult, wild and fun ride) a couple of times downtown and got off at the Arco area. All kinds of things to eat in the area but didn't find too much interesting shopping. Though, we did buy several Mexican (like fun lucha libre characters) kids puzzles at a shop that sold wooden puzzles and the like off the malecon. Have some freshly squeezed juice drinks (fresher than Jamba Juice) at the little juice shops a couple of blocks away from the malecon. We ate at Pipi's restaurant (several blocks away from the malecon, off of Pipila Avenue). It was good, enormous portions but were disappointed to find it was packed with American tourists.
OVERALL: Despite the room, good place to relax and enjoy good weather, area, and food with your family. We would like to return to Puerto Vallarta and in another kind of room at Mayan Palace.
