This was our fourth stay at Casa Iguana "Our Little Hidden Gem of a Hotel in the Jungle" since 2003. Although still very clean, quiet, and comfortable, it is in desperate need of some TLC and updateing. It was sad to see that they are letting everything get so old and worn out! Before I explain the negative, let me share our positves: Check-in was quick, friendly, and professional. Both of the office attendants (sorry I don't remember names) could speak fairly good english and were always polite and helpfull throughout our stay. The 2 bd room guest rooms are nice size with plenty of closet space. Housekeeping did a great job! Not only did they keep our room spotless, they even went out of their way to put fresh flowers in our room every day. They also left mateing "towel" swans, and LOVE written in fresh flower pettals on our bed for Valentines day. The grounds and pool area were also keep very clean. The little store is a very nice conveniance and the attendant was always polite and friendly. For us, it is wonderfull to wake up in the beautiful jungle suroundings, listnening to the sounds of the roosters crowing, the birds singing, and soft mexican music playing from the hotels restaurant (more about it later). There are birds and butterflies everywhere. It is a very beautiful, peacfull and quiet location! The small village of Mismaloya, the Zoo, some very good restaurants ("My Tony's" is my favorite), horseback riding, Mismaloya beach, and the bus stop are all a very short walk away.
Now for the down side: The laundry, computer, and excersize rooms were no longer in working order. And, although the guest rooms, pool, and grounds are all still kept very clean and well groomed; the pool has broken tiles and cracked cement around the outside, the "hot tub" was a cold tub (even though I think they were trying to fix it the whole time we were there), the waterfall flowing from the hot tub into the pool was not flowing anymore either. The guest rooms, (mini apartments really) just need plain old updating, not just painting! Updated appliances (including a microwave), new hardware, and fresh new linens and sofa covers would do the trick. The other thing that was a big dissapointment to us was the hotels restuarant. In the past it was reasonably priced, had very good food, plus pleasant efficient service. Without being rude, sadly no longer :(
So overall: If you like budget friendly, quiet, peaceful, out of the way places, with good service. (except the restuarant) But, don't mind clean, old, and worn out accomadations, this place may be ok for you. We sure hope the new owners update. If so, we will surely be back!
