Hotel staff were wonderful. Only caution; cathedral bells ring all night long. Ask for room with A/C and leave fan on to block noise.
Early morning coffee and tea a plus.

It's true this hotel has an amazing location and all the local must-sees are within walking distance. But I feel that management was over exaggerating their amenities. We almost didn't book this hotel since there was no pool or oceanfront location to relax and enjoy the sun. But their website indicated (and still does!) that we'd be treated as guests at the Amapa Sunset Beach Club - WRONG! When we did locate the Beach Club at Los Muertos Beach we were treated quite rudely and we tried to tell them we were staying at Hotel Catedral and before we could show them our key card we were told that there is no association between Amapa Beach Club and the hotel. It was quite embarrassing. If you travel from a cold climate to Puerto Vallarta to enjoy the sun & the beach this is not the hotel for you. There are just too many to chose from!
The bathroom was also a disappointment, old fixtures, old tile a leaking toilet and only cold water at the sink.
January 2012: If you are looking for a charming place to stay and are not interested in boring chains with no personality- this place is for you. From the moment we set foot on the property, the hosts were super pleasant and helpful. The courtyard and view from this place is amazing. The room we stayed in was extremely cute, clean and had everything we needed. It is in a great part of town. Very safe, lots of shopping and so close to the main downtown area. We could hear the cathedral bell during the day- but it does not ring at night, and even if it did- it is not loud at all. No taxi or rental car is necessary if you stay here. Everything is just as you need! We arranged for a taxi to pick us up from the airport through this hotel and it was there promptly, with a friendly safe driver. Cannot recommend this place enough. Great price performer with boutique style.
The Hotel has individually designed and very well maintained rooms. Furniture and style are far from faceless chain-hotels. It is clean and comfortable. As each room is different There may be less attractive rooms than ours, however, we were more than satisfied. But the best about Hotel Catedral is the extremely friendly and helpful staff (all of them from manager to room maid).
I booked Hotel Catedral for 4 nights in PV based on the glowing reviews here, but don't know why the reviews are so good. The property was quaint and clean, but our first room was super-tiny with such a hard bed that my hips were literally bruised. Also, the hourly chiming of the nearby cathedral kept us up most of the night. The next day we asked to move to another room, and after alot of charades due to a "sudden" communication problem (front desk staff could speak English perfectly fine when we checked in), we were offered a larger room facing away from the cathedral. Only after we moved all our luggage were we informed it would cost an extra $15/night, thus making this not such an inexpensive stay any longer. The bed was still as uncomfortable and noise only marginally less. I was happy to leave this hotel.
