“Not grand but good”

What can I say about this resort? It had good points and not so good points. The good points. When we checked in (at 2:00 am thanks to Sunwing) we were the only guests that got off the bus there. That was a bonus. No line-up and check-in was fast and courteous. We had booked a garden view room and we were given a partial ocean view. The room was clean and everything worked. We were hungry so we went to the all night snack bar and had a couple of tacos before finally retiring for the night. Surprisingly we were up in the morning in time for breakfast. Maybe there's no surprise here because breakfast was on until 11:30 am. That's better than most places I've stayed. Breakfast was great as was every other meal there, although maybe a bit repetitive. The staff throughout the hotel were great and really would go out of their way to make your stay comfortable. The clientèle seemed to be more classy than the clientèle in some other places. Everyone was quiet and relaxed and this made for a nice restfully vacation. If you want to laze around the pool and are not looking to party hearty, this is a good place. The place did fill up on the weekend with a Mexican crowd and some of these people were not too quiet at all.
As for the bad points., although we got a better room than we expected it was in a bad spot. We had the kitchen downstairs and you could hear pots and pans being slammed about at 3:00 am. The maids supply room was virtually outside our door and they would be chattering in the hallway at 7:00 am. Our includedmini barr was empty when we arrived and wasn't tended tountill day three or four of our stay. There's no beach on the hotel property to speak of, although it's a short walk to some really nice beach. It seems a shame that the nicest beach is closest to the old abandoned buildings by the Costa Club. i guess that's pretty much it. I don't know if this is the place to say so, but Sunwing's flights totally sucked. On the way down we were delayed five hours with no reason given. we gave up our first evening at the resort on account of this. Our 9:00 pm arrival became a 2:00 am one. On the way back our flight was delayed 2 hours at first. No one told us. We checked out and waited for our bus to arrive. No bus. I checked the binder and sure enough, a 2 hour delay. Maybe a phone call, maybe alert the front desk. Now we have a two hour wait with no all inclusive wrist-band. We relented and took a taxi to the airport. When we checked in we found that our 2 hour delay was now a three hour delay. I find the whole flight experience totally unacceptable.

Room Tip: stay away from the 1230 series rooms.

“This place sucks...”

I have stayed at the Plaza Pelicanos several times and I will Never again subject myself to the treatment at this resort. They are liars. The front desk and the staff do not communicate so you get several different stories. And now with the sunset plaza built right in the middle, you have a huge walk to get from side to side. And don't even try to get from one side to the other by beach, the gates are locked! All the staff lied when 500 college students showed up and invaded our pool. Horrible, horrible service at this resort. Do Not stay here!

This was a lovely resort, clean, well kept, good service, fun things to do but later in the week large groups of mexican students came in & music got very loud & they were up all night whooping & hollering so it wasn't as nice in the latter part of the week.

Room Tip: no balconies but ground floor has patios

“The best service at club section”

We stayed in the club section, it was amazing. The service was perfect, the food was delicious and we had a blast! We were so sad to leave. The views of the city were gorgeous from the beach. I don't understand all the poor reviews this place has, I have been to many resorts and this place was the cleanest and has the best service!!

“Beautiful location and great staff!”

We really enjoyed our stay at the Pelicanos Grand. The staff is truly amazing -- they really make this place top-notch. The facilities and the rooms were really nice and everything was very clean. I would say it was probably a three-and-a-half star experience - very nice and modern but not luxury. There is granite-look and stone tiling throughout the room which give it a nice touch. I thought breakfast options were good (the omelet bar is the best) but lunch and dinner options were just ok. However, for an all-inclusive I thought it was definitely worth it. Drinks were decent too if you specified which type of liquor you wanted (some you have to pay extra for but generally Bacardi was no charge vs. the cheap stuff in the plastic bottles).

The Sky Lounge is one of the best features of this resort - on the top of the 8th floor, overlooking Puerto Vallarta - very cool vibe and the hot tubs are up there as well. Really a great spot for a reasonably priced getaway -and again the staff is really what makes this place excellent. Oh and the pagoda beds by the pool and ocean -- a great place to spend all day in the sun!

We had a few issues with check-in and the on-site travel agent but both cases were special circumstances, so I can't say for sure that is what one would generally experience. I never expect 100% perfection so neither of these experiences ruined our stay, because in general this place is an excellent value and the staff is truly supreme.

One last comment -- there were a number of families with small kids here. I still think it's great for a romantic getaway, but if you really don't want to be around kids maybe opt for an adults-only place. My husband and I still really enjoyed it -- there are plenty of places at this resort to enjoy quiet and relaxation, but I could see on a busy weekend it might be too much if you aren't kid-friendly.
