We stayed at Melia from Jan 10 to Jan 14, 2012, along with our nine old son.
The hotel
Airy, well-decorated lobby. You feel like walking into a luxury hotel for sure. Workers are professional and courteous, if you can ignore their frequent inquiry about your interest in time-share. The room is spacious. I particularly like the tiled floor and wall in the bath. My balcony has a side view of the beach, so do most units. No unacceptable smell, dirty bed, or anything like that as complained by some reviewers.
The beach
The part of beach Melia sits has pretty rough sands, if not stones. I scratched my foot the first day on the beach and hurt me throughout. The surface is also uneven. I would not let young kids play by themselves. On the other hand, the big rocks by the beach provides good opportunity to spot marine life. There are abundance of oyster shells and sea urchin between rocks. Crabs wander around rocks between waves. Quite interesting.
The food
We made dinner reservation at Italian (twice) and La Palapa. Italian was such a disappointment that we ended up canceling the second one. Long wait at Italian only got us over burned fish and undercooked pasta. La Palapa, on the other hand, served good dishes. And because it's by the beach, I felt the scene itself is worth some. However, after second visit, I don't think I can order anything exciting. For that, I'm glad we only stayed four nights. The buffet had reasonable choices of food, but not comparable to other all inclusives we visited else where. Again, after a couple of days, you don't long for them. Unlike other all inclusives, you have to pay for wine.
Facilities:
There's a pool that swims to the bar, apparently the most popular place for hangout. We tried kayak, too, which was very pleasant. We even spotted fish flying over the sea surface when we were away from the shore. You can also shoot bow arrows and riffle.
Location:
We rented a car, which was parked at hotel for free. Driving to downtown takes about 20 min, and it's five min away from the airport.
Overall, good place for short stay before you become bored with food and beach.
