“Good value, courteous service, limited food choice, rough beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

We stayed at Melia from Jan 10 to Jan 14, 2012, along with our nine old son.

The hotel
Airy, well-decorated lobby. You feel like walking into a luxury hotel for sure. Workers are professional and courteous, if you can ignore their frequent inquiry about your interest in time-share. The room is spacious. I particularly like the tiled floor and wall in the bath. My balcony has a side view of the beach, so do most units. No unacceptable smell, dirty bed, or anything like that as complained by some reviewers.
The beach
The part of beach Melia sits has pretty rough sands, if not stones. I scratched my foot the first day on the beach and hurt me throughout. The surface is also uneven. I would not let young kids play by themselves. On the other hand, the big rocks by the beach provides good opportunity to spot marine life. There are abundance of oyster shells and sea urchin between rocks. Crabs wander around rocks between waves. Quite interesting.
The food
We made dinner reservation at Italian (twice) and La Palapa. Italian was such a disappointment that we ended up canceling the second one. Long wait at Italian only got us over burned fish and undercooked pasta. La Palapa, on the other hand, served good dishes. And because it's by the beach, I felt the scene itself is worth some. However, after second visit, I don't think I can order anything exciting. For that, I'm glad we only stayed four nights. The buffet had reasonable choices of food, but not comparable to other all inclusives we visited else where. Again, after a couple of days, you don't long for them. Unlike other all inclusives, you have to pay for wine.
Facilities:
There's a pool that swims to the bar, apparently the most popular place for hangout. We tried kayak, too, which was very pleasant. We even spotted fish flying over the sea surface when we were away from the shore. You can also shoot bow arrows and riffle.
Location:
We rented a car, which was parked at hotel for free. Driving to downtown takes about 20 min, and it's five min away from the airport.
Overall, good place for short stay before you become bored with food and beach.

We just spent 2 weeks at the Melia January 14th - 29th and we were so pleased. The front desk staff were amazing, especially Oscar who always went out of his way to help. The restaurants were much better than I had ever anticipated and the wait staff were very professional. There was so much variety and it was obvious management wanted us to be happy. Sylvia the breakfast egg lady always had a smile on her face. The property was very well maintained and I can't say enough about the entertainment. The shows were amazing. Thanks so much for a wonderful vacation. We had a wonderful time and can't wait to go back. You will not be dissappointed if you stay at the Melia.

“Restaurant staff”

The staff at the Melia were number one.
The service at the restaurants was superb. Francisco Rivera and Gabriel were fantastic for looking after our every need. Our little grandchildren (ages 2 and 1) were a handful and these two men always smiled and tended to their wants with grace and kindness.
These two men staff always remembered what we enjoyed as drinks and were always attentive. Such a wonderful experience.

“One week wasn't long enough!!”

My husband and I spent the week of January 16th – 23rd at the Melia.
The check-in staff are very friendly and quick. Oscar at the customer service was full of information and also very friendly.
We booked a room with a King size bed but when we got to our room it had 2 double beds. They said that they would move us the next day, but when we took one look at the view from our balcony we decided to keep the room with the double beds.
The Breakfast staff was great. Sylvia at the egg station always has a smile for us when we were in line for our eggs.
The grounds crew are always cleaning the resort. It felt like we were in our own little paradise when we walked around.
We can’t say enough about the bartenders at the swim-up bar. Jaime, Manual, Cande, Abraham, and Luis were great. They were always happy to see us every time we went for a drink.
Freddy at the Vallarta Adventures was always a pleasure to talk to.
If we ever go back to Puerto Vallarta we would not hesitate to stay at the Melia.
The service at this resort was outstanding and we tipped everyone from the staff at the front counter to the grounds staff.
Congratulations to the management on the amazing staff they have at the Melia.

Room Tip: Higher floors have the best views.

“wish we were back”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

We were a group of 8 friends and family. We had rooms 1802, 1806, 1105 and 1412. All the rooms were very nice and clean. Only complaint was that we arrived at 11:00 am and couldnt get in a room until 3:00. Then our room 1802 was still not ready until 4:00. But we spent the day relaxing in the pool so it wasn't a problem and the view from the room was worth waiting for. The beds are actually comfortable, real beds not a mattress thrown on a cement slab like most Mexico hotel beds.

This actually was our second visit to the Melia, we were there 6 years ago. I have to agree with other reviewers that the place has declined some, it might be because there are less people staying there. I dont know if it is the economy or what.

6 years ago you had to wake up a dawn to reserve lounge chairs, now you can find a place on the beach, pool or overlooking the beach at anytime throughout the day, even for a group of 8. That definately is an improvement! Rosie the waitress was incredible bringing us our drinks (PLEASE TIP THE WAIT STAFF they deserve it!) The beverages were great and they had a new drink special everyday. For those who care they even had the top shelf brands.

The pool is very warm, that is unusual, most pools in Mexico are freezing in January because they dont heat them. But they aren't running all the fountains in the pool anymore, it don't know if that is a cost saving measure or if they aren't functioning. 6 years ago they were beautiful.

The grounds are very lush and green. You feel like you are in the jungle. Around the ponds look for the huge Iguanas! You can buy food and feed the fish and ducks.

The activies staff did a great job. Some of the evening shows were kind of corney but the dancing and acrobatics were subperb!

Now the food....the food quality has declined some, but it was still good. My favorite was the sushi at La Palapa for lunch. Whayt I found sad was there was only buffet open for breakfast, the Quetzal by the lobby. 6 years ago the La Palapa was open for breakfast too, so you could have breakfast by the ocean. Again they probally dont have the occupancy to have both open. We ate at the Italian and the Seafood (the La Palapa in the evening) both were good but the Italian was better. We never found time to do the Mexican but there were a couple Mexican theme nights for buffet anyway.

We did a fishing trip and an ATV / zipline trip. Didnt catch any fish but it was nice to get out on the ocean. Some in our group saw several whales. The ATV/Zipline was incredible. We booked it from Raul on the beach, much much much cheaper than through the hotel or tour group.

The one thing is one of us left a number of items in her room. We emailed the hotel once we returned and we are waiting for a response to see if it is possible to have the items returned. It is probally too late, but it would be nice to get a response.

All in all it was a wonderful trip, incredible weather, great rooms, great service, beautiful hotel...we will definately be back, it is not the hotel's fault that items got left behind.
