“Just plain awful”

I have never written a review before on a hotel, but because this experience was so awful, I feel compelled to let others know! I have stayed in Mexico at various all inclusive resorts many many times and feel I have several good comparisons with which to judge this hotel. It started with check-in when the rooms weren't ready. This is fine as we were early in the day, but they kept telling us that the rooms would be ready in 10 minutes so we would wait. After about 9 or 10 times of telling us 10 minutes more, it was now hours later and we were still in the lobby waiting. They should've just said it would be several hours and we could've just enjoyed the time by the pool waiting. I got a "standard room" vs an upgrade to an oceanview. Normally a "standard" room just means that it doesn't have a beautiful view, hot tub or other fancy features. In this case, a "standard" room meant that there was mold all over the room and that there is no hot shower--only luke warm! I had to pay more to get a room with no mold and a hot shower (in the new tower). Food-the buffet was exactly the same night after night and had very little choices and pretty crappy food! I went hungry most of the time except for a few minimal choices of fruit and some bread! This is seriously th worst food I have ever encountered at a mexican resort!!!! Bars-there was ONE bar (by the pool) that was part of the all inclusive! There were other bars on the propertry that were either not manned or were not part of the all inclusive! This is ridiculous! Pools-there was no swim up bar and the pools were all chopped up into several smaller pools. They were clean, however. Fitness Center-most of the equipment was broken, there was no air conditioning or fans and no towels. Construction-near one of the main pools there was major construction going on next door so it was not a pleasant day by the pool and also distrurbed anyone whose room was in that part of the complex as the hammer banging started eary in the morning. I will say that although this hotel is very old and run down, they did try their best to keep it clean. Also the staff was friendly. But i paid as much for this hotel as I have for a 5 star and it was night and day in the experience! i definitely will NEVER spend this kind of money again without it being a 5 start resort! Please do yourself a favor and explore other options.

Room Tip: You will have to pay more, but stay in the newer rooms in the tower.

“Wonderful visit”

I don't understand all the negative comments on here about this place. We just returned after spending five days there and we had a wonderful time. The staff was exceedingly friendly, the food was good, the pools were clean, the grounds manicured and, for a hotel, the prices for food were reasonable. We did not get the all inclusive and I would recommend the European plan so that you can eat in many other places to sample the delicious food. Our room was not modern, but it was clean and the bed comfortable. There was construction, but were never bothered by it. We don't go to resorts to spend time in the room, so we were up and gone during the day swimming, lounging on the beach, or doing other activities. Its convenient to the bus route to get downtown, so don't take a taxi. The bus was only 6.5 pesos each way. I think the person who incurred $700 in fees at checkout must have paid for the European plan and thought they were on the all inclusive plan and charged everything to their room. We had NO fees at checkout and paid cash for our drinks at the bar and the two meals we had at the poolside restaurant. Both meals were very good, though more expensive than they would have been in town.
Regarding the vendors, you will be bothered by them no matter what beach you go to, so that comment can be disregarded. Also, music was NOT loud. I think one has to read negative comments for anything with a little skepticism. Some people can never be pleased and many of their issues are of their own making. When you go on vacation, you need to be a little flexible and understanding. The person who was screaming at the front desk clerk obviously has no concept of how to deal with other cultures. Everyone we met there bent over backwards to make our stay pleasant and I would go back again.

Room Tip: If you have the money, splurge for a villa.

The Krystal has a wonderful staff. We had so much fun with them. That's what's great about Mexico is the people! The resort was nice. Just wish we had a refrigerator in our room. The beach is beautiful. I've been to Puerta Vallarta 3 times now and The Krystal has the best beach! Staff and beach! We had a great time!

“Just Awful”

My family and I stayed here for a week over Christmas using our timeshare through RCI. We travel usually twice a year to Mexico and we have never been so disappointed as this time. As soon as we approached the property in our taxi, we couldn't help but notice multiple millitary men standing outside the entrance to the hotel with machine guns. After asking the front desk multiple times if this was hotel security, I got the run around. A few days into the trip, I found out that the millitary rents a few of the units and the soldiers occupy them during the night. Upon check in, we received two hotel keys to two different units. We were instructed to pick the unit which we liked more. At this point, I knew we had a problem as not many hotels are this eager to let you chose between multiple rooms. Both rooms were just awful and run down. Actually, the entire hotel is this run down. We picked the bigger room and were disappointed. It was run down, dirty, the living room area and outside of the door was invested with ants, and the bathrooms smelled like sewer. We called several times about the smell coming from the bathroom and housekeeping would stop in and spray a horrible smelling air freshner and leave. The food is disgusting, especially the buffet. We luckily didn't do the all inclusive, but after eating out the first night, we quickly decided that it would be the first and last time we did that. I highly recommend going downtown to grab a bite to eat. The service was just as awful as the food. We waited forever for our food, including our check. The servers were rude as well. All in all, this was by far the worst trip we have ever taken to Mexico. I strongly caution anyone who is attempting to come here. You will be disappointed for the money they charge you to stay here!

“Only OK”

The property was OK, nothing great. Our room was clean, but the beds were uncomfortable. The service was terrible. I have never been to a resort in Mexico where I had to ask 3x and wait 30mins for 1 drink. Booze was just ok. The food was crappy. I ate omelets for breakfast and the rest of the meals we ate out. Don't do all-inclusive if you have a choice, way too many great restaurants to choose from in town.
